History Vocab
Historiography- the study of how historians change over time ie: in the 1920s the
interpretation of slavery was different than the 1960s Its important because 1) There are multiple interpretations of everything, you need to know how up-todate your sources are.

Industrialization- The process of moving from an agricultural to a mechanical. Picked up


in the US after the civil war. Work and Home were separated- which lead to womyns rights movements Wages-People began to be paid Weapons- Firearms became more accurate and effective Urbanization- People moved from farms to cities Monopolies began to rise

Capitalism- Economic power is held by the people. Laissez faire is fully capitalistic.
Adam Smith was the founder of capitalism. He was from Scotland. It influence the origin of the United States.

Communism- The Government runs the economy. Eventually the government would
disappear.

Neocolonialism- Indirect control of one country over another. Neolib Globalization- The Unification of global economics, people and technology. Increased
transportation and telecommunication are both examples. It can be government or non governmental. Anti-Trade and Anti-Immigration are both against globalization.

Urbanization- The movement away from farms to cities. It usually goes hand and hand
with industrial revolutions. People cannot compete with machines and so they are forced out of the home and into the workplace. The American Industrial Revolution is one example another is China in the last decade.

Imperialism- Expanding a countrys influence to another area by military or diplomatic


force. The ME is an example of current imperialism as is our presence in East Asia. Our withdrawal from the ME isnt imperialist, Our choice not to invade Iran is not imperialist.

Socialism- The stage between communism and capitalism. It focuses on distributing


corporate wealth to the public to increase private property equality. Almost all countries known as communist are actually socialist. Capitalist countries like America and Japan are not.

Assimilation- When one culture becomes absorbed into another. This can be seen after a
war or imperialism. The disappearance of Native American culture or any immigrational culture is one example. The change of Okinawa Japan is another. Black Pride Movements are not an example.

Social Darwinism- the belief that some people are meant to live and we should let the
others die. This is a form of eugenics. The holocaust could be an example of some sorts as would the privatization governmental agencies. Welfare is not an example.

Monopoly- is the having sole control over a certain market. Examples include Bell
telephone company and sometimes big corporations like Walmart and McDonalds. 1 of 25 Mexican restaurants is not an example.

Protectorate-One State protected by another state (usually larger in size and economic
power) Two examples are Israel and Taiwan which are both protected by the US. China is not an example.
