Snow Bound Hunters

By Don Thomas LEWISTON, IDAHO A PARTY OF HUNTERS IS MAROONED BY HEAVY SNOW TONIGHT IN THE BALD MOUNTAIN REGION 38 MILES EAST OF PIERCE, IDAHO. DON THOMAS AND GENE WILSON, BOTH OF LEWISTON, IDAHO REPORTED THE HUNTERS PLIGHT BY SHORT-WAVE RADIO. THOMAS IS MANAGER OF LEWISTONS RADIO STATION KRLC AND WILSON IS CHIEF ENGINEER. THE TWO HAD TAKEN A SHORTWAVE TRANSMITTER ALONG ON THE ELK EXPEDITION. THEY SAY THE SNOWBOUND GROUP IS WARM AND COMFORTABLE BUT IS HOPING FOR HELP SOON. THEIR REPORTS INDICATE THAT EVEN JEEPS WOULD BE STALLED BY THE HUGE SNOWDRIFTS. UPI DISPATCH 11-49 There are still a good number of area hunters around who can recall that special year when snows came early in the Bitterroots and never left until break-up in the spring. Wilson and I had gone in for the opener and set up at Saddle Camp. A packer had taken over an old trappers cabin at the same location and brought into the mountains with him a pair of elderly pack horses, a young wife, five small children and little food. He was a ridge runner type who had acquired, among other skills, the one of living off the country and the hunters. While our trip was not successful from the standpoint of getting anything for the locker, it was a good one. We had seen game and know that we were in good game country. I dont know how many days we were afield but do recall we had a specific date, which we had to leave to meet with FCC representatives in Lewiston.

It was deep enough that the sled shaped steel plate protecting the crankcase was packing the snow, lifting the vehicle and robbing the tires of traction. We would shovel the top six inches out of a quarter mile of road and make a run at it and maybe pick up another quarter mile. Shortly before dark, we ran into a 16- foot snowdrift west of Bald Mountain. We turned around and headed back to the hunting camp and the late Fat Espey, of Potlatch, who packed the area. Rifle Shooting Tip - Choosing the Right Bullet

Every caliber of ammunition comes in various bullet shapes, weights and composition. Choosing the right bullet for your needs is an important factor in your shooting. While youre learning everything else about hunting, dont forget the importance of the right bullet. You can practice everything else, but it still comes down to the bullet. Is it heavy enough to do the job? Is it accurate enough to hit the target over the range you need? Knowing a bit about your ammunition choices and how they behave will help you succeed during hunting season, and you will be glad you did the research when you bring home that big elk. Once you pull the trigger, the bullet is responsible for bringing down your target. Some bullets are more appropriate for certain sized game than others, and some bullets your rifle is just going to be choosy about. You may need to compromise to get the right fit between the game youre hunting and what your rifle likes. Bullets are made to excel at different parameters. Depending on what you need, you can choose your ammunition according to the parameters you need for the game you are after. Different bullet parameters include minimum dispersion, minimum flight time, minimum cross wind sensitivity, minimum ballistic drop, maximum kinetic energy, maximum penetration and limiting maximum range. An example would be a heavier bullet shot at a lower muzzle velocity will minimize cross wind sensitivity. The heavier the bullet is that you choose, the more of the bullets body is given over to ogive length, which reduces the drag. The majority of bullets cannot improve in more than a single parameter at a time, so choosing one will compromise others. others.

Water is Key to Complete Backyard Wildlife Habitat

While most species need to consume water regularly, either directly or through their food, some also require it for cleanliness and fitness. Many birds need water for bathing and post-bath preening to keep their feathers in shape to provide all weather protection. The provision of water, including through fall and winter freezes, can turn an average wildlife habitat into an extraordinary one.

Testing it on the shooting range is a good way to find this out. While accuracy is important, performance is more important, especially if you are hunting larger game. On the deer, you may notice very minimal damage around the entrance hole from your chosen bullet, even if it is an expanding bullet. There may even be very little blood loss at the site. You may find no exit wound, most of the time the bullet will be found lodged just beneath the skin on the far side of the animal. However, if your shot was accurate, the lungs should be torn up like they went through the blender and the animal should have dropped Ogive length is the long thin part that extends at the quickly. front of some bullets, giving them a rocket-type look. If providing open water consistently through winter is difficult for you, consider other ways you can help your backyard birds and other wildlife. Drinking water is obtained by some animals through fleshy fruits, berries and other plants they eat in your landscape. Some birds bathe in dust, rather than water, sifting and shaking soft, dry soil through their feathers to clean them for thermal regulation. Wrens, sparrows, quail, grouse, pheasants and hawks will enjoy vigorous dust baths in a tilled garden space or specially-dug area with a mixture of loose sand, loamy soil, and wood ashes.

Those fortunate enough to have a natural waterway running through their property already have that extraordinary status. But most of us need to create sources of water, either building ponds, ditches, landscape swales, or rain gardens, or setting up birdbaths. http://wdfw.wa.gov/ The trick with maintaining a birdbath through the winter months in many parts of the Northwest, of course, is keeping the water thawed. Birds need to drink and bathe even on the coldest days, and although they can use snow and melting ice, open water may be more attractive. Keeping water just above freezing between dawn and dusk, when birds are active, is key. You can keep a birdbath free of ice by regularly pouring water into the bowl, but that quickly becomes tedious during extreme cold when water freezes rapidly. A stick of wood left in the water during cold snaps can help you pop out the ice so you can add fresh water. When the water freezes, the stick will also help prevent the birdbath from cracking. Providing water next to a reflecting window can also help keep it open. Birdbaths equipped with submersible, thermostatically controlled heaters will save time and maybe the birdbath itself. Small heaters designed to operate at a depth of one to three inches, many with automatic shut-off features when water levels drop or evaporate, are available through garden and hardware stores that cater to bird-feeding enthusiasts, and catalogues or on-line businesses. Be careful about the source of electricity needed to run a birdbath heater. Outdoor outlets should be on a circuit or outlet protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), which will cut off the flow of electricity in the event of a short. Most outlets in newer homes are GFCI-protected, but if youre not sure about yours, have outlets checked by an electrician. Providing water for birds and other wildlife comes with the responsibility to keep the water clean to prevent diseases from spreading. This is especially important during warm months, but periodic thaws during cool months can be deadly, too. Scrub the birdbath a few times each month or briskly hose it out to remove algae and bacteria. Change the water frequently; locating the birdbath near a hose bib is a good idea. Never add

Knife Collecting a Great Hobby for Young and Old

Knife collecting can be a fun way to collect something from another era. It can also be a very profitable hobby. Beginning with knowing what types of knives are out there and which ones are real and which are fakes or counterfeits, you must do some homework before purchasing your first knife. Even experts who have been collecting knives for years have been duped by counterfeits and fakes because they were not paying close enough attention to the details. he was watching a duel and many of the bystanders lost control and began fighting. To properly clean your knives you will need oil, a soft cotton rag and cotton swabs. If you have a knife with rust, all is not lost, take a cotton swab and dab a little oil on the spots, and let it sit for a few days. When you return, gently pick the rust off with another knife, leaving the original stainless steel or finish intact. Use the oil on the rag and gently wipe the width of the blade, always pushing away from you with the sharpened edge facing away from you. Displaying your collection of knives needs to be done delicately. Each of these three have their own traits that are unique to them. Once you choose such a dog, the trainer needs to make the most out of their unique traits. In the field, if you have a small handkerchief, it can help you determine the wind direction if you cant feel it clearly. Next you need to assign a wind value. Visualize a clock face. You face twelve oclock. Wind from twelve oclock and six oclock will have no value, they will not affect the bullet. The same wind from three oclock and nine oclock, however will have full value, and youll need to correct for a strong wind from these directions. Visualizing the clock face, full value will cover from two to four oclock and from eight to ten oclock. The areas between twelve and two, four and six, six and eight, and ten and twelve are given half value. These areas may require some compensation on your part if the wind is strong enough. Now that you know how to evaluate the wind value, lets imagine youre in the field. You ask yourself, How much is the wind worth? The wind will affect your bullet through a combination of several factors, like the weight and caliber of the bullet, its ballistic efficiency and the time of its flight. Lets take a look at an example. If your target is 600 yards away, a 1mph Full Value

Elements of Good Shooting when Game Hunting

The basic factors of accurate field shooting are sight picture his rifle in a certain unchanging manner, but there is no sight and trigger squeeze. But alone they are not enough. There simply cannot be an unan experienced hunter is seeing the target in reference to changing target at an unchanging range in field shooting, rifle performance and not in reference to actual 200 yards with a rifleman getting the same sight picture each shot. of range. The fact of a 200 or 300-yard kill is always established after the shot, when the distance has been paced. The basic factors of accurate field shooting are sight picture and trigger squeeze. But alone they are not enough. The reason many excellent target range shots are not top performers in the game covers has been pondered by both the practical game shot and the very much more accurate target shot. Each time such inquiry is started, the investigation is centered about sight picture, trigger squeeze, the intangibles of woodcraft, with the probing for answers always stopping short of the actual cause of the discrepancy between range and field shooting. When a skilled field shot snaps his rifle to shoulder, his sights reaching for a running fox squirrel scurrying along a high limb toward the security of his den, the hunter checks There is also a difference between the let-off of a good field shot and an equally good target shot. This difference becomes more pronounced as a hunter takes to the woods after squirrel, rabbit or other rifle targets, such as deer or elk. Open range woodchuck, sod poodles and crow shooting have much more in common with target positions, with the rifleman taking his shot from long range, using orthodox target stances for his shooting. Afield shot is conscious of let-off. He wills the shot at the most opportune instant, unlike the range shot who is taught to put increasing pressure on his trigger, the rifle being fired without the rifleman being conscious of the exact instant it will fire. But even here the good field shot must have more than a precise let-off for top performance. That other, and all important factor in accurate field shooting is range picture. All skilled game shots, hunting anything from squirrel to moose, must have a range picture in reference to their rifle and target. This is the dividing line between good and mediocre field shooting. You must remember it if you want to clinch those vital targets that can take hours upon hours to make possible. The cost of factoring in a range picture is so little too, it just takes a little extra concentration. Article Source: http://www.besttoread.com

Fall To Do List from Your Backyard Wildlife Family

Your family may be making those fall outdoor chore lists, as daylight hours shrink, temperatures drop, and the urge grows to batten down the hatches in the yard and garden. Lets start with breathing. You may not have noticed, but actively breathing while you shoot can affect your success at bagging that deer. If you are inhaling or exhaling, your rifle will move slightly, throwing off your aim. It is very important to remember to hold your breath when you squeeze the trigger. Some experienced hunters will recommend that you take a deep breath, and then let out only half of it before holding the rest. Others will recommend that you take a deep breath, let it out, then take half a breath and hold it for the shot. Try both and see which feels more natural to you. If youve been climbing in rough terrain tracking your quarry, this may be more difficult than it sounds. There is a reason to take that deep breath before you squeeze the trigger. That deep breath fills your blood with oxygen, which will improve your aim. Holding your breath keeps the rifle steady, increasing the probability that your shot will hit its mark. Sometimes, after tracking your game, youll be in the situation where you have to take the shot now or not at all. What do you do? If you have to rush the shot, chances are youre going to miss anyway. If you dont have the time to make a proper shot, dont do it. It is better to take an extra second or two to take a deep breath and steady yourself... longer if youve been exerting yourself following your target. Youll be more successful if you take the time to breathe, hold and squeeze. Relaxing as you take the shot is a little harder, and youll need to practice this As you practice these skills, you should notice a marked increase in hitting your target with more accuracy. Like any skill, take the time to learn it until you dont need to think about it at the time youre making your shot... it should become an automatic reaction to seeing the target in your sight and taking aim. These areas may rection and be able to assign a value to the wind. Youll require some compensation on your part if the wind is strong enough. find this useful even on the shooting range. To determine wind speed, follow these guidelines: - 0 to 3 mph Wind is barely felt, but smoke drifts - 3 to 5 mph Wind can be felt lightly on your face - 5 to 8 mph Leaves on trees are in constant movement - 8 to 12 mph Dust and loose paper are raised - 12 to 15 mph Small trees begin to sway The direction of the wind is easily detected by flags at a shooting range or competition. In the field, if you have a small handkerchief, it can help you determine the wind direction if you cant feel Minute of Angle (MOA). This is a 1mph constant. So, if you know your winds value and speed, you can estimate a fairly accurate adjustment. Lets try another. The wind is blowing from the right to the left, so you have a right wind. This wind is a Full Value wind from three oclock (remember our imaginary clock). Your estimation of wind speed is approximately 8mph. If our 1mph constant is .5 MOA, you multiply 8 times .5, giving you a correction of 4 MOA. If the wind were at half value, you would adjust only 2 MOA. As you can see, a minor adjustment on your part can make a big difference in your accuracy in hitting a target.

Practice reading the wind and youll be able to hunt in many different weather conditions successfully. Now that you know how to evaluate the wind value, lets imagine youre in the field. You ask yourself, How Article Source: http://www.besttoread.com/ much is the wind worth? The wind will affect your bullet through a combination of several factors, like the weight and caliber of the bullet, its ballistic efficiency and the time of its flight. Lets take a look at an example. If your target is 600 yards away, a 1mph Full Value wind will move your bullet approximately 3 inches off target. At 600 yards, your 3 inches is equal to one-half

prepared for that second shot just in case. If you are hunting large or dangerous game, hesitating to admire your shot can be dangerous or even deadly. If your target is still standing after your first shot, shoot again. If your target is dangerous, like a bear or an African big game animal, shoot a second time no matter what. Approach the downed animal with caution. If you can approach it from the rear, all the better. It will give you a better vantage point if you need to do a third shot. No matter what size your target is, if you are in doubt, shoot again to be sure. Like anything else pertaining to hunting, you can practice lining up your second shot. By practicing, you will be less likely to stop and admire your first shot when you need that second shot most. The sign of an excellent hunter is always being prepared to bag his target. Practicing this skill will get you to that level more quickly. Article Source: http://www.besttoread.com/

How do you control your trigger? Youll find that if a trigger is lighter, it will be easier to control. While you dont want it too light, finding out what pressure is comfortable for you will make a huge difference in how your rifle handles. It will also depend on what kind of animal you are hunting. Large dangerous animals will need a heavier rifle. Many rifles that you buy today have a heavy trigger. Some allow you to adjust the trigger, others need the entire trigger replaced by a gunsmith. If this is not something you can afford or adapt, dont worry. Even a bad trigger can be controlled, it just takes practice. Like all other aspects of hunting, learning to control the trigger takes practice. If you only hunt a couple of times a year, you will not learn how to control your trigger. Visit the shooting range or set up a practice range where it is safe and practice year round until you can make that smooth movement on the trigger and stop anticipating the rifles response.
