Assignment no 1
PROBLEM NO 1

GIVEN DATA:
Electricity Consumption = 110^6 KWH
Fuel consumed (Number 2) = 3000 Gallons
Area = 45000 SQ FT
Conditioned Space = 45000 SQ FT
Conversion used
1KWH = 3412 BTU
1 gallon #2 oil = 138,500 BTU
Reference: http://www.generatorjoe.net/html/energy.html
Average office building EUI = 193 thousand BTU/SQUARE FEET / YEAR
Reference: http://www.siteselection.com/theEnergyReport/2010/jul/EnergyEfficiency.cfm
Solution:

Electric energy consumed in BTU/year = (1 10^6 KWH) (3412 BTU/KWH) =3412000000

BTU/year
Energy consumed by fuel in BTU/year = 3000138500=415500000 BTU/year
Total energy consumed =3827500000 BTU/year
Energy Utilization Index (EUI) = Total Energy / Conditioned Space
= (3827500000)/ (45000)
= 85055 BTU/SQUARE FEET/YEAR
=85.055 thousand BTU/SQUARE FEET/YEAR
Building Average Energy Utilization Index as per the US department of energy (In thousand
BTU per Sq Ft per year) for office building is 193.00 comparing with the given building which
has EUI of 85.055 shows that there is less potential for energy saving

From the regression analysis of the given set of data we can obtain the equation of the line
as shown in which the constant indicates the production unrelated energy. We can
estimate the energy consumption from the equation
Estimated Energy = 0.282x+623.19 = 0.282 1000 + 612.8 = 894.8 KWH
The fixed energy consumption is 612.8 KWH this is the production unrelated energy
consumption which may be used for other reasons such as for Air conditions, Heaters or for
lighting etc which are production unrelated activities in the industry consuming electricity

Interpretation forms the Graph:

As seen in the graph from the month of May till August shows the upward inclined
line which indicates that there has been increase in the energy consumption during
this month and there is potential for energy conservation so it is our target area
The other line for month of Oct to Dec shows downward sloping line which indicates
there is less consumption of energy during these months

Problem No 3
For Gator Company following data is provided
The Base line electricity cost is = $15 per Million BTU
This year Cost =$18 per Million BTU
No of cooling days per year= 2000
Production = 1000 units per year
Solution:
Total Energy Consumption Before fuel Switching and Its cost
Total Energy = (75 2000+ 100 1000) Million BTU
= 250000 Million BTU
Total cost =15 250000 = $3,750,000

Total Energy consumption after fuel switching and its cost:

Total energy consumption= (80 2000 +115 1000) Million BTU
= 275000 Million BTU
Total Cost = 18 275000 = $ 4,950,000
Cost of switching Fuel = Cost after Switching fuel- Cost before switching fuel
=$ 4,950,000 - $3,750,000 = $1,200,000
=1.2 Million

Problem No 4
Let: X =Production units
Z= Degree Days
L=Floor space
Y= Energy Forecast
Assume a=0
Now we know that Y = a+bX+cZ+dL........................ (1)
From above assumptions the equation becomes Y = bX+cZ+dL
For year 1995 we have X=600, Z=6750, L=150000 and Y=1000
For year 1996 we have X=650, Y=1100, Z=6800, L=150000
For year 1997 we have X=650,Y=1050, Z=6800, L=170000
Substituting in equation (1) we get
600b+6750c+150000d=1000............................. (2)
650b+6800c+150000d=1100.............................. (3)
650b+6800c+170000d=1050................................ (4)
Solving the above equations 2, 3 & 4simultaneously we get
c =0.28

d=-0.0025
b =1.967
Substituting the values in equations (1)
Energy Forecast = (1.971 (Production level)) + (0.028 (Degree Days)) (0.0025 (Floor space))
