1. Measurable Objectives:
1. The students will analyze a Request for Reconsideration of Huckleberry Finn. 2. The students will write a response letter to Sam Clemens. 3. The students will discuss in groups the banning of books and the banning of Huckleberry Finn.

3. Anticipatory Set: (motivation)


1. Show students American Library Association Video on YouTube 2. Have students discuss reasons why books are banned 3. Go over reasons and make a class list 4. Show statistics from ALA on challenges by reason and by initiator

Materials: copy of lesson plan, classroom copies of: example from Brooklyn Public Library, hypothetical Request for Reconsideration form, hypothetical Request excerpts, and scenario worksheet Technology: Overhead projector Procedures: 1. Anticipatory Set 2. Pass out materials for activity 3. Go over directions 4. Student work time on response letters 5. Ask students to read some of their responses to the class.

5. Modeling
Modeling will be done through the example from the Brooklyn Public Library, which was found on the New York Times website at: http://documents.nytimes.com/how-brooklyn-public-library-has-responded-to-book-challenges

6. Comprehension Check:
The teacher will be able to check for comprehension when the students read their letters. Comprehension is mastered if the letter backed up the student's argument as to why the book should remain or be taken out of the library.

Teacher will ask students to read some of their responses to the Request for Reconsideration of Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn."

including students from different ethnic and racial groups, students with IEPs, ESL students, and students with different learning styles.) If there are any visually impaired students who cannot see the Powerpoint, individuals slides will be given to them. Students with IEPS will be accommodated according to their IEP plan. ESL students will be allowed to use any translation device, if needed. All students will be allowed to access the academic resource room if needed during the activity and extra time will be allotted for all students needing an accommodation.
