Allows the Multi-Trak sequencer to be 'synced' to MIDI-equipped drum machines. Disabled on power-up 031202 DISABLE MIDI CLOCK INPUT - Turn Speed knob away from the stop. Enables the Multi-Trak's internal clock to control the record and playback speed of the recorder. 031203 TO CHANGE THE BASIC MIDI CHANNEL - Hold MIDI Channel and turn Parameter Value until the desired channel (1 - 6) appears in the Value / Program display. MIDI data is sent over the selected channel. If in Mode 3 or Mode 4, this also determines the channel through which MIDI data is accepted. 031204 TO DISPLAY THE CURRENT BASIC MIDI CHANNEL - Hold MIDI Channel. Set to channel 3 at the factory. 031205 TO DISPLAY THE CURRENT MIDI MODE - Hold MIDI Mode. 031206 TO CHANGE THE CURRENT MIDI MODE - Hold MIDI Mode and turn Parameter Value until the desired mode (0, 1, 3 or 4) appears in the Value / Parameter display. 031207 TO TURN MIDI OFF - Set mode to 0. 031208 TO TURN MIDI ON - Set mode to 1, 3 or 4. 031209 SELECT DOUBLE MODE - Hold MIDI Channel and press Program / Parameter 7. Selects mode 4, with external wheels and program changes enabled over MIDI. Used when the Multi-Trak is combined with another keyboard. Also commands slave to switch into same condition. 031210 ENABLE / DISABLE EXTERNAL PROGRAM CHANGES - Hold MIDI Channel and press Program / Parameter 5. When enabled, "on" appears in the display. Toggles (switches) the ability for the Multi-Trak's program changes to select and be selected by another instrument via MIDI.

031211 ENABLE / DISABLE EXTERNAL WHEEL CHANGES - Hold MIDI Channel and press Program / Parameter 4. When enabled, "on" appears in the display. Allows the Multi-Trak to be controlled by another instrument's Pitch and Mod wheels over MIDI. 031212 ENABLE / DISABLE EXTERNAL KEYBOARD PRESSURE - Hold MIDI Channel and press Program / Parameter 6. When enabled, "on" appears in the display. If enabled, MIDI-equipped pressure-sensitive keyboards control the Multi-Trak's modulation (as Mod wheel). 031213 DUMP ALL PROGRAMS AND STACKS - Hold MIDI Channel and press Program / Parameter 0. 031214 DUMP CURRENT PROGRAM - Hold MIDI Channel and press Program / Parameter 1. 031215 DUMP ALL SEQUENCES - Hold MIDI Channel and press Program / Parameter 2. 031216 DUMP CURRENT SEQUENCE - Hold MIDI Channel and press Program / Parameter 3. 031217 LOCAL ON / OFF - Hold MIDI Channel and press Program / Parameter 9. When "on" appears in the display, the Multi-Trak is in Local On, or normal playing mode. Local off disconnects the Multi-Trak's keyboard and front panel controls from the synthesizer voices. All control is done via MIDI. The keyboard information still goes out over MIDI. 040000 TROUBLE SHOOTING 040001 ABNORMAL 'POWER-ON' INDICATIONS - When power is first switched on, the Value / Parameter display should read 00 and one of the Seq LEDs should light. Chorus On / Off may also light. If instead the instrument goes through a tune routine, counting from 1 to 6 in the Value / Program display, you have a problem. 040002 LOW BATTERY INDICATIONS - When the batteries are low, the instrument will give abnormal 'power-on' indications, replace all programs with a low moan or silent patch, and impossible parameter settings become possible (a parameter that is only supposed to go to 30 will go to 75). 040003 NO LEDS - Check the power source. - Check that the Multi-Trak is turned on. - There is no fuse to check. 040004 AUDIO - Check that Master Volume is turned up. - Check that track volumes are not set too low. - Try other programs or the Basic Patch (hold Program Record and 8). - Check your amplifier and output cable. 040005 MEMORY - If the display counts from 1 to 6 when power is switched on, there may be a memory problem. Check your sequences and a few programs to see if they are as recorded. 040006 CONTROL

- If the keyboard or the controls "lock up," check that you are not making an operational error. - If necessary, reset the computer by switching power off, then, after a few moments, back on. 040007 SEQUENCER - If the sequencer does not work, check that the Speed knob is not all the way counterclockwise. - If sequences play back with erroneous note timing, check the Autocorrect setting. - If sequences have been lost and the sequencer is not functioning ("locked up"), it can be reset. Be sure you are not making an operational error, because resetting will erase anything you have recorded under both sequences. To reset the sequencer, press both Record switches simultaneously and release, then press both Record switches again. 040008 INITIALIZING THE PITCH WHEEL - If recorded sequences play back in a different tuning than they were recorded in, or voices go out of tune with each other when the pitch wheel is moved, the pitch wheel may need initializing. Hold Program Record and press 3, then move the wheel and return it to center. 040009 REVISIONS - The instrument was produced in two basic versions. The first, rev B, has several modifications to the PC boards to improve performance. Early rev B's may not have all the mods installed. Rev C, in addition to incorporating these mods onto the boards, had a redesigned non-volatile memory chip. To determine which rev of the instrument you are working on, look at the circuit boards. Each board has a rev letter clearly marked on the component side silkscreen. Rev A boards are electrically the same as rev B, so any mix of rev A and B boards can be used in a rev B instrument. 040010 HUM OR NOISE - Some early instruments (serial number 684 and lower) had excessive hum and noise. The procedure to address this problem may be included in a future edition of this FAQ. 040011 KEYBOARD DOESN'T WORK UNLESS... - Occasionally, when power is first turned on, the keyboard does not work until a certain key is hit or power is turned off and on again (serial number 100 and lower). The procedure to address this problem may be included in a future edition of this FAQ. 040012 SHORTING - Various problems can be caused by pins shorting to traces. The procedure to address this problem may be included in a future edition of this FAQ. 040013 DAC TRIM - Hold Program Record and press Program / Parameter 7. This sets the DAC output to 0v to allow you to measure the DAC offset. This also locks-up the computer: reset by switching power off then on again. 040014 STACK/SPLIT PROBLEMS - Exceptionally early models, when playing a polyphonic split with two different programs on the right side of the split point, would load the last program used into track 6 irregardless of what program had been assigned to that track.

040015 MECHANICAL DISASSEMBLY - Turn off power and remove power chord from the rear panel connector. - Of the five screws on each side panel, remove the top two and loosen the remaining three. - Remove four screws on the rear, holding the top two panel to the bottom panel. - Remove the top panel from the chassis. There should be enough keyboard cable so that the panel may be propped up in a working position without disconnecting the cable. Be careful not to scratch the panel. Place it on a protective pad. - Power may be reapplied and the instrument tested in this position. - To gain access to the computer board, first unplug the power supply cable, then remove the seven screws holding it in place. Gently pull it out, disengaging the connectors holding it to the chassis. - Boards one and two must be removed together. First, pull the knobs off from the top and remove the Pitch and Mod wheel cable. Then remove the fourteen screws holding it together. 040016 MECHANICAL REASSEMBLY - Reverse order of disassembly. - When installing the computer board to the top panel, be careful to put the threaded standoffs in their correct holes (there are two different sizes). - Do not over-tighten standoffs. - Line up the connectors carefully before plugging them in. Be sure to install lockwashers between all standoffs and the computer board. - Test the instrument to make sure the keyboard and wheels have been plugged in. Test the Master Volume and Master Tune controls. If they do not work, the connectors may not have been lined up. - Tighten all screws. 040017 BOARD EXTENDER - Ordinarily, troubleshooting of boards one and two can be done with the computer board removed. However, in a few cases, the computer board must be installed and operating while probing test points on board two. For this purpose, a board extender kit (SCI part # PC-0615-BS) was developed, consisting of a board that could be used with ordinary double-row header cables. 040018 REPLACING THE BATTERY - The Multi-Trak was designed to use a 2.9 volt lithium battery. It can use a 3 volt lithium battery with no troubles. - A 3 volt lithium cylinder battery with tabs can be obtained from Digi-Key (1-800-344-4539). - Solder the battery in place with the usual precautions. 050000 TIPS AND TRICKS 500001 LAYERING SOUNDS WHILE SEQUENCING - While the Six-Trak used the same filters as the Prophet 5, the Multi-Trak and Split-Eight used filters from Fatari of Italy. The sounds of the Six-Trak and Multi-Trak are very similar but not identical. - Recording a sequence using a single program in several tracks can sound thin, even when using a program with the Unison parameter set to 1 (on). - Rather than recording several tracks at the same time, record each one individually. This will make the sound much more full.

050002 USE MIX AND INDIVIDUAL OUTS - Tracks are removed from the mix outputs when individual outs are used. Place effects on individual tracks and mix the rest. 050003 APPROXIMATING SENDING AND RECEIVING ON TWO MIDI CHANNELS - Change the Multi-Trak to MIDI Mode 4. - Stack one or both halves of a split, so each side plays monophonically. - A slave instrument will play one or the other half of a split but not both. 050100 CONVERTING PROGRAMS BETWEEN THE SIX-TRAK AND THE MULTI-TRAK - The Six-Trak and the Multi-Trak use almost the same set of parameters to create programs. Programs can easily be converted between the two instruments. Aside from the following two differences, parameters have a direct correlation. - The Six-Trak does not have velocity sensitivity: parameters D1, D2 and D3 have no equivalent in the Six-Trak. - Parameters B6, B7, B9, C6, C7, C9, D6, D7 and D9 are double in the Multi-Trak what they are in the Six-Trak. A B6 setting of 14 on the Multi-Trak is the same as a setting of 7 on on 06 the Six-Trak. 050101 MULTI-TRAK TO SIX-TRAK - Use the following template to convert Multi-Trak programs to Six-Trak programs.
