Week Two Quiz
1. In a Gallup poll of 1,038 adults, 540 said that second-hand smoke is very harmful. What is the percentage of adults who said second-hand smoke is very harmful? Show the problem: 540 divided by 1038 = 0.5202 Answer: 52% of adults said second-hand smoke is very harmful

2. The first class in a relative frequency table is 5059 and the corresponding

relative frequency is 0.2. What does the 0.2 value indicate? Answer: The 0.2 is the same as 1/5 or 20% and indicates that 20% of the data values are in this interval or category. 3. When you add the values 3, 5, 8, 12, and 20 and then divide by the number of values, the result is 9.6. Which term best describes this value: average, mean, median, mode, or standard deviation? Answer: It is an average of those numbers and is also the mean of this data set 4. What is the range of the values 2.0, 3.7, 4.9, 5.0, 5.7, 6.7, 8.5, and 9.0? Answer: Because range is the difference between the lowest value, (2.0) and the highest value, (9.0); for these values, it is 7.0 What is the median? Because we have 8 numbers we look at the two middle numbers, (only after placing them in ascending order-which these values are already). The two middle values are 5.0 and 5.7. We add these two together, and then divide this sum by 2 (because we have 2 values). This is basically how we find the mean, except we are doing it with only the middle 2 numbers. The median is 5.4. What is the mean? The mean is calculated by adding all values and then dividing the sum by the number of values added together. In this case the mean is: 5.7 What is the mode? There is no mode in this sample because each value only appears once.
