Welcome
Orbx would like to thank you for purchasing FTX NA BLUE USA Canada Pacific Northwest (FTX PNW). FTX PNW has taken over fourteen months to produce, and is the culmination of nearly five years of research and development beginning with the FS2004 VOZ projects, through to the debut scenery series for FSX from Orbx called FTX Australia. Much of the technology developed for the Australian Orbx series was further refined and enhanced for the FTX PNW region, making it our showcase product.

The Beautiful Pacific Northwest We chose to begin our North American series of regions in the Pacific Northwest simply because it offers some of the most diverse and beautiful areas in the entire planet to explore in Flight Simulator X. It's a bush flyer's paradise and for good reason, with spectacular geographical features unlike anywhere else on Earth. This product covers about 156,000 square miles of western North America comprised of large parts of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. It reaches from north of Vancouver Island to southern Oregon and inland to just east of the crest of the Cascade mountains. Major cities in the region are Vancouver (BC), Seattle (WA), and Portland (OR). The following pages will provide more detail of the actual coverage area. Geography Dominated by the towering volcanoes and sharp ridges of the Cascade Ranges and Coast Mountains the Pacific Northwest of North America also features large metropolitan areas, flat valley bottoms with extensive farmland, hundreds of coastal islands of all sizes, and endless forested mountains with a long history of forestry operations. More than 450 airfields, from large international airports to tiny airstrips, are spread throughout the region, each of which have been enhanced over the default with corrections to runway position, elevations and many additional buildings and objects placed by hand. Climate This region is the home of the temperate rainforests of North America along its rain soaked outer coast. At the same time the wide range of elevations (sea level to >13,000ft) and the rain shadow effect of mountain ridges running parallel to the coast strongly influence the local climate and its seasonal variations.

Compatibility Notes
Please visit http://orbxsystems.com/forums/index.php?board=118.0 for the latest compatibility information between FTX PNW and third party addons.

FLIGHT1 - ULTIMATE TERRAIN X (UTX)

FTX PNW uses a new form of FSX 'Exclude-All' to hide UTX from under the FTX PNW scenery. This means that the transition from UTX to PNW should be seamless as you cross the boundaries. However, the UTX night lighting cannot be excluded using the FTX 'Exclude-All', so we will prepare some instructions on the FTX Support forums link shown above. For now, disable the UTX night lights when in PNW.

FSADDON - VANCOUVER+
Orbx and FSAddon have signed a cooperative agreement whereby a special version of Vancouver+ called Vancouver+ for FTX will be released soon after FTX PNW is released. FSAddon are kind enough to offer discounts to encourage people to purchase this excellent addon by Holger Sandmann and Jon Patch, which enhances the greater Vancouver area quite substantially. Jon Patch has been a part of the Orbx beta team to ensure compatibility. For more information visit http://forums.fsaddon.eu/viewforum.php?f=15 If the Vancouver+ for FTX product update is not yet released when you read this, we recommend you disable your current installed version of V+, since it will conflict with FTX PNW. We envisage that the enhanced FTXcompatible version should be available soon, if not already.

FLIGHT1 - GROUND ENVIRONMENT X (GEX)

GEX is a default FSX texture replacement product and their textures won't appear inside FTX PNW since we use custom landclass textures which are called from within the ORBX folders only. This means you will see GEX outside the FTX PNW boundaries, and our textures as soon as you cross over into PNW. There is nothing to do when flying inside FTX PNW. However, you may want to use FTX Central to switch to the 'Default' region when flying outside PNW with GEX in different parts of North America.

FLIGHTSIMSTORE - REAL ENVIRONMENT XTREME (REX)

FTX PNW is 100% compatible with REX and you don't need to do anything special to use REX whilst flying over PNW. In fact, most of the Orbx developers and beta testers use REX, and it's an Orbx recommended addon.

THIRD PARTY TERRAIN MESH

Third-party add-on terrain mesh files are compatible as long as they don't provide a higher resolution than 10m and their scenery library position is of lower priority than FTX PNW.

FTX Central Explained

FTX Central is the one-stop application which controls all aspects of Orbx's FTX regions and airports as you purchase and install them for FSX. It's an easy to use tool that provides convenient access to the user manuals and any Control Panels that come with FTX airports, plus other utilities in the Tools menu. After running the FTX PNW installer, there will be a shortcut to the FTX Central application in your Windows Start Menu, under the Orbx program group. When FTX Central is first run after the installer has completed, simply select North America and then Apply.

From the main screen you can also view any PDF user guide document of Orbx products that are installed or that you may purchase and install at a later time. TIPS ON USING 'DEFAULT FSX' To restore your FSX to how it was before you installed FTX, simply select the Default FSX region. We recommend to always select Default FSX when installing non-Orbx addons If you are not sure about FTX working with another addon, simply select Default FSX before installing

Orbx FTX NA BLUE USA Canada Pacific Northwest Version 1.0 User Guide February 2010

Page 6

FTX Central has other functions in its menus. From the Tools menu you can access the following:

Scenery Library Configuraton This is a useful tool which allows you to control the 'insertion' point at which all the Orbx FTX entries are placed in your FSX Scenery Library. We've added this function because in some case other scenery addons need to be placed above FTX (for example, OZx or Tongass Fjords X)

If you select FTX Scenery Library Insertion Points option, you'll be presented with another window like the one below which allows you to scroll through your FSX scenery library entries. You simply select the entry at which all FTX scenery library entries are inserted above, and click on the 'Set Insertion Point' button.

Orbx FTX NA BLUE USA Canada Pacific Northwest Version 1.0 User Guide February 2010

Page 7

The other function here is Validate Scenery.cfg - this should only be used when instructed by Orbx support staff to validate that your scenery.cfg file is in the correct condition.

Reports The reports tool simply scans the ORBX folders to report back on what products are installed. The other function Validate Region Files is another debug tool which should only be used when instructed by Orbx staff.

On selecting FTX Products Installed, you will see a pop-up window listing all the Orbx products installed and their version numbers. The resulting window will look similar to the one below, but of course will vary depending on which Orbx products you have installed.

FTX Aero The FTX Aero Tools menu item will only be displayed if you have purchased an Orbx FTX airport which came bundled with the FTX Aero tool, a unique addon which adds custom textures to an airport's environment for added realism. For more information about FTX Aero and how to use it, please consult the User Guide which comes with the Orbx FTX Airports which have Aero bundled.

FTX Lights Tweaker This is a shortcut to the tool used to change the types and size of the 3D lights in FTX. See page 20 for more information about this tool.

Flush Scenery Indexes This is a tool which should only be used when instructed by Orbx support staff. It will force a flush of the scenery indexes cache and generally it is not required to be used for general FSX use with FTX.

Help | Orbx FTX Support Forums This is a handy quick link to the Orbx FTX Support forums, which will call your default web browser and the forums home page.

KMZ Coverage and Features Map in Google Earth

You can view the coverage and features map interactively in Google Earth by loading the FTX PNW Coverage and Features Map.kmz which you'll find in your ORBX\User Documents folder in your FSX root folder. Once loaded into Google Earth, you can select all or some of the features included in the scenery, and the corresponding icons will appear inside the map boundary. You can click on each item on the map for a popup balloon which provides details for that airport or POI. This is a useful tool to begin to explore the features and points of interest included in FTX PNW.

Seasonal Variations and Lighting

With FTX, we don't just do an area once, we do it eight times, with unique texture coloring across five seasons and distinct unique FTX lighting which comes into its own at dawn, dusk and night. Here's an example of one scene across these variations.

Very few scenery products go to this level of depth in a small area, let alone 156,000 square miles. We are confident you will be absolutely thrilled with the diversity and depth of FTX PNW across all seasons and times of day.

Page 13

What is Custom Landclass?

Landclass are special files which reside in the scenery layer pie, and their role is to tell FSX what type of ground texture to place in any given square kilometer cell. In other words, landclass files tell the simulator to place a field here, a township there, forest here, and a railway yard there, and so on. As far as we are aware, FTX is the first flight simulation product to feature totally hand-crafted landclass on such a large scale. Many global or country-specific addon landclass products for FSX are created using various data sources and compiled using automated scripts and then manually rectified for obvious errors. Not so with FTX. The diagram below gives you an idea of the custom landclass which was shipped with FTX PNW. Every single square mile in the green highlighted areas was hand placed by expert landclass developers, using a combination of many sources, including street maps, aerial photos, and topography charts to name a few.

The result is nothing like you have ever experienced before, with an almost photoreal feel to all areas which have been edited, but with the added benefit of faster loading times, full five seasons support and handplaced custom autogen and library objects in every single kilometer of the region. Eventually, like FTX Australia, entire countries will be covered completely with the FTX custom landclass, and photoreal scenery products consuming thousands of GBs of your hard drives will be a thing of the past.

Recommended FSX Slider Settings

Firstly, like default FSX, dragging all your sliders to the right even with todays modern hardware, will for most people result in very poor visuals and performance. We suggest that you begin your exploration of FTX PNW using the slider settings shown below, and then if you find performance to be acceptable, you can move certain sliders to the right, although we recommend you only move one slider at a time to gauge the effect. The most critical slider in FSX is the Autogen Density slider. With the way FTX PNW has been designed, it has the single most critical performance effect in the simulator. We'll discuss the best settings for this slider later.

So before you begin your first flight, please change your FSX sliders to what is shown on the following pages. You may think the settings are too low at first, but we're calling these the PNW BASE SETTINGS which is the recommended settings for medium spec PCs.

Orbx FTX NA BLUE USA Canada Pacific Northwest Version 1.0 User Guide February 2010

Page 16

* Mesh resolution must be set to 2m if you are using Orbx 7S3 Stark's Twin Oaks Airport, else set it to 5m to cater for the Fire Tower Helipads which are positioned for 5m mesh resolution. * Please refer to the Autogen Density Table further in this user guide for specific information about this slider

Page 18

The Autogen Density Slider

Because FTX uses much denser, more accurately placed autogen objects in its annotation, having it set to Extemely Dense in large cities like Vancouver, Seattle or Portland will bring even the most powerful PC to its knees. We won't mince our words - FTX is not designed to give you a 60FPS experience with all sliders maxed. The key thing to remember is that FTX PNW is designed to be used both today and in the FUTURE, meaning that we did not cripple the product on release to cater for a broad range of PCs, but rather created a standard which will be enjoyed by most people as hardware catches up.

Here's a simple table which should be used as a guide for the Autogen Density slider. This has been indexed to PCs as at January 2010, which means this table will become dated rather quickly. We expect the 'Extreme' spec PC to be the Entry Level by mid 2012, so of course as FSX gets older, your PCs are likely to get faster. That said, if you adhere to these slider settings in FTX PNW you will get a good balance between visuals and performance.

PC Specifications (Circa Jan 2010)

Entry Level Core2 Duo <= 2.5Ghz | < 512MB GPU Mid Range Core2 Duo >= 2.8Ghz | 512MB+ GPU High End Intel i7 9xx < 4Ghz (not OC) | 1GB GPU Extreme Intel i7 9xx >= 4Ghz (OC) | 1-2GB GPU

The 3D Lighting System

FTX uses a new 3D lighting system developed by Orbx and exclusive to our products. This system creates multi-colored lighting for all roads in urban areas and major roads in towns. The lighting system is also implemented as autogen in the textures themselves, so you will find cities are depicted very accurately and you can actually see towns approaching during night flights over remote areas. To provide you with the most flexibility, we decided to create a special little program called the FTX Lights Tweaker, which will allow you to tune both the halo style and the effect size for the lights. To access this application, from FTX Central, select the Tools | FTX Lights Tweaker option. The interface looks like the screenshot below.

Theres not a lot to it. You select one of six halo effects (each has a description and a summary of its pros and cons), and then select the size of the effect. Out of the box, FTX is set to the REX1 halo, with a size of 11. We found this to be the best balance between size and visibility range. You can play with the application as much as you want until you find the right balance. FSX cannot be running while you run it however. A special thanks to Tim Fuchs, developer of Real Environment Xtreme and Mark Poole for their contributions to the halos in FTX.

Custom Orbx Weather Themes

We've included six custom weather themes with FTX PNW. If you've used our FTX Australia series, you will be familiar with Orbx Weather 1 through 4. New to FTX PNW are Orbx Weather 5 and 6 which are designed to create brooding, moody weatherscapes that hardened bush pilots revel in. In other words, if you don't want to dial up real world weather and need a challenge for that Piper Cub, dial up Orbx Weather 5 for some real fun!

You can select these themes anytime before or during a flight and we've included a brief description of what you can expect from the theme in the description text below the screenshot.
