1. a) Consider a coaxial cable with inner radius a and outer radius b. Derive the

expression for D for the region a< r < b using Gauss Law. b)A point charge of 6nC is located at origin in free space, find potential of point P if P is located at (2, 0.4, 0.4) and (i) V= 0 at infinite , (ii) V= 0 at (1,0,0) and (iii) V=20V at (-0.5,1,1) 2. a) Derive poissons and Laplace equations from fundamentals. b) Explain the behavior of conductors in an electric field. 3. a) Derive the expression for energy density in a static electric field. b) A parallel plate capacitor with air as dielectric has a plate area of 36 cm2 and a separation between the plates of 1mm. It is charged to 100V by connecting it across a battery. If the battery is disconnected and plate separation is increased to 2mm, calculate the change in (i) p.d across the plate and (ii) energy stored. 4. a) State and explain Oesterds experiment. b) Find the field intensity at a point on the axis, 5m from the centre of a circular coil of area 120 cm2 and carrying a current of 40A.

5. a)Using Amperes circuital law, find H due to infinite sheet of current. b) Find the magnetic field of current in a straight circular cylindrical conductor of radius a (express the magnetic field as a vector in terms of the current density J) 6. a) Derive force between two straight, long and parallel current carrying conductors in a magnetic field. b) In an infinite filament carrying 14uz Amps lies on the Z-axis and a straight solid conductor segment extends from PA (2,-2,0) to PB (2,2,0) carrying 3uy Amps. Find the torque on the conductor segment about an origin at PO (2, 0, 0) as a function of L?

7. Obtain an expression for magnetic vector potential in the region surrounding an infinitely long straight filamentary current I. 8. a) A coaxial cable is carrying a current of 15A at 150V. Find the value of power carried by the cable using Poynting Theorem. b) Derive the Maxwells equations for harmonically time varying fields.

Find B assuming long length of conductor. 8. a) Derive modified amperes circuital law for time varying fields. b) In a given lossy dielectric medium, conduction current density Jc= 0.02 sin 109t A/m2. Now if core has a circular cross section of 140mm diameter and total flux in core is 15m wb, then find (i) force developed on the conductor (ii) power required to move conductor at a speed of 50m/sec in a plane at right angles to the field. 7.
