Introduction-

1.1

Background of Action Research:

Meaning of Research:
Research is a long-term scientific search, in which a problem is selected first. It is, then, defined and delimited looking at its importance. Then, scientifically a hypothesis is formed. After collection of facts, their classification, their conclusion is derived and solution is produced. Research is an honest, exhaustive, intelligent searching for facts and their meanings or implications with reference to a given problem. Product and findings of a given piece of research should be an authentic, verifiable contribution to knowledge in the field studied.

Educational Research:
Educational research is said to be that search which occurs in educational situations and which provides a scientific direction to the development of behavior. In other words, the objective of educational research is to form the systems of pupils abilities and their development. Educational research is that activity which is directed towards the development of a science of behavior in educational situation which is to provide knowledge that will permit educator to achieve his goals by the most effective methods.

Types of Research:
In the field of education, two types of researches occur-

a. Fundamental Research b. Applied Research

In Fundamental Research, the basic elements of education are discovered, but in Applied or Action Research, the day-to-day problems of educational process are solved.

S.No Fundamental Research

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Fundamental research is traditional. It has a wider area of problem. It needs special training, for implementation. Standard devices are used. Fundamental researcher needs no relationship with the school. Its objective is to indoctrinate the principles. Results achieved are general. In it, extreme truth is discovered through results which expand the sphere of knowledge.

Action Research
It is developed from fundamental research. So it is a new concept. It has narrow problematic area. Action Research can be conducted by a teacher, manager and educational officer without any special training. Self made devices are used. Action research is conducted by teachers, managers. Its objective is to improve school working by finding a practical solution. Generalization is not necessary. This improves the activities and working system of the school.

Meaning of Action Research:

Action Research means such a scientific search which is concerned with the principle aspects of education.

In other words, action research means practical aspect of educational research. In this, principles are not indoctrinated, but efforts are made to solve the practical difficulties, scientifically which changes the working system and the desired objectives are achieved.

Definition of Action Research:

Following definitions will make the meaning of Action Research more clearProcess by which practitioners attempt to study their problems scientifically in order to guide corrects and evaluates their decisions and actions in what a number of people have called action research. Action Research is organized, investigative activity aimed towards the study and constructive change of a given endeavour by individuals or group concerned with such change and improvement.

Importance of Action Research:

Action Research is useful in many ways, as Can raise the achievement level of pupils. Can remove the discrepancies among pupils and teachers which occur due to social process and causes. Can solve the problem of delinquency and backwardness.

Can preserve the democratic values by eliminating traditional and mechanical environment. With the help of Action Research, decisions can be taken regarding the day-to-day problems which occur before the principles, supervisors, administrators and mangers.

So, Action Research inspires all the teacher, managers, supervisors and administrators to work together with co-operation. This solves the most difficult educational problems very easily.

1.2 Background of the problem:While teaching in the St. Joseph Inter College and while taking classes of standard 7th A1 during practice teaching it was observed that students were not able to understand the functioning of digestive system of human body in biology. While asking questions they were not able to answer correctly. When pupil teacher asked about the structure and function of difficult organs in human body the students were quite confused.

1.3 Need and importance of the problem:The problem felt by the pupil teacher in students of class 7th is lack of understanding the functioning of digestive system of human body. The problem is to be solved as early as possible as to create the hold of students on the subject matter. This will enhance the command on the subject matter.

2.

Statement of Aim:-

To study and solve the problem of students of class VII of St. Joseph Inter College, of non understanding of the functioning of digestive system and glands of human digestive system in the subject of biology.

3.

Objectives of the study:-

To identify the reason for non clarity of concept. To develop the motivation among the students.

To make them realize the uses of the subject in practical life. To make them realize the importance and function involved in the process of digestion in the body. To create interest in the students with regards to biology that they learn to appreciate it and take active interest in the subject. To raise their level of self reliance by building up their Knowledge in the subject.

4.

Probable causes of the problem:-

There is no well equipped laboratory for demonstrating. No good library facility for self study. No charts explaining diagrams are in the class regarding functioning of different organs. Students do not take interest in completing home work. Biology concepts are not taught with the help of relevant examples.

5.

Action Hypothesis:-

1. If the pupil teacher uses relevant models of the human digestive system, students

will be able to develop interest in the subject. 2. If pupil teacher prepares slides (PowerPoint presentation) depicting functioning of the various organs like stomach, intestine and uses them, it will help the students in clarifying their concept. 3. If pupil teacher explains the digestive system diagrammatically on the black board in a proper sequence, students will be able to grasp and understand the subject matter clearly.
4. If pupil teacher will call the students at the blackboard for labeling the diagram of

the digestive system, students will feel motivated.

6. Tools for collection of data-

1. Pre test 2. Post test 3. Observation
