1.3.1: Trophic Levels The trophic level of an organism is its position in a food chain. Trophic levels are related to the number of times that energy is transferred.

All food chains start with the sun. The suns energy is initially transferred to the grass. This means that the energy transfer has happened once (from sun to grass). Therefore, the grass is on trophic level 1. 1. How many times has the energy been transferred to the deer?

______________________________________________________________ 2. What trophic level is the deer on?

______________________________________________________________ 3. How many times has the energy been transferred to the wolf?

______________________________________________________________ 4. What trophic level is the wolf on?

5. Which organism would be the producer?

______________________________________________________________ 6. Which organisms would be the consumers?

______________________________________________________________ Remember, food chains work in a linear fashion One thing eats something and is then eaten by something else. The first organism to consume something is known as the PRIMARY CONSUMER. The second organism to eat something is known as the SECONDARY CONSUMER. 7. On the food chain above, which organism would be the primary consumer?

______________________________________________________________ 8. On the food chain above, which organism would be the secondary consumer

______________________________________________________________ 9. On the food chain above, which organisms would be herbivores, omnivores or carnivores?

Activity: Trophic Cards Working in pairs, cut out the cards.

Person A has set A and person B has set B.

Person A deals one of their cards.

Using the diagram as a guide, person B deals 2 cards and has to match the correct trophic level and organism type to person As card.
