Note: This editorial was deemed credible enough to become the official position of the newspaper it was published in. It is a tremendous honor as an author and journalist whenever one writes an editorial opinion and it is then deemed important enough to be the papers official position. I am truly grateful. - Kal Korff Pakistans Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar has warned the United States that it will lose a valuable ally in the so-called war against terrorism if it continues to accuse Pakistan of duplicity and culpability in terrorist attacks. Khar was pushing back very hard against blunt remarks made by US Joint Chief of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, who made the direct allegation that Pakistans Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agency was colluding with the Haqqani Network. US-Pakistan relations reached rock bottom in the immediate aftermath of the killing of Osama bin Laden. For months, CIA personnel carefully tracked the worlds most wanted man, and in Israeli Kidon Unit-style, unilaterally flew in and executed him, leaving Pakistan to clean up the mess. You will lose an ally, Khar told members of the media this past Friday. You cannot afford to alienate Pakistan, you cannot afford to alienate the Pakistani people.

While Khar is technically correct, as is typical with diplomats, reality is not so simple. Pakistan is hardly an ally when it takes billions of dollars in aid, skims off its usual cut of 50% and misuses it to line the pockets of its corrupt officials. Dating back to CIA Station Chief Cofer Blacks days during the Reagan administration, American officials have always known that 50% of all money shipped to Pakistan is never used for its professed intentions. Pakistan is hardly an ally when one minute it is officially condemning terrorism, while at the same time arranging for the murder of American and coalition forces. If this is the definition of an ally one hardly needs an enemy. The truth is that America and Pakistan do need each other. It is in Pakistans best interests to eliminate its fundamentalist militants, and it is the USAs interests to do everything it can to help Pakistan do that. 1.0v1 Sep 25, 2011 Kal K.
