DIGITAL EQUALIZER
VISION: INDIA WHERE ALL CHILDREN HAVE
ACCESS TO RESOURCES AND INFORMATION
THAT PREPARES THEM FOR PARTICIPATION IN
THE DIGITAL AGE

MISSION: TO ADVANCE THE USE OF

TECHNOLOGY TO ENGAGE, EDUCATE, ENRICH
AND EMPOWER INDIA’S UNDERPRIVILEGED
CHILDREN.
Iron
INTRODUCTION
Iron, symbol Fe, magnetic, malleable, silvery white
metallic element. The atomic number of iron is 26; iron is
one of the transition elements of the periodic table (see
Periodic Law).

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
COMMON IRON ORES

• HEMATITE,MOST ABUNDANT
IRON ORE Fe2O3
• GOETHITE
• SIDERITE
• TECONITE
• MAGNETITE Fe3O

Hematite

Hematite, mineral and the most abundant ore of iron,

composed of ferric oxide, Fe2O3. It is widely distributed
over the world, occurring in rocks of all ages.

Goethite
Goethite, common ore of iron, and one of the most
commonly occurring minerals in nature. An iron hydroxide
mineral, FeO (OH), goethite generally contains about 63
percent iron.

Siderite
Siderite, also chalybite, brown, translucent or
transparent mineral with a glassy luster, composed
essentially of iron carbonate, FeCO3.
Taconite
Taconite, hard, flint like sedimentary rock of chemical
origin, rich in particles of the red iron oxide, hematite, and
the black iron oxide, magnetite.

Magnetite
Magnetite, mineral and common ore of iron having the
composition Fe3O4.
Red Cliffs, Hamersley Range
The red cliffs of Australia’s Hamersley Range are a
sign of the mountains’ rich iron deposits.

Drilling holes to a depth of about 15 meters that are then

carefully loaded with explosives
Ore is unloaded in one of the 3 Loading Pockets and which
is then fed into automatic trains

Removing silica from the ore.

Extracting iron from iron ore using a Blast
Furnace
Introduction
The common ores of iron are both iron oxides, and these
can be reduced to iron by heating them with carbon in the
form of coke. Coke is produced by heating coal in the
absence of air.
Coke is cheap and provides both the reducing
agent for the reaction and also the heat source.
