PPE Program - Butadiene Market Dynamics

The markets for butadiene and synthetic rubber have emerged from a long period of oversupply, leading to record prices and margins in 2006. Butadiene prices broke the $1,500 per ton level in Asia in late 2006, almost six times the lowest prices seen in the late 1990s. At the same time, margins for West European producers reached over $400 per ton, despite the prevailing high feedstock prices. The current high global operating rates are set to last through 2007 and 2008, before dropping off due to major capacity additions. The Asian market has been particularly active for butadiene due to the ongoing development of automotive and tyre production in the region which drives demand, and the major steam cracker developments which drive supply. The Asia Pacific region has accounted for over half of global capacity and demand growth over the past five years, and will account for three quarters over 2007-2011. Major steam cracker developments in Asia will provide more mixed C4s for butadiene production, leading to a decrease in operating rates. In the long term, the growth of ethylene production, and therefore the availability of C4s, will exceed demand growth for butadiene, leading to increased reprocessing of steam cracker C4s. Countries such as China are expected to extract enough butadiene to serve their own derivative requirements, and hydrogenate then recycle the remainder back to the steam cracker. The latest butadiene and derivatives report published by ChemSystems in December 2006 investigates the market and growth profile of butadiene and all major derivatives, and details the expected plant developments. The report finds that the operating rates will remain above 85% until 2009, when major capacity additions and slower demand growth will cause a decline towards a trough in 2011. Global butadiene growth has averaged 3.3 percent per year from 1995-2006, but is expected to average only 3.1 percent over 2006-2015. Global consumption of butadiene is expected to increase from 10 million tons in 2006 to 13 million tons by 2015. New capacity developments are focussed on conventional extraction from steam cracker mixed C4 streams. The current high margins on butane dehydrogenation are expected to be temporary and not likely to encourage new investment in this technology. The tendency towards heavier cracker slates in the Middle East is increasing the availability of steam cracker C4s for butadiene and derivatives. The scale however remains small relative to expansions in Asia . While currently growing rapidly from a small base, the Middle East is unlikely to build a major export position for butadiene and derivatives as it has in the ethylene chain.

Butadiene Consumption to Grow below GDP

Global butadiene demand growth will be below GDP growth due to the maturity of the major markets in developed regions. Demand will remain highly cyclical as a result of the high level of exposure to the automotive sector. Global GDP Growth vs. Butadiene Consumption Growth

Butadiene is primarily consumed in the production of synthetic rubber, which is in turn mainly consumed in the production of tyres and other items for the automotive industry. The rapidly developing automotive manufacturing industry in Asia, particularly China, is one of the major drivers affecting butadiene globally. The market for butadiene rubber is growing faster than that of SBR, in many cases gradually substituting for SBR, but also growing through its use in high-impact polystyrene (HIPS). ABS is the highest volume engineering polymer, with diverse applications in sectors such as automotive components and household appliances. SB Latex is used mainly as carpet backing and as a coating on colour printed paper. Butadiene is also consumed in the production of hexamethylene diamine (HMDA) via adiponitrile, an intermediate in the production of nylon 6,6. Major cracker investments in China are expected to provide sufficient mixed C4s to supply the growing demand for the production of butadiene and synthetic rubbers, allowing China to offset its major import requirement for synthetic rubber. The long term excess C4 availability is expected to promote the usage of BR, which is 100 percent butadiene, at the cost of competing products. BR usage can be increased in tyre formulations, substituting for emulsion SBR and natural rubber. Demand in Asia Pacific accounts for 41 percent of the global total, and the proportion is forecast to increase. The growth in demand in Asia is driven by increasing availability, and the rapid growth in demand in derivatives to supply the booming Asian manufacturing sector. The markets in North America and Western Europe are large but growing at sub-GDP rates as a result of the mature automotive and manufacturing industries there. Global Butadiene Demand, 2006

Global Capacity Development

Butadiene extraction capacity is concentrated in the major naphtha-cracking regions of Asia Pacific, North America and Western Europe. The development of ethylene capacity based on heavier feedstocks in the Middle East will increase butadiene capacity there, although the region is destined to remain small in terms of overall production. Capacity in Eastern Europe is expected to remain fairly flat as ethylene capacity in the region remains in excess of demand, and is not expected to increase significantly. Global Butadiene Capacity

Supply, Demand and Trade

Global butadiene operating rates remain at well above average levels, but are expected to decline towards a trough in 2011 as major capacity additions are made during the forecast period of low demand growth. The increasing proportion of liquids based cracker developments will increase the availability of mixed C 4 feedstock for butadiene extraction at a rate greater than that of butadiene demand growth. This is expected to result in a greater proportion of mixed C 4 hydrogenation and co-cracking rather than over-expansion of butadiene extraction capacity. The limited amount of naphtha cracker capacity expansion in North America and Western Europe will govern the level of butadiene capacity development in these areas. No new derivatives will be based in areas where there is no additional butadiene availability, leading to a gradual concentration of activity in butadiene and derivatives in Asia. Link to this page According to the petrochemical consulting firm Chemical Market Associates, in its recently completed 2005 World Butadiene Analysis, the global butadiene markets are undergoing a period of significant change. Historical trade patterns and pricing relationships are shifting and geographic areas that historically have not been significant players in the butadiene market are beginning to play key roles. The region with the fastest demand growth for butadiene is Northeast Asia, says CMA. Currently, the most significant butadiene consuming regions of the world are North America, west Europe and northeast Asia with 27%, 22% and 36% of global demand, respectively. However, in 2009, North America, West Europe and northeast Asia will account for 24%, 20% and 39% of global demand, respectively. The rapid growth of tire and rubber goods production in northeast Asia, particularly China, both for domestic consumption and export, is causing rapid growth in demand for synthetic rubber, and its primary feedstock butadiene. Historically, the Middle East has not been a major player in the global butadiene market. However, CMA forecasts that the Middle East will go from representing about 12% of global exports in 2004 to nearly 25% of global exports in 2009. As a result, the Middle East will become the world's largest butadiene exporting region in the world, the study says. In addition, South America and Southeast Asia will see significant growth in butadiene consumption, and India will become a significant global player in both butadiene and synthetic rubber. The location of existing and future butadiene extraction capacity will be critical to meet demand growth in synthetic rubber (polybutadiene and styrene-butadiene), nylon (via adiponitrile), and ABS (acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene) markets. In North America, butadiene extraction capacity is expected to operate below maximum rates, constrained by the limitations of affordable feedstock and local demand. In Northeast Asia, expansion of existing butadiene extraction capacity beyond what has currently been announced is needed to maintain reasonable extraction operating rates and secure the supply chain of the rapidly expanding butadiene derivative markets. In west Europe, butadiene extraction units will be required to run at high rates to supply slowly growing domestic demand and take advantage of highnetback export sales where possible.

Butadiene has been trading at over $750 per ton in the U.S. and Europe, and over $1,100 per ton in Asia, the highest level in two decades. Expectations for lower underlying energy prices and additional production capacity in Iran, India, China and Taiwan will contribute to easing butadiene prices over the next two years. However, lack of any firm commitments to construct additional butadiene extraction capacity will cause butadiene prices and margins to rise sharply again by 2007-2009, CMA says.

Butadiene Market In Americas To 2020 - Recovery In End Use Markets Providing Positive Demand Growth In The Region
Butadiene Market Is Expected to Grow at a Healthy Rate of 2.7% During Period of 2009 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Free-Press-Release.com) March 10, 2011 The American demand for butadiene decreased from 2.79 million tons in 2000 to 2.01 million tons in 2009. The demand fell with a CAGR of 3.2% during the period on account of global recession which affected the Americas more than any other region across the globe. Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) and polybutadiene manufacturing industries were the major consumers of butadiene. In 2009, the combined share of both the industries was more than 55% of the demand for butadiene in the Americas. Some of the major markets for butadiene have reached a saturation point which has limited the demand for butadiene in those regions. Countries such as the US have reached the saturation level. The demand for butadiene is rising from other developing countries such as Brazil. In the forecast period from 2009-2020, the demand is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.7%. Brazil and Canada are expected to be the growth engines for butadiene demand in their regions, although due to smaller sizes their impact would be marginal on the total demand of their respective regions. Updated to mid-May 2011

Asian market review by Helen Yan, ICIS pricing

Asia butadiene (BD) spot prices soared by more than $1,000/tonne from February to over $3,400/tonne CFR (cost & freight) NE Asia (northeast Asia) in early May. The month-on-month unabated price increases were driven primarily by limited supply. More than 10,000 tonnes of BD from Asia were exported to the US in May, hindering spot availability in Asia. The tight market conditions were further aggravated by an unexpectedly prolonged outage at Shells 800,000 tonne/year mixed feed cracker in Singapore. Its 155,000 tonne/year BD unit, at the same site, was also shut down from 18 March, because of operational problems. The two-month outage at Shells cracker and BD unit exerted upward pressure on BD prices. Traders and end-users, scrambling to secure spot cargoes, had to pay more than $3,400/tonne CFR NE Asia in May in order to secure any spot product.

European market review by Nel Weddle, ICIS pricing

The European BD market, in the period from mid-February to mid-May, was characterised by extremely tight supply and strong demand, which saw both contract and spot prices soar to record highs. Supply was constrained by planned and unplanned cracker shutdowns as well as a shift to lighter feed slate, both of which limited the production of the crude C4 feedstock. Unexpected outages at BD extraction units in Germany, alongside a scheduled turnaround at a Dutch unit, exacerbated to the situation. The March monthly contract price settled at a record-high 1,555/tonne FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe), up by 115/tonne. Another sizeable gain was seen in Aprils price, with a rise of 135/tonne to 1,690/tonne. Demand from the US, which was still plagued by production issues, remained extremely strong and this pushed spot prices ever higher. In early March, export prices were pegged at around $2,3002,300/tonne FOB (free on board) NWE, but quickly rose to as much as $4,000/tonne by early May. The May monthly contract price settled at 2,050/tonne FD NWE, a massive 21% rise of 360/tonne from April.

US market review by Gene Lockard, ICIS pricing

During the second quarter of 2011, the US BD market continued to strengthen, with the settlement splitting between $1.41/lb ($3,108/tonne) and $1.45/lb in May, compared with a split settlement of $1.21/lb and $1.23/lb in April. Spot prices in the first half of May reached as high as $1.85-2.00/lb. Demand throughout this period was strong, while supply was tight amid a lack of crude butylenes (C4) and production outages. The split settlement in May was the sixth in the past nine months. Market participants said that split settlements have seemingly replaced the old settlement method, in which the four nominating producers agreed to the lowest nomination. While the rise seen in April and May was thought to be unsustainable, buyers and sellers alike agreed that there was little to suggest that the market would cool off during the US summer months.

Butadiene Uses and Market Data

Search for Butadiene Suppliers

Butadiene is a versatile raw material used in the production of a wide variety of synthetic rubbers and

polymer resins as well as a few chemical intermediates.

The largest single use for butadiene is in the production ofstyrene butadiene rubber (SBR), which is principally used in the manufacture of automobile tyres. SBR is also used in adhesives, sealants, coatings and rubber articles such as shoe soles.

Butadiene can be polymerised to polybutadiene rubber (BR). The main outlet for BR is tyre products but is also used as an impact modifier of polymers such as high impact polystyrene (HIPS).

Butadiene is one of the components used in the manufacture of acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene (ABS), which is the largest-volume engineering thermoplastic resin. A growing outlet for ABS is the electronics industry where it is used in business machines, computers, radios, televisions and telephone handsets while an important market is the automobile industry.

Other polymers made from butadiene include styrene-butadiene (SB) copolymer latex, which is used in paper coatings, carpet back coatings, foam mattresses and adhesives. Styrene-butadiene block copolymers have many applications ranging from asphalt modifiers in road and roofing construction to adhesives, footwear and toys.

Nitrile rubbers, made by the copolymerisation of acrylonitrile with butadiene, are used mainly in the manufacture of hoses, gasket seals and fuel lines for the automobile industry as well as in gloves and footwear.

Chemical intermediates manufactured from butadiene include adiponitrile and chloroprene. Adiponitrile is used to make nylon fibres and polymers. Chloroprene is the monomer to make polychloroprene, better known as Neoprene, which has a wide variety of uses such as wet suits, electrical insulation, car fan belts, gaskets, hoses, corrosion-resistant coatings and adhesives.

Butadiene is also used in the commercial production of butanediol and tetrahydrofuran. Butanediol is the feedstock for a number of speciality polymer resins such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). Tetrahydrofuran finds some uses as a solvent but it mainly provides the feedstock for the production of spandex fibres.

With synthetic rubber being the dominant outlet that will affect butadiene demand, the dynamics of the tyre and automobile industries have a major impact on butadiene markets. Demand for tyres in the new vehicle market has been hit as automobile production became severely impacted by the global economic downturn.

Over the longer term, US-based consultant SRI estimates that the average growth in butadiene demand will be 2.7%/year to 2013.

Northeast Asia is the largest butadiene consuming region in the world. It is also the fastest growing region in absolute terms and on a percentage basis with most of the growth in China.

North America is the second largest butadiene consuming region with the majority of consumption in theUS but also significant demand in Mexico. However, North America is expected to have the slowest growth of the major regions.

West Europe is a slightly smaller butadiene consuming region than North America. Slow to flat growth reflecting GDP rates is likely over the next five years.

European BD output reached just over 1m tonnes in the first half of 2010, compared with 817,000 tonnes in the first half of 2009, according to the Association of Petrochemicals Producers in Europe.

According to ICB, Asia and the US will remain big importers. The US's import need is tipped to grow from about 210,000 tonnes in 2010 to about 300,000 tonnes in 2014.

Europe is expected to have reduced availability of BD because of growing domestic demand and potentially reduced cracker operating rates as a result of the large ethylene volumes expected from theMiddle East, ICB states.

The butadiene markets will continue to shift to Asia where the majority of the new butadiene production and consumption plants will be located. However, the higher growth in demand expected for the region will leave it a net importer.

More than 95% of butadiene is produced from crude C4s (CC4s) which are co-produced with ethylene from steam crackers. However, the availability of CC4s has become a concern with the CC4 market balance tightening globally. Global supply is expected to be enough to meet demand but regional differences may continue.

Availability of CC4s in North America has been an issue for some time. This is likely to continue as ethylene production is expected to be flat in North America. There is also a trend to lighter feedstocks for ethylene plants, reducing the proportion of CC4s produced. Availability of imports from traditional markets such as Canada and Turkey may also decline.

Availability of CC4s in northeast Asia has not been a significant issue but this may change in the future. Asian ethylene producers may shift a portion of their feedstocks away from naphtha to propane and butane reducing CC4 production. CC4 producers have also found alternative uses, primarily for propylene production using metathesis processes.

West Europe has had a surplus of CC4 supplies with some of the material hydrogenated for the motor fuel market or recycled back to the ethylene plant. It is also being used as a feedstock for an isononyl alcohol process and consumed in butene-1 and octene-1 production. In the future, the surplus of CC4s in West Europe is expected to be small.

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) Uses and Market Data

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) is the largest-volume engineering thermoplastic resin. Traditionally, it has been positioned between commodity plastics, such as polystyrene (PS) andpolypropylene (PP), and the higher-performing engineering thermoplastics, for example polycarbonate and polyurethane. However, ABS has been losing its price premium to the commodity plastics and competing with other plastics, displacing high impact PS and PP in a number of applications.

Due to its flexibility of composition and structure, ABS can exhibit a wide range of properties, allowing its use in diverse applications. ABS resins are composed of over 50% styrene and varying amounts of butadiene andacrylonitrile. Styrene provides rigidity and ease of processing, acrylonitrile offers chemical resistance and heat stability, and butadiene gives toughness and impact strength.

A growing outlet for ABS is the electronics industry where it is used in business machines, computers, radios, televisions and telephone handsets. An important market is the automobile sector where it is used in instrument panels, consoles, radiator grills, headlight housings and interior trim parts with growing use in recreational vehicles.

Other applications include domestic appliances such as refrigerators and sewing machines; pipes, fittings and other products used in the construction industry; and recreational goods such as boats and mobile homes.

ABS can be made into a wide variety of grades tailored for particular end uses. The polymers tensile strength and stiffness can be improved by using reinforcing agents and fillers such as glass fibre and minerals. Although ABS grades are usually opaque, transparent grades can be made by including methyl methacrylate as a monomer. The addition of alpha-methyl styrene can improve the heat resistance of ABS.

ABS alloys and blends with other polymers permit tailoring properties and costs. ABS/polycarbonateoffers heat resistance with low-temperature impact strength and finds applications in automotive instrument panels and wheel covers, and safety and leisure products. ABS/polyvinyl chloride has good impact strength, toughness and flame retardancy, which is useful in electrical components, machine housings and appliances.

Most markets for ABS are mature, but it continues to find new applications. The market has evolved into a general purpose sector, for which cost and productivity are the most important factors, and an engineering plastics sector, which is generating most of the industrys growth. It is in the latter sector where producers are trying to differentiate themselves.

Global demand for ABS is estimated by industry observers to grow at around 10-15% in 2010. CMAI predicts global ABS demand will increase by 6%/year through 2014.

A number of projects are under consideration in China. Projects include a 400,000 tonne/year plant being constructed by Tianjin Dagu Chemicals in Tianjin. It plans to start up a 200,000 tonne/year ABS unit during 2010 in the first phrase of a 400,000 tonne/year project.

In addition, Shanghai Huayi is planning a $73m 200,000 tonne/year ABS project in Shanghai ChemicalIndustry Park, Shanghai, China with start up expected at the end 2010.

Updated to mid-August 2011

Asian market review by Clive Ong, ICIS pricing

The price of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) was at $2,320/tonne CFR (cost & freight) China in the second half of May, but subsequently tumbled to $2,060/tonne CFR China in late June on sluggish demand in the key Chinese markets.

Ample stocks along the supply chain also saw many traders and distributors liquidate their cargoes because of poor demand. The market saw a better demand-supply balance from mid-July because of severe rate cuts by regional producers and traders liquidating inventories.

Prices recovered to around $2,270/tonne CFR China in early August. However, the uptrend was shortlived as the sell-off in commodities and the fall in energy prices after the downgrade of the US credit rating, weighed down ABS prices to $2,250/tonne CFR China in mid-August.

China market review, ICIS pricing

Domestic acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) prices fell to a yearly low on 8 June, at around yuan (CNY) 15,900-16,400/tonne, down by CNY1,600/tonne compared with mid-May, largely because of high market inventories and weak downstream demand, according to traders.

Domestic electric bicycle producers ran at low rates because many lead-acid battery producers in Chinashut down production after the Deqing lead poisoning cases that erupted in May, resulting in weak demand for ABS. Domestic ABS producers reported limited profits and some even suffered from losses as a result of the falling prices and rising costs. At the end of June, these producers cut production, leading to a slowdown in the price falls. On 30 June, ABS prices were assessed at CNY15,850-16,700/tonne.

In July, major domestic ABS producers pushed their ex-works (EXW) prices up by CNY8001,000/tonne in response to tight spot supply and high feedstock prices, and distributors followed suit. ABS prices stood at CNY17,350-18,000/tonne on 30 July, a rise of CNY1,300-1,500/tonne compared with late June.

In August, ABS players and downstream users were panicking because of plummeting values for crude oil and SM, resulting in fewer transactions, as well as limited offers and bids. Prices were assessed at CNY17,100-17,700/tonne, down by CNY250-300/tonne from the end of July.

European market review by Amandeep Parmar, ICIS pricing

Volatile feedstock markets meant that European acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) prices fluctuated dramatically over the past three months.

ABS prices spiked by 80/tonne in May, largely because of a 360/tonne hike in upstream butadiene values.

June saw ABS numbers roll over as feedstock price movements counteracted each other. Styrene and acrylonitrile (ACN) fell by 75/tonne and 5055/tonne respectively, balancing out the 270/tonne butadiene spike.

July saw ABS prices fall by 55/tonne. Butadiene continued to firm by 180/tonne, but was outweighed by the 9099/tonne and 95/tonne falls in styrene and ACN, respectively.

August ABS values jumped by 50/tonne to 2,1152,615/tonne FD (free delivered) NWE (northwest Europe) for compounding grade, based largely on a 121129/tonne styrene increase.

However, the increases that producers secured over the quarter were less than they targeted because of cheaper Asian imports amid weak demand in China.

Prices from Asia rose from 1,700/tonne FD NWE in May to 1,900/tonne FD in August.

Demand is generally flat as several market participants are on their summer holiday. The only exception is the downstream automotive sector in Germany, which continues to enjoy healthy business.

US market review by Michelle Klump, ICIS pricing

In the period from mid-May to mid-August, US acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) prices saw larger swings along with feedstock costs.

For much of May and June, the market continued to feel the effects of plant outages relating to flooding along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Prices trended up during this period, following higher feedstock prices and tighter supply. Weaker demand and pricing in Asia led to more imports.

Demand remained lighter in most markets, including in the key construction sector. The automotive sector continued to show strength.

Buyers began to call for some reductions in July prices on the basis of reduced values for acrylonitrile and styrene monomer (SM). Prices trended down in July.

Heading into August, the market began to show signs of a slowdown as demand through September appeared below projections. One producer said it would be reducing operating rates because of low demand and the higher cost of feedstocks.
