-------J&K s top LeT man shot dead in Sopore Mir Ehsan Sep 14 2011 Srinagar : Top Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Abdullah Ooni, one of the Valleys most w anted militants with a bounty of Rs 20 lakh on his head, was killed in an encoun ter in Sopore today, police said. Ooni, 27, was the face of the Lashkar in Kashmir, and had been instrumental in g alvanising cadres of the militant organisation in Sopore town. He was an IED exp ert, officials said, and a master of disguise who had escaped the police dragnet at least a dozen times over the past few years. Ooni was killed after the police received specific information that he was hiding in the Batpora Baghat locality, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, S M Sahai, said. The killing, Sahai said, is the second major setback suffered by th e Lashkar following the killing of its five commanders in Lolab earlier. Ooni, who belonged to Mansehra in Pakistan, crossed into the Valley at the time of the 2005 earthquake, and last year married a Sopore girl called Tabassum. A f ew months ago, she delivered a baby girl at a government hospital in Srinagar. T abassum identified her husbands body soon after he was killed today, police said. We got the body identified by his wife. The body also matched pictures of Ooni th at police and other security agencies had, said a senior officer who was part of the operation. Police said they had received a tip-off that Ooni had come to meet his wife in S opores Batapora Baghat locality last night. He was killed by police and Army assa ult teams inside an abandoned house nearby after an encounter this afternoon, th ey said. Sopore superintendent of police Imtiyaz Hussain Mir told The Indian Express that his men had been keeping a close tab on Oonis movements for a month now. We launc hed eight operations to nab or kill him over the last week. Todays operation was the ninth one, Mir said. We would generally conduct late-night operations or try to encircle him at the cr ack of dawn. This time, we knew that he had come to meet his wife and was there for the night, but we changed our strategy and cordoned off the house only at 9 am.

Ooni jumped out of a window and took refuge in an abandoned house nearby. We foll owed. He threw a grenade and then opened fire, Mir said. Ooni, the police said, was finally killed at 1 pm. He was alone, Mir said. I have r eceived splinter injuries on my face, but all our men are safe. The polices initial information that Ooni, the Lashkars North Kashmir chief, would be accompanied by two other top Lashkar commanders, Muzaffar alias Molvi and Ak ash Bader, turned out to be incorrect. A pistol was found on Ooni. After entering Kashmir in the Kupwara sector, Ooni initially operated in the Lol ab Valley. In 2008, following instructions of his senior commanders, he moved to Sopore. He kept shifting bases between Sopore town, Zanigeer and Kupwara. Police investigations linked Ooni to the recent assassination of Jamiat Ahle Had ees chief Molvi Showkat. He was also involved in the booby-trap attack on Sopore police station in July, in which a policeman was killed and nine others were in jured. Police said he was also involved in the killing of the teenage sisters Ak thara and Arifa in February this year. Despite heavy police deployment, protests broke out in Sopore town after the enc ounter. Till the Lashkar-e-Toiba commander, 27, was killed on Tuesday, stories about his origins and movements have remained a mixture of contradictions. What was known about him, however, made him vital to the Lashkar and his capture or killing key to security forces operations. His mastery at escape was matched by a daredevilry that helped revive militancy in Sopore. On a January morning last year, Ooni and three others hurled a grenade at the So pore police station and then, rather than flee, waited in a narrow lane across t he street. An hour later, they returned, hurled more grenades and fired at the S Ps personal guards. The SP was inside but the militants killed a policeman and a civilian besides injuring four cops. The attack was a turning point for Sopore. In 2008, police had declared it a free from militancy area, and one of the legends around Ooni is that this was why he had been sent to Sopore. After the attack, a stunned government carved out a spe cial police district, separating Sopore from Baramulla. Several more attacks wou ld follow; daytime encounters would become frequent. Security forces came close to getting him six times, with each escape adding to his reputation. Unlike other top Lashkar commanders, he avoided the jungles and bodyguards. Having mastered the art of disguise, he preferred congested neighbou rhoods in Sopore town and adjoining villages sometimes roaming around on a motor

cycle, sometimes taking a lift from a Sumo driver. He had set up a vibrant netwo rk of Lashkar cells across north Kashmir. Police records show Ooni was from Pakistans Punjab province in Pakistan. Some rep orts say his real name is Azhar Malik. Others say he belonged to a Malayali fami ly in Karachi. Ooni trained as a commando at Lashkars Mansera camp and was sent to Kashmir in 20 05, around the time of the earthquake. At Lolab in north Kashmir, he worked unde r divisional commander Hafiz Nasir. In 2008, Nasir was killed with other top lea ders, leading to a collapse of the north Kashmir network; even OGWs, local overg round workers who act as the outfits eyes and ears, had surrendered or been arres ted. This was when the police declared Sopore militancy-free, leading to the Las hkar sending Ooni there. After the attack on Sopore police station, Ooni and his men attacked the officia l residence of the then Superintendent of Police, Sopore Altaf Khan, that same y ear. This put the police under pressure but Ooni escaped every trap laid for him . One of his many escapes was on November 1, 2009. The Army had killed his aide Zu bair and left, not knowing that Ooni was trapped under the debris of a house at Sopores Chinkipora. Locals pulled him out alive. A month earlier, he had escaped after a 16-hour standoff that saw police kill Lashkar commander Abu Mayia from P akistan. In 2010, he escaped three times in the space of three weeks. On January 30, poli ce and the Army cordoned off New Colony neighbourhood but he slipped through. On February 23, forces laid a cordon that trapped eight militants, but six of them including Ooni escaped after a two-day encounter. Days earlier, he had broken t hrough a cordon at a village, after a brief gunfight with soldiers. It was love that eventually proved his undoing. He married a Sopore girl last ye ar; the police knew it and kept a watch on the neighbourhood. The 24- year- old Libyan informer codenamed Nomidia passed on secret details to the alliance that fatally weakened the Gaddafi regime. To evade capture she moved around constantly, used multiple mobile SIM cards and hid her activities from all but the closest members of her family. But she was never suspected because Gaddafis security forces didn t think it poss ible that a woman could spy on them. The woman, an engineer, said: I was not on the radar. Telephone lines were monitored, mobile phone text messaging was blocked, and the Internet was available only to government offices and a group of foreign journa lists who were kept under guard in a five- star hotel. The citys prisons were full of people suspected of aiding anti- Gaddafi rebels or even just of passing information to someone outside Libya. And after seeing Gadaffis brutal repression of the rebellion, tall, slender Nomid ia said she felt compelled to act. I could not help it when I saw what Gaddafi did in Benghazi first, in Misrata, i n Zawiyah, in Tripoli, the Western Mountains, she said. She began by calling Libya al- Ahrar, an anti- Gaddafi television station based in Doha, Qatar. With little real information leaking out of Tripoli, producers at the station pu t her voice on air under the name Nomidia with accounts of what was happening in the city. Soon she was dialling in with details of military forces which the channel wante d to keep off the air to avoid alerting Gaddafis government. Instead they began passing on the information to NATO, via officials with the re bel government, the National Transitional Council. A producer at the station, who was Nomidias main point of contact, said the infor mation Nomidia supplied was basically, where they were storing their arms, their tanks. She did an amazing job. That was pretty brave. I know a lot of guys who w ouldnt do it in Tripoli at the time. So Im very proud of her, he said. Sep 14 2011 New Delhi : The Jamia Millia Islamia has decided to file a case against a guest lecturer at the Centre for Management Studies (CMS) for alleged derogatory remar ks during a lecture last Friday. Students have complained that the lecturer said a burqa did not suit a management student. The university said the remarks were communal. Jamia Registrar S M Sajid said the guest lecturer had made some derogatory remarks about students wearing hijab. Th e students submitted an application to the Dean, demanding action against the le cturer. A student present in the class room told Newsline: The lecturer asked a question and my classmate could not answer. He then began commenting on the attire of gir ls and said a burqa did not suit a management student. The Jamia administration has decided to terminate all future association with the lecturer. This is his first visit to Afghanistan since he took over on August 1. Mathai, sources said, was safe and was carrying out his scheduled meetings with t op government functionaries in Kabul. He is accompanied by senior officials and is expected to return to Delhi on Thursday. Sources refused to divulge details of his visit, including his itinerary, citing security concerns. Senior Iranian and Russian officials attended celebrations Monday for the offici al launch of the 1000-megawatt Bushehr plant in southern Iran. It began to generate between 350 to 400 megawatts of electricity, equal to 35 to 40 percent of the reactors full capacity. The Russian-built plant was connected to the national power grid for a test run Sept. 4, generating 60 megawatts.

The bathroom use by some passengers aroused the suspicion Sunday, but all were r eleased after being questioned by authorities on the ground. On an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles, three passengers who made repea ted trips to the bathroom were cleared after the plane safely landed at New York s Kennedy Airport. Readers posted their reaction to the half-page advertisement in The Threat Matr ix, a blog of the Long War Journal, which is a publication focused on providing reporting and analysis on the global war on terror. "This is quite humorous. They could do a hell of a lot for world peace by destro ying their plethora of militant groups. Does any other nation have such an infla ted sense of self worth (sic)," reads one of the over a dozen comments posted on the blog. The two, Shane M. Bauer and Joshua F. Fattal, both 29, were sentenced to eight y ears in jail last month on the charges, which they deny. The Americans have alre ady spent two years in a Tehran prison after being arrested near the border with Iraqi Kurdistan in July 2009. An attorney for the Americans was quoted by The Associated Press as saying they would be freed after the payment of $500,000 bail each. A third hiker, Sarah E. Shourd, was released on $500,000 bail in September 2010, and returned to the United States. Mr. Ahmadinejad spoke of the plan to release them in an interview to be aired on Tuesday morning. No further details were immediately available. The Jamia Millia Islamia has decided to file a case against a guest lecturer at the Centre for Management Studies (CMS) for alleged derogatory remarks during a lecture last Friday. Students have complained that the lecturer said a burqa did not suit a management student. The university said the remarks were communal. Jamia Registrar S M Sajid said the guest lecturer had made some derogatory remarks about students wearing hijab. Th

e students submitted an application to the Dean, demanding action against the le cturer. A student present in the class room told Newsline: The lecturer asked a question and my classmate could not answer. He then began commenting on the attire of gir ls and said a burqa did not suit a management student. The Jamia administration has decided to terminate all future association with the lecturer. Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung could not be reached for comments.
