CONCURRENCE WITH STONY RIVER TOWNSHIP RESOLUTION ON METALLIC SULFIDE MINING

Whereas, by changing the area from a lake district to a mining district there would be irreversible damage to existing jobs and revenue sources, such as recreation and tourism, forestry, wildlife and fisheries, and related small businesses, and to property values and the attraction and retention of residents, Whereas, nowhere in the world has metallic sulfide mining been done without irrevocable damage to the environment Whereas, there is no convincing objective evidence that metallic sulfide mining for copper, nickel, and other non-ferrous [non-iron) metals can be done in Minnesota, without impairing the water quality of lakes, rivers and groundwater, thereby impacting aquatic species, ecological systems and human communities, including the loss of clean drinking water, Whereas, metallic sulfide mines require perpetual treatment of water after a mine's closure, and is not possible to accurately predict long term clean-up and closure costs,

it

Whereas, the headwaters of the Lake Superior watershed and the rivers, lakes and wetlands of the northeastern Minnesota, including the Boundary Waters Wilderness, should not be subjected to Acid Mine Drainage and the leaching of heavy metals such as lead, zinc, copper and mercury into water systems, Whereas, Minnesota cannot afford to be the recipient of untested mining practices nor should taxpayers be encumbered with insurmountable clean-up costs, Whereas, for these and other reasons, I do not support or endorse metallic minerals exploration or metallic sulfide mine development in Stony River Township,

Resolution as passed on September 14,2077: The Stony RiVer Township Board 1) supports the

enactment of a Minnesota metallic sulfide mining moratorium law, and 2) requests of State and Federal authorities that, in the interim, they deny all requests for permits to prospect for metallic minerals or develop metallic sulfide mines in Stony River Township,
