System Requirements

Macs are not supported.


You must use a PC for
Voice.

Voice will not work with


FireFox or any browser
other than IE

Additionally:

• All popup blockers must be turned off. This includes popup blockers
included in toolbars such as the Google toolbar, Yahoo toolbar, etc.

• The first time you enter voice, you may have to install a plug-in called
ActiveX. This will only take about 30 seconds and will not harm your
computer.
Start by Testing Your Hardware

1. Open the Control Panel on your computer
2. Select Sounds and Audio Devices Properties (or the equivalent on your
system).
3. Make sure your microphone is plugged in and selected in the “Voice
recording” area – also make sure the speakers you will be using are
selected in the “Voice playback” area. Click on “Test hardware” to test
your microphone.
4. Follow the instructions in the pop-up window – “Sound Hardware Test
Wizard”. Make sure the green bar moves up and down as you speak.

Registering for a Voice Username and Password
• The voice login window appears
after you click “Click here to go
to Evoice Café.”

• Your first time, you will need to


register to get a specific
username and password used
only for voice.

• Click “Register” and a “member


registration” window will open.

• Fill this out with a valid e-mail


address, and your voice-only
username and password will be
mailed to you – usually within a
day or two.

• Keep this unique username and


password for voice in a safe
place; you will need it each time
you want to enter the voice
environment.
Logging Into Voice

• Your voice username will be a


5 digit number, like the one
shown here.

• Your voice password will be a


7 digit number.

• Enter them in the appropriate


boxes and click enter to gain
access to the meeting rooms.
The Meeting Rooms

Voice has three meeting rooms


available 24/7.

They are:
1. The “Main Meeting Room”
(circled here) where voice
meetings are held.

2. A “General Chat” room


where members can hang out
and chat by voice.

3. “Meeting Room 2” for


smaller gatherings and some
special meetings.

Setting Up Your Microphone in Voice

The “Communication Control”

panel will open up.
Make sure:
• “Set Mic” is checked.

Now That I’m Set-Up, How Do I Talk?

3 To use your microphone or headset to speak in voice,


simply click the “Talk” button (1) in the lower left once
2 to take the microphone. You can now speak.
You will know you are talking and that people can hear
you 3 ways:
1. Little orange bars will vibrate on the “Talk” button.
2. The text screen will identify you as talking.
3. A microphone will appear next to your name and
icon.
When you are done talking, press the “Talk” button
once again, and you will relinquish the mic to the next
person who wants to speak.
Alternately, you can press and hold down the F9 key
to speak. When you release the F9 key you will release
the mic so others can speak.
1 Only one person at a time speaks in voice – which
makes following the discussion very easy.
Using the “Advance” Key

2 Send a member a private text message

Special Functions:
• “Talk Req.” – put yourself on the list to be the next to speak
• “Icons” – change the icon that you have (the default is Garfield)
• “VPM” – initiate a voice private message with another member – you do not have to use the “Talk” or
F9 key to speak in this two way conversation.

Final Thoughts
• Don’t be intimidated by the technology or the
environment: Voice functions just like chat with
speakers - if you don’t want to talk.
• Come to your first meeting a few minutes early;
the host will help you get set up.
• Use a headset unless you are using a webcam with
a built in microphone. If you wish to use a
webcam and it has a built in mic, use that for best
quality.

Initiating Text Private Messages

Sparky initiates a Text Private Message with BVD


1. Sparky selects (highlights) BVD from the member list
2. Sparky checks the PM button
3. Sparky types the text which only BVD will now see in the Text Bar
To exit private messaging and return to speaking with the main room,
click “[All]” above the member names and uncheck the PM button.

BVD initiates a Voice Private Message with Sparky
1. BVD selects (highlights) Sparky from the member list
2. BVD clicks the VPM button in the Advance Menu
3. BVD and Sparky are now talking one on one to each other; no other members
can hear the conversation. Two talking smiley icons indicate these two
members are in a private voice chat.
You do not need to hold the F9 key or press the “Talk” button in VPM. Talk
is initiated automatically.
