The

American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is as unique and special as the stories that motivate our dedicated walkers, donors and volunteers. Since 1993, nearly 7 million walkers across the country have raised more than $400 million through Making Strides events to help ght breast cancer. Last year alone, more than $18.3 million was raised in New York and New Jerseyhelping to create a world with more pink for your green. Making Strides is creating more pink with your green by funding groundbreaking breast cancer research, by providing free lodging for breast cancer patients when treatment is far from home, by giving free rides to patients needing a lift to treatment, by being there for patients during and after a cancer diagnosis, and by ghting for funding to pay for mammogram screenings. More pink means 2.5 million breast cancer survivors will celebrate another birthday this year. Help create More Pink this October at a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk right on Long Island (Jones Beach State Park, Sunday, Oct 16 and Dowling College, Sunday, October 2). Patient navigation also occurs in American Cancer Society Hope Lodge locations, including at the facility in Manhattan. However, patient navigation isnt limited to physical locations. One-on-one patient navigation can also happen anytime, day or night, via the American Cancer Societys tollfree hotline, 1-800-227-2345. Rudd participates in the American Cancer Societys Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Long Island walk at Jones Beach State Park because she knows the funds raised through that event support programs like patient navigation. Shell be walking this year on Sunday, October 16th. To learn more about how you can get involved with Making Strides, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or log onto cancer.org/stridesonline.

diagnosis can present many questions: How will I get to treatment? What will happen if I lose my hair? Will my health insurance cover my treatment? Who can I talk with about what Im going through?

Thats where the American Cancer Societys Patient Navigation program comes in. Patient navigation is a process by which survivors, caregivers and health systems are connected to facilitate access to needed services and measurably improve the quality of life of survivors. The process of patient navigation links newly diagnosed patients with the services of the American Cancer Society and its community partners. Patient navigators often are cancer survivors themselves who bring a unique perspective to their roles. Karin Rudd of St. James faced a breast cancer diagnosis at the same time as her husband was dealing with melanoma, a battle he would ultimately lose. During her cancer experience, Karin struggled with many of the issues other survivors deal with, but she did so on her own. I was not aware of the many resources that are available for cancer survivors, Rudd said. Other than my immediate family, I went through my cancer alone with no support. Now Rudd, a busy mother of two boys and a student at Suffolk County Community College, volunteers as a patient navigator at Stony Brook University Medical Center and at North Shore Hematology Oncology. Patient navigation often takes place in a health care setting, a hospital or doctors ofce, where trained staff or volunteer patient navigators are present. As a patient navigator, I want to give people what I didnt have, I want to put people at ease, Rudd said. It makes me feel good knowing that I was able to help.
