SMART Business Solutions Workshop

ouncil President Tony Young hosted a SMART Business Solutions workshop showcasing how to do business with Walmart. Local business and community leaders attended the event, which was held at the Tubman-Chavez Multicultural Center. The meeting provided valuable information on how to work with Walmart covering topics from how to become a contractor to how to become a national supplier as well as details about the companys future growth in the San Diego region.

Black Contractors Association 29th Anniversary Gala


As part of its commitment to support apprenticeship and minority contractors in the construction industry, Walmart partnered with the Black Contractors Association (BCA) to host the organizations 29th Anniversary Gala. The Gala was a fundraiser to support YouthBuild USA and to celebrate the BCAs past and present accomplishments. YouthBuild is a community development program providing job training, education and leadership development opportunities to unemployed and out-of-school young adults. To this end, we support nonprofit organizations that support the education and implementation of environmental conservation in our communities, schools and governments, and we conduct outreach to inform our customers about the many products we sell that promote a sustainable lifestyle.

California Center for Sustainable Energy
The Walmart Foundation California State Giving Council recently awarded a $50,000 grant to support CCSEs Green Learning Adventure program. Green Learning Adventure is an in-classroom enrichment program geared primarily toward students in grades five through eight. The program features hands-on, interactive lesson modules focused on global climate change and sustainable living, teaching students how to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and implement other sustainable practices.

u Develop charitable partnerships in San Diego worth $8 million

Grants
Summer Giving Program: Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provided $1.77 million to help fill gaps created in San Diego when schools close for the summer. The funding is part of a $25 million nationwide initiative to expand nutrition, learning and employment services for elementary, middle and high school students throughout the summer months. Grants were provided to San Diego Unified School District, THINK Together and the San Diego Park and Recreation Department. The summer giving grants will assist in two key areas: P roviding 162,100 healthy meals and snacks to San Diego area school-age children and a total of 8 million healthy meals to more than 85,000 youth nationwide. H elping 1,000 local children enroll in summer learning programs and helping 20,000 youth nationwide participate in programs that will better prepare them to return to school.

Senior Community Centers: Walmart recently provided a $15,000 grant to the Senior Community Centers to fund two of the important programs it provides for seniors. The grant will support the Transitional Housing Program, which provides temporary housing, health care services and daily meals to seniors in need. The contribution will also fund a Diabetes Education Program, which allows the Senior Community Centers to staff a diabetes expert to educate seniors about the disease and provide them with diabetes testing strips and glucometers. Putting support into action, 16 Walmart store managers volunteered to serve lunch to senior citizens gathered at the Center.

Red Cross Hug-A-Hero: Walmart provided a $35,000 grant to the American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter to support its Hug-A-Hero doll program. The program provides children of deployed military servicemembers with a doll that features a head-to-toe photograph of the recipients parent or loved one and a personalized message just for them. The Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter recognized Walmart for its contribution to this significant program at a recent event held at the residence of Rear Admiral and Mrs. William French.

Casa Familiar: Walmart was recognized at Casa Familiars Abrazo dinner for its recent $50,000 grant to help support the organizations educational and job training services. Specifically, this donation will allow Casa Familiar to expand its employment programs with a technology curriculum including hands-on computer courses. The grant will also support continuation of job placement skills including resume building and interviewing.

Walmart Foundation California State Giving Council: The State Giving Council recently announced $100,000 in grants to San Diego nonprofit organizations and programs, including the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE), Reality Changers and After-School All-Stars San Diego. These grants will help the organizations achieve their missions in the critical areas of sustainability and education. CCSE was provided $50,000 to continue its Green Learning Adventure program, aimed at educating elementary school children about the importance of living a greener life. Reality Changers, San Diegos leading organization for providing college scholarships to disadvantaged youth, received a $25,000 grant to support its mission of providing innercity youth with the resources they need to become first generation college students. After-School All-Stars San Diego was awarded a grant for $25,000 to help provide San Diego students with out-of-school programs to keep them safe and help them be more successful in school and in life.

Portable Pools: Walmart provided funds to ensure the Linda Vista Portable Pool program could go on this year despite budget cuts. Funds will provide the Linda Vista Recreation Center with a portable pool, as well as the ability to conduct free swim lessons for children.

Fiesta del Sol: Walmart sponsored the 6th Annual Fiesta del Sol, one of San Diegos largest Latino family, music and cultural festivals. Walmart associates staffed a booth in the Health & Wellness Pavilion, where they talked with event attendees about Walmarts affordable prescription drug plans and vision program. Booth visitors received a free reusable bag for carrying their festival goods.
