CHRIS-MARINE has the knowledge

Chris-Marine offers several solutions for carrying out cylinder liner maintenance according to the designers specifications on surface parameters and surface geometry. We cooperate very closely with the major engine manufacturers and we have achieved a considerable knowledge on the subject. The following can be achieved with our products: rectify scuffing and micro seizures and create the specified surface structure for all kinds of liners. create a wavecut pattern (MAN B&W 2-stroke engines). powerful honing tools specially designed for large-bore liners. deglaze liners of medium sized engines where no or slight wear and ovality occur. remove wear edges safely. Benefits: minimize the lube-oil consumption and increase service life of cylinder liners and piston rings, thus reducing cylinder liner wear and generate significant savings in operation cost. minimize the risk of blow-by. Improved operating economy: Improved service life of liners and rings is the result of rectifying the liner surface imperfections. The piston rings wear-in is improved and the lube-oil consumption is markedly reduced. With the liner maintenance machine permanently available in the machine room, it is always possible to carry out the maintenance in-situ. The maintenance time and overhaul costs can then be quite limited. The return on investment: The considerable reduction in lube-oil consumption, piston ring wear, overhaul down-time combined with the over all engine performance secures a quick return on investments, very often in less than a year. Honing and deglazing: - Honing rectifies the shape of the liner, remove scuffing and restores surface cross pattern. - Deglazing restore surface cross pattern.

Restoring roundness in various worn cylinder liners

Oval cylinder liners is a common problem that should be regularly dealt with. Other types of wear can also occur. Round cylinder liners can be achieved by using a machine with: adequately designed 4- or 8-armed honing head with a rack and pinion system a totally reliable mechanical or pneumatical stone pressure adjustment system

Trumpet shaped cylinder liners

Scuffing marks whether caused by worn piston rings, carbon deposits or fuel borne contaminants must be dealt with a high capacity honing machine that: comes with a variety of tested and proven honing stones has a suitable stroke length

As cylinder liners usually wear at the top sooner than the bottom, a trumpet shape can sometimes occur. This has to be removed leaving a long transition that reduces the load exerted on both the piston and the piston rings. A cylindrical or slightly tapered geometry can best be achieved with a machine that: is specially designed for demanding cylinder liner maintenance work provides for the correct honing methods for different kinds of cylinder liners

The above diagrams show three profile curves taken from cylinder liner walls with a surface roughness instrument. Fig 1: Prior to honing, almost complete glazed. Fig 2: After basic honing a rough surface with deep grooves and high peaks. Fig 3: After plate honing, peaks have been honed down using fine stones, and the resulting smooth surface provides a good running surface for the piston rings. The proper restoration of the surface profile in worn cylinder liners can only be achieved with a machine that: comes with a large variety of tested and proven honing stones has a totally reliable mechanical or pneumatical stone pressure adjustment system

The wavecut surface gives a good adhesion of the lube-oil, whereas the smooth surface reduces the ability of the lube-oil to adhere to the surface. The WGM machine restores the liner surface to the original condition within the normal time for a piston overhaul. Other noteworthy main advantages of this machine include the easy operation and alignment, and the short machining time of approximately two hours per cylinder liner.

Godby Shipping, an landia based shipping company, is one of the first uers of the DGL deglazing machine. Mr Johan Ruukholm, 1:st engineer on Miranda, a 7440 dwt roro vessel, has deglazed 12 liners using the DGL. The vessel has a Wrtsil 12W46DWI engine. The simplicity of the DGL is a great advantage. - The DGL machine is easy to use and works very well, Mr Ruukholm explains. The time needed to deglaze each cylinder depends of course on the liner, but an average value is 3045 minutes per liner. Mr Ruukholm also mentions that the simplicity of the DGL and its operation is a great advantage.
