Dear

University Club Friends, As many of you are aware, in recent years the Club has experienced a decline in membership, participation in Club social activities, and scholarship awards. For the 2007-2008 Club year the membership was 164, and $44,000 was awarded in college scholarships to Mamaroneck High School students. Last year, membership was 67, and $22,100 was awarded in scholarships. Several reasons have been cited for this decline, including: The recession, which has caused a reduction in charitable giving. Change in the target memberships life-style more two-earner households and less time and interest in participating in the Clubs social activities. Uncertainty about whether the Clubs mission should be social or fundraising for scholarships. Changes to the traditional structure of the Club, such as the admission of women and the replacement of the Snowflake Ball by the Snowflake Cocktail Party. Ironically, these changes were attempts to increase membership.

Whatever the reasons, it has become apparent to the Governors that the Club is no longer succeeding either in sponsoring attractive social activities or in raising money for scholarships. The Governors have considered several proposals for the rejuvenation of the Club. However, any of the proposals would require a tremendous amount of time and energy, which few Governors and members are able to supply given the demands of careers and families. Even if such time and energy were expended, the Governors see little realistic chance of making the Club compelling again to prospective members in the current environment. The Club, now ending its 75th year, has been an important fixture of the community; however, its time now has passed. Therefore, after consulting with many former Governors and friends of the Club, the Governors have reluctantly concluded that the Club should cease operations and be dissolved as of December 31, 2011, the Clubs fiscal year end. Money remaining in the Clubs bank account, currently about $5,000, will be given to the Mamaroneck-Larchmont Student Aid Fund, which, like the Club, grants scholarships to deserving Mamaroneck High School students. The Governors and I thank you for your past support of the Club. If you wish to continue helping Mamaroneck High School students attend college, we urge you to support the Student Aid Fund. Sincerely, Bradford Brooker President, Board of Governors
