APPSURD

INTRODUCTION The last few years have seen a remarkable development in the Android industry. Android is a Linux-based operating system for phones and other mobile devices (tablets, e-readers, media players, etc). As the mobile phones of today are replacing the magnificence what computers used to have some years before, the popularity of android applications is increasing day by day. So, its time to think as innovative and weird as you can. Bring down your coding skills to develop an android application of your own. Cash prizes worth INR 18,000 to be won

CATEGORIES Welcome to the Android Application Development Competition organized by Techfest. You can participate in this by developing a cool android application. Your application can be private as well as public (i.e paid or free) when you release it in android market. Note that your app can be used for phone as well as tablets, so you can optimize your app for both the platforms. Note: For all phone applications, they should be compatible i.e. they shuold run on Samsung Google Nexus S mobile phone. Your app should lie in one of the following categories: 1. Education: Exam preparations, study-aids, vocabulary, educational games, language learning, etc. 2. Games: Puzzle/Arcade/Action/Animation/Others 3. Communications: Messaging, Chat/IM, Dialers, Address books, Browsers, Call management, etc. 4. Health: o Health and Fitness: Personal fitness, Workout tracking, Diet and nutritional tips, Health & safety etc. o Medical: Drug & clinical references, calculators, Handbooks for health-care providers, Medical journals & news etc. 5. Multimedia:

Media and Video: Subscription movie services, remote controls, media/video players o Music and Audio: Music services, radios, music players o Photography: Cameras, Photo editing tools, Photo management and sharing 6. News and Weather: Newspapers, News aggregators, Magazines, Blogging, Weather, Weather reports, etc.

Note: In front of each category are the examples of widely used applications in those fields. Participants need not choose any application from the examples. These are just an aid to know the type of applications in market today. TIMELINE All partcipants have to submit their apps and an abstract by this date. 18 shortisted apps (3 from each category) from this stage will go further in the competition. The apps and abstracts will be judged by our jury and the shortlisted apps (3 from each category) will be declared on our website by 10th November. The shortlisted teams can start on improving their apps till 30th November. Shortlisted teams have to submit their apps after improvement by 30th November, 2011. All the shortlisted apps will be launched by Techfest in the Android market. Techfest will keep all the apps free for one month so its better for the teams to submit a free trial version of the app for one month, though it is not necessary. All the apps will be removed from Android market. Number of downloads, rating and comments will be taken for each of the app. Final presentation along with a demonstration of the app will be conducted during Techfest.

STRUCTURE

Abstract Format The following points must be included and clearly highlighted in the abstract: 1. Category of the app from one of the six mentioned earlier. 2. Description of the idea and the way of implementation. 3. Technical aspect of the proposed solution. o Memory requirements of the app. o Efficiency measurements as done by the team on some standard data. o User friendliness of the app. 4. Any other relevant or solution specific information.

Abstract Submission The abstract should be mailed to appsurd[at]techfest[dot]org with the subject "Code Magnate: Appsurd Abstract Reg. No. xxxx " (For ex. Code Magnate: Appsurd Abstract 1243) before 23:59 hrs on 1st November, 2011. Do not forget to mention your registration number in the abstract while sending it. Launch of android apps in the market by Techfest Techfest will launch all the selected apps in Android market. The apps will all be kept free for downloading. If the owner wants them to be paid, he can have free trial version of his app for one month and after one month when Techfest withdraws the apps from the market, he himself can launch the paid version. Techfest will withdraw all the apps from the market by 30th December, 2011. The number of downloads, rating and comments of each app will be taken into consideration while judging. The exact details are given in the Judging tab. Its upon the discretion of the owner to relaunch the app in the market. This time, the owner

has to launch the app on his own. Techfest will not involve in these issues. Owners may decide to keep it free or paid.

Final Presentation during Techfest i.e. 6th-8th January, 2012 The selected teams have to give a presentation and demonstration of their app in front of the jury. The apps should be same as the ones launched in the android market.

RULES General Rules 1. Every team has to register online on our website for the competition. A registration number will be allocated to the team on registration which shall be used for future references. 2. A team can register at any point of time before 1st November, 2011. They have to submit the abstract and app before 1st November, 2011. 3. The decision of judges shall be treated as final and binding on all. 4. Note that at any point of time the latest information will be that which is on the site. The information provided in the pdf downloaded earlier may not be the latest. However, registered participants will be informed through mail about any changes on the site. Eligibility Any student having a valid identity card of his college, can be from India or from Other Countries. Certificate Policy Best team from each category will be given the Certificate of Excellence. 18 shortlisted teams will be given the Certificate of Participation. Team Specifications The participating entries must be in a team of a maximum of 3 [three] people. If the participating team feels that their idea requires more participants, they can forward their request, with suitable reasons, to appsurd[at]techfest[dot]org with the subject "Appsurd team number increase".

JUDGING

Appsurd will be judged by a panel of experts. For the initial shortlisting of best 18 apps, following are the broad guidelines for judging: 1. Memory of the phone or tablet used by the application 2. Efficiency in terms of speed 3. User friendliness 4. Idea development and implementation For the final judging, the procedure is as follows : 10% weightage to number of downloads of the app in android market. 5% weightage to averaged rating of the app on a scale from 1 to 5. 5% weightage to subjective judging of comments from Android market by the users of the app. 80% weightage to the judging on the basis of final presentation and demonstration.
