tion???come up with a general rule Reading is an interactive process Reading is a life-support system=read different kinds of texts and for all kinds of purposes Reading is not a single skill that that we use all the time in the same way but it is a multiple skills that is used differently with different kinds of texts and fulfilling different purposes Wide reading experience in a particular kind of text is often necessary for proper understanding of any one instance of the kind of writing What reading enables a person to do must be perceived as interesting and worthwhile. Otherwise, no reading will take place beyond school and beyond the stages of learning to read Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested (Francis Bacon, 1625)

To fulfill the following purposes: To get an overview-background reading, a very useful technique to get the various issues related to the topic or subject matter To locate specific information-meanings of words how? A specific quotation how? Details about a person Location of a place/landmark? Statistics Practical application-to apply knowledge to a practical situation e.g. manuals.., recipes To develop detailed and analytical understanding-in academic reading, it is often necessary to be thorough about what you read in order to understand, analysis, compare and evaluate materials. Academic materials: books, journal articles, reports, theses etc Need the SQ3R technique-is an active and systematic approach to read academic materials. This method helps to link up new information with what you already know it is thorough, analytical, evaluative. S=survey Q=question R=read R=recite R=review

2. Skimming to gain general impression, superficial knowledge. Skimming is a selective reading in a speedy manner. It is an efficient technique for getting a general idea, without reading every word from a book. By skimming, you are able to get an overview of the authors main line o argument and identify the main ideas or theme of the book or article.

3. Scanning-look for specific information, read what is necessary. Scanning is a very quick absorption of the content and is done when you want to locate specific information. Scanning is done to locate the information required quickly and efficiently. In scanning, you read no more than absolutely necessary. Scanning will provide a moderate level of information. Most web pages may be read by using this technique.
