When we started planning this
issue, we deliberated over the
idea of space. We cant call this
the small space issue - if you
dont live in a small space, how
will you be inspired? we thought.
But we neednt have worried!
Soon 70% of us will live in cities,
where the average living space
is small - 20m

. And there can
be space issues in any home,
large or small. So we agreed,
its not the size of the space that
matters, but how that space is
used. Thats why, in this issue,
we show you an industrial space,
a shared space, a small space,

ome changed for me and martin when ella
arrived. we met 10 years ago at a party
and something just clicked. we moved
in together six months later. in our rst house
everything was calm. we wanted a refuge,
somewhere we could be together. everything was
understated, in greys and beige tones. Now our lives
are a big burst of colour and energy, and our new
home reects that. the house was an impulse buy.
we knew we needed an extra room for ella, but were
only just beginning to look when we saw this house.
we fell for it instantly. it felt like something from
astrid lindgrens books about the Bullerby children
childhood favourites about kids who live in an
idyllic village in the countryside. we couldnt resist
that feeling, even though the house was smaller than
we had originally thought. we knew wed just have
to be smart about space. and it needed lots of work.
we do everything as a team, even the renovations.
it used to be that decorating was my hobby, but now
martin has been infected with the bug too. which is
great, because its hard to do things in the house at
the same time as looking after ella! we bounce ideas
about freely and ella gets involved in everything.

the space here is small, but i wanted it to feel
unied, with hidden storage solutions that dont
encroach on our oor space so theres room for ella
to run around. and being two very tidy people, we
wanted to keep the house from looking messy
quite a challenge when you live with an energetic
and enthusiastic two-year-old! But some of my best
ideas are inspired by ella. when she started to walk,
she began to bring her toys into the living room
thats where the idea for storage under the coffee
table came from. im even refurbishing a dolls house
i had as a child, turning it into a replica of our house.
ella is so much a part of us, we wanted the style
of our house to reect her personality as well as
ours. so all the splashes of bright colour, the toys
on display (both hers and ours!) make it feel like a
space for play, a space for all of us to be together.

hat we want from our home is the freedom
to do the things we love. you dont need
lots of space, just an idea of how to make
room for whats important. My style is minimalist,
I like it when you have almost nothing. But Galles
style is very maximalist, with candles, photos, softer
things This home is our evolving compromise.
Nathaniel doboin is sitting on the family sofa as he
speaks. his computer is set on a BEKVaM stool in
front of him. all morning, as our team has moved
around taking pictures of the converted printing
workshop he shares with his girlfriend Galle and
their daughter Flora (2), Nathaniel has set up ofce
in different parts of the apartment. Earlier it was the
dining table. Our old table is from a brocante there
are lots of good ones on the way to Belgium.
I love mixing new buys with reclaimed things.
Like our metal and clear plastic chairs mixed
with the old school chairs we saved from the skip.
Now Nathaniel is working in the narrow, light-lled
annexe he and Galle built last year. It is a bright,
comfy space to sit and read or relax. Galle is
passionate about reading. She works for the NGO
Fontaine O Livres, which lobbies to improve
independent book publishing in paris. Finding
space for her library, so her books dont have to
be packed away and out of sight, was important.
We dont have a lot of oor space in here, other than
that which is taken up by the sofa, but we thought
beyond that. There are the walls. We lled one with
shelves that reach up to the ceiling.
This used to be the perfect place to throw
parties. Before we built the annexe it was quite
dark, with few walls even the bath was out in the
open, remembers Nathaniel. It was wonderful in a
way, Galle agrees. She has joined us after taking
a nap in the bedroom well, she is due to give birth
to their second child in eight days! We had a lot of
parties when I rst moved in because we didnt have
children and we have a lot of friends. But a dark
space changes the way you feel at home. Its a nice
cocoon, which is good in the winter but at other
times its a little sad. Nathaniel and I grew up in the
south of France. Like plants, we thrive in sunshine.

In the original living room We dont
have a spare room but our sofa bed is
well used, says Nathaniel. The leather
chair was saved from the street we
xed the raggedy bits with black tape.
Its a good place to read but with less
natural light back here, we need a
good reading lamp.
In the new living area We chose a
sofa thats big enough for us all to lie
down on and listen to music or watch
a movie on the computer. Space is
limited but we used the full height
of the wall for our shelves.
In the bathroom I spend hours in
here with a book, says Galle. Its
good to have time and space to take
care of yourself. Before we had Flora
there was nothing separating the
bath from the rest of the living room.

Nathaniel and I rst met when we were 16.
We were at the same school and we kissed - once!
We both moved to Paris without knowing the other
one was here. And we both kept our friends from
home. It was when our friends invited us to a party
six years ago that we met again. First there was
surprise: "Is that you? Then: "BAM! Like a big love
story! Weve been together since then. I moved in
four years ago. Nathaniel had been here since 2004.
He found the place after putting notes under the
doors of old workshops in the area asking if anyone
was interested in selling. The notes didnt work,
says Nathaniel. But an agency called and asked if
I wanted to view this place. I like the fact that this
area and the homes in it have a history. When you
choose to live in a place like this, its good to live
with what was originally here rather than cover it up
or rip it out. I want to respect our homes industrial
past, so weve kept the brick exposed and furnished
the place with a mix of wood and metal. Industrial,
open-plan living is not a common choice for a family
home. But there is an authenticity and warmth at
the heart of this building, Nathaniel explains.
We did decide to make changes when Flora
was one. A year of living with her taught us that the
open layout wasnt working. There were no private
areas - our bed was in the living area. We asked our
friend Mina, an architect, to help us rethink the
space and so some walls went up. Now Galle and
I have a bedroom. It is typically Parisian - small
- just with space for a bed, side table and shallow
wardrobes with sliding doors. Flora also has a room.
Its small, but so is she so its more than enough!
Nathaniel and I love travel. It changes your idea of
home. When you can be happy with just a backpack
you realise that what matters is loved ones. Living
back within four walls, we judge that we are making
good use of our space if each of us is happy.

the design brief: The original plan was to make
a carafe that would be part of a set with drinking
glasses. The glasses didnt make it. But the carafes
shape is so strong and distinct, it stands on its own.
the inspiration: The plastic bottles you use to
spray plants in your garden. I like their sharp necks
and the way the bottles mix different proportions.
I liked the idea of putting two shapes together.
Distinguishing marks: The coloured
mouthblown glass. Its reminiscent
of water a subtle reminder to
drink water through the day!
the material: I love glass
the way light plays through
it gives it an almost living
quality. Here it makes a daily,
essential activity feel special
more than a plastic bottle.

Beckmans Principal Tom Hedqvist
t
he idea that we never stop learning is a
central philospohy at IKEA, and the new
range of IKEA metre fabrics shows this
principle in action. It was created after an intense
workshop with students from the Beckmans college
of Design led by renowned American illustrator
Laurie Rosenwald. Laurie is an illustrator and
designer, famous for her book jackets, packaging,
animation and posters. She divides her time between
New York and Sweden. When I teach my workshop
How to Make Mistakes on Purpose I call out: quick
and sloppy! and quantity not quality as a way of
getting people out of perfectionist habits. These
principles formed the basis of her workshop with the
Beckmans students. She wanted to encourage them
to produce a large amount of spontaneous artwork
and then turn it into designs. Laurie stood in the
middle of the room and shouted out, Tree! Bicycle!
Park! while the students scribbled away. The
students sketched without thinking, and without
knowing the drawings would ever be seen outside
the room! Product developer Emma Jones announced
at the end of the rst day that IKEA would be
involved and wanted to turn the designs into a range
of fabrics. Its a completely new way of working,
she said. That was actually what was really fun
to create something from a starting point that

Founded in 1939 by Anders Beckman, a Swedish
advertising illustrator and exhibition designer,
Beckmans has a reputation for its innovative
education, which pushes students to be creative.
To ensure students represent the freshest talent,
they are admitted purely on the basis of creative

I grew up in a commune
where we had shared living
areas, but our own sleeping
quarters. It taught me to
value the space that was mine
and make the most of it,
however small, says interiors
stylist, mother, art student and
wallpaper-shop-owner Mette
Helena Rasmussen. That
experience has been useful in
helping me make this space work
for me and Villa Malou. But
sometimes its just a matter of
learning from something that
doesnt work! I used to have a
round dining table I had read
that you can always nd room for
one more around a round table.
Its not true! A table like that
needs space, so it didnt work
here. Now I have an extendable
table from a ea market. I love
giving new uses to old things.
I have lots of furniture from
markets, but I also have lots of
IKEA and the odd designer piece.
I think its best all mixed up! You
have to look at your home and
nd the best solutions for your
space and the way you live in it
you cant copy and paste every
nice idea you see into it.

Bring the outdoors in
Meet the expert
Traudl has worked at IKEA for
32 years and is currently their
plant person. One of my
favourite things about my job
is that I work with a range
that brings nature into homes
and ofces. Most people have
a story to tell about their
plants at home. Even if you
dont have green ngers,
you shouldnt let that put you
off. Its all about choosing the
right plant for sunny or shady
areas. Many foliage plants
climbers, bonsai, yucca and
pachira dont need watering
very often and succulents
are hardy. Knowing when to
re-pot your plants, and having
the right tools, also helps.
My plants have to be strong
enough to survive a week
without water as I travel a
lot, says Traudl. Ask yourself
how much time you want to
spend caring for your plants,
and where in the room you
want to put them. Succulents
and cacti do not need a lot of
water and can survive even in
a very sunny window.
3. lIVIng CUrTAIn
Plants lter light and dust, and work
really well in a window as they help
reduce outside noise pollution, says
Traudl. For plants that cant stand
direct sunlight, make sure the window
is north- or east-facing. Play with
scale and levels to hide an ugly view.

Our bright, white at in Bergen is sometimes home to just two,
sometimes to eight, says Siw Haveland, an IKEA interior design
manager and award-winning blogger.
She shares her home with her anc Roger and depending on whos
around her daughter Betina (21), son Adrian Olai (19) and Rogers
brood, Tom-Erik (25), Kristiane (21), Rupert (19) and Adrian Johannes
(17). Roger and I both have children from previous relationships.
When we started dating, wed alternate between weekends where it
was just the two of us, a new couple getting to know each other, and
weekends spent with all six kids together at my place or Rogers. It was
Betina who nally said, Enough! Lets all be in one place! because
they were sick of moving their stuff from pillar to post. So we started
renting this at and, because all the kids have other places that they
call home, this became The Apartment. This was only supposed to be
a temporary home, with the kids sharing two bedrooms one for the
girls, one for the boys while we built the modern house Ive designed
to accommodate the whole family. Five years later and were only just
about to move! Here, weve had to learn to be exible with our space
and how we personalise it without spending too much money or doing
anything too permanent. This was our rst home together its taught
us how to merge our families, our values and our needs.
In their main, white living room,
the family previously had a white
leather sofa. It was easy to wipe
clean, says Siw. But it was so cold
to sit on! Now we love to cosy up
on our new fabric sofa.

Unify, dont zone. Im not keen on marking
out zones with different types of furniture,
style or colour. Instead, the room should work
as a whole, while meeting a variety of
requirements. We can do lots of different
things in the living room watch TV, relax, eat,
read it still feels unied in colour and style.

Space vs. storage. Yes, storage creates
space, but it also takes it up. We didnt want
to cram our home with storage, with lots of
things on the walls or taking up oor space.
So we pared right back and now just have
exactly what we need eight plates, eight
cups, eight glasses

Rethink, repurpose. Consider functions
beyond the product designers intention.
I made a simple dressing table out of a slim,
white-gloss IKEA laptop desk. Resting a mirror
on it and adding small white knobs on the
drawer fronts makes it a little more feminine.

Remember: inspiration comes from
interests. Roger hadnt realised that his
home could reect his passion for 1960s Bond
lms or that you could sit a vintage radio
beside a sleek black leather sofa. Now he does!

Mix, but dont match. Mixing gives your
home its style, and co-ordinating rather
than matching is what helps it to make sense.
My sofa cushions are covered in various fabrics,
but keeping them in similar shades gives a
unied look.

Dont forget a touch of humour! Our birds

Modern classic style nods to luxury but is also relaxed.
Its a balance I tried to strike with the DAGNY range.
Inspiration came from watercolours Id painted of wild
Swedish plants and thistles (pictured far right) their
lilac and beige tones were a perfect starting point. I also

The sound of my mother
working on the sewing
machine is one of the rst
things I remember. Now when
Im at home, I sometimes Skype
her as she works - I like the way

India is a country of dizzying contrasts. Its largest
cities boast ourishing commercial districts, modern
medical centres and all the technology of the new
millennium progress that is centuries ahead of
much of its countryside. In Uttar Pradesh, Indias
most populous state with 199.6 million inhabitants,
more than 59 million people including Sheila and
her family live below the poverty line. In such
rural areas, where ancient cultural customs and
traditional caste discrimination remain, severe
economic and social challenges are compounded
for women and girls.
fIrStStepStochange
Growing up, Sheila was fed only leftovers while her
brothers enjoyed three meals a day. While her
brothers went to school, Sheila was kept at home.
At 15 she was married, with her family paying a
hefty dowry to her husband (long-ago outlawed,
dowries are still routinely demanded). Her life was
typical for girls like her, so Sheila accepted her lot
until she joined her local Self Help Group.
That small step opened all kinds of doors for
Sheila, and also opened her mind. Self Help Groups
support women in everything from basic reading
and personal development, to nancial literacy,
banking and business skills, as well as networking,
legal rights and politics. Sheilas group has taught
her a lot about nutrition and education. I know
now I need to ensure my daughter is well-fed and
goes to school.
SHGs support women of all ages. Bhabna is 60.
When she joined the Self Help Group, she learned
about rights shed never heard of and government
programmes she was entitled to. I had no idea that
we can ask for information as a right. Or that the
government guarantees 100 days work. Now we all
have job cards and have got work to do.
cauSeandeffect
Self Help Groups began over a decade ago, growing
out of a move to address the root causes of child
labour through a partnership between IKEA and
UNICEF. SHGs rst reached out to 22,000 women in
500 villages in Uttar Pradesh, then evolved into a
pilot project with partner UNDP (the United Nations
Development Programme), with an aim to connect
with 50,000 women in these same villages.
A recently renewed commitment from the IKEA
Foundation is expanding this work to empower
2.2 million women in 16,000 villages across four
states in India by the year 2015.
Self Help Groups give women a chance to learn,
earn, and nd their voice. Two-thirds of people in
India have no access to banks, but Self Help Groups
encourage women to save money together and then
help them loan it to one another in emergencies, or
to start a business. The condence a woman gets
from chatting to others in her SHG can encourage
her to borrow the money to buy a cow. Next thing,
she is selling milk, repaying her debt, learning how
the dairy industry works. Her world is expanding.
Meera, now a dairy entrepreneur and elected
General Secretary of a Federation of 154 SHGs,
marvels at how her life has changed. Before, I never
went out of my village. Now I travel to the bank and
to other villages, and am preparing to be a
responsible member of the board.
Among other things, this Federation serves as
a base for a shareholding company to expand
dairy-industry employment to 12,000 more women,
and to cut out the middlemen so women can nally
earn a fair prot.
Above all, enabling women to earn a living directly
reduces child labour because when a mother has a
regular income, her children are free to go to school,
instead of having to go to work to help feed their
family. Empowering women sets off a chain reaction
of good things change for the better that increases
with each generation.

Like ripples in a stream, every step forward for
women reverberates through families and
communities. Researchers call it The Multiplier
Effect. Studies show that women with an education
tend to marry later and choose to have fewer
children, who in turn are healthier, better educated
and able to provide for their own families. The cycle
of poverty is broken.

As women become educated and economically
empowered, and their community awareness and action
increases, they have a positive impact on society at large.
Women in public, decision-making positions have a proven
track record of focusing on delivering basic services and
other fundamental issues vital to families.

This is the reason why SHG voter-awareness campaigns
reached out to 200,000 people before recent elections.
Twenty thousand women attended SHG training sessions
on joining the political process. Rajkali was one of them:
I will ght at any cost to make this village a better place
to live. A year ago, this 45-year-old mother of six from
Mirzapur never dreamed a woman could be elected
representative, but her SHG election training inspired her
to run. It was the same for Sunita, a mother of three who
never had a chance to get an education. When she was
elected to represent her block of villages, she even
surprised herself. I never thought I had the money or
muscle power to contest elections, but my SHG members
placed their trust in me and collectively we were able to
ensure that issues took precedence.
Both Rajkali and Sunitas platforms focused on basic level
village development issues that are close to their hearts
the kind of concerns they talk about at SHGs all the
time: childrens rights, improved housing, increased public
water, sanitation facilities, income opportunities for women
and better local schools.
Learning to campaign by getting out on the street to meet
and greet voters was pivotal, according to Israji, who won
her seat representing Sapahi village in Jaunpur. Through
these community/candidate interactions, I was able to
share my knowledge and implementation plans, which
otherwise I would never have had the opportunity to do.
looKIngtothefuture
A look at the numbers shows what an impact women are
having. In 2005, only ve women from the project area
ran for election none of them won. By 2010, nearly
700 women stood for ofce and 278 were elected to
represent their communities for the next ve years.
With each success, its clear theres still work to do, not
only for women and girls, but also helping men and boys
reach a new level of understanding. I had to work hard to
sensitise my husband and male relatives, Rajkali admits,
but now she has her husbands support.
Even women who dont run for ofce are beneting.
Offering a glimpse of her growing political awareness,
Sheila now states: Women too can have a say in village
matters. During the elections, 282 Womens vigilance
Committees helped monitor the polls, while a registration
campaign encouraged participation among people from
marginalised communities. Early data from just a few
villages demonstrated a 100 percent increase in registered
voters. One of those villages was Sheilas.

When Maria and Quico told me of their plan
to buy this hillside plot, I said, Dont! The
land is so sloped it didnt seem suitable for
construction at least not using conventional
techniques. They bought it anyway it was
cheap and the best way they could see to
give their family a life based in nature. The
build took seven months. Our main concerns
were budget and the environment. How could
we build a low-cost house that ts this space
physically and environmentally and satises
the family emotionally? The house is made of
sustainably sourced Austrian wood. We wasted
very little, using off-cuts from the exterior to
build parts of the interior. The result is a timber
box oating in nature. Its dimensions are small
but weve made the most of it. Importantly for
Maria and Quico, the design is functional and
not for show. I love the idea that design
doesnt dictate their way of life.
We built this house with sustainable
wood in a way that allows it to be taken
apart and almost everything recycled.
When its dismantled, all that will
remain is the landscape

Maria and Quicos wood-panelled
family home measures 16x4.5m and
is located in the hills of Vacarisses,
45 minutes from Barcelona. It was
rst built in a factory and then put in
place by a crane to avoid disrupting
the landscape. Its doors and windows
are positioned to bring the outside in.
Our house is for us its not a show home but
a very lived-in, cosy family home. We are so
grateful for the help Roger gave us in building
this house with little money, but along the way
there were a few disputes. On one occasion my
husband Quico and Roger couldnt agree on a
design decision. To help us see his point, Roger
emailed us a scan of his rough sketch for the
house. It helped to settle the disagreement and
remind us of whats important. Quico printed
the sketch, added an inscription and framed it.
It reads: The most important thing about this
house is the family that lives in it. It hangs in
our living room. We dont want a space that is
more about style than function. Things have to
be designed for ease and practicality so we can
spend more time living in our home than
preening it. Its part of the ve simple
principles that make our life in the hills work.

This house is architecturally
beautiful another family may
have lled the linear interior with
sleek furniture. We want a cosy
home, so we furnished our rooms
with budget and comfort in mind.
The three rooms on the ground
oor are small with sliding doors
to save space. Theyre designed
to work as both individual rooms
and connected spaces, but we
rarely close doors in this house.
We love being connected and
planned our living room around
the idea that we can all be happy
in one space, even while doing
different things. I love to read in
my white chair by the window,
where light streams in. The kids
play at the coffee table the rug
is softer on their knees than the
oor. Quico is often at the cabinet
thats lled with his camera
collection. We all love the sofa.
We picked it as its big enough for
four with room to spare!

#1 PUT fAMILy fIRST
We used to live in Terrassa, a village with a population of 200,000.
Our apartment there was small and ordinary. One summer we went
on a mountain holiday with friends we camped, walked and
enjoyed being outside. When we returned to Terrassa, we realised
we didnt like city-living anymore! Quico and I spent a long time
talking about whether we should give up our apartment and move
to the country. In the end, the positive effect being in nature had on
us as a family helped us decide. Here in Vacarisses the children are
happy to be surrounded by nature, from the wood of our home to
the green of the countryside. And the balance of nature has helped
Quico and I nd a more balanced approach to life at home.

#3 EAT LOCALLy
Quico loves to cook. With simple
meals like tortilla we take turns,
but if it requires more work,
Quico takes over! Its important
to us to eat healthily fresh
vegetables, fruit. Every Saturday
we go to the village together to
buy food. Its a good way to show
the kids the value of what we eat.
We try not to consume too much
and with fresh local food, there is
minimal packaging. Still, we
recycle everything glass, plastic,
paper. It all helps.

Our kitchen is an extra living room!
says Maria. To get the most out of the
narrow space, the kitchen has a galley
design with base units running along
one wall and a shelf to display photos
and store regularly used ingredients.
We have lots of work space to prepare
food and room for a dining table.

#4 CONSUME WITH CARE, AVOID WASTE
Our bookcase is made with off-cuts from the timber panels used to
construct this house. Before Roger built the house we told him we had a
huge library. This is his clever solution it saves space because it forms
the wall between our ofce and the stairwell. We love this bookcase for
its beautiful and functional combination of two things that are important
to us our books and using the things nature gives us carefully. On our
rst night in this house Quico and I sat on our bed and stared out at the
night sky. Among nature, away from the lights of the city, we could see
the moon and stars so clearly. It was amazing. Now, in our small way,
we try to make daily decisions that help preserve that beauty.

The familys bookcase reaches from

stairwell. Its open, so even though
the space is divided, we feel
connected, says Maria. The childrens
books are kept within their reach,
while an unused space at the bottom
of the stairs is brought to life with a
chalkboard where Maria and Quico
write daily messages for the children
when they come downstairs.
#5 kNOW WHAT
TO gIVE AND TAkE
We had two options for the design
upstairs: bigger bedrooms and a
narrow hall, or small bedrooms
leading off a hallway that would
be spacious enough to be used as
an extra room. We chose the
latter because it gives us a space
that can grow with the children.

lots of oor space, Pols drum kit
which he can play without
disturbing anyone downstairs
a bookcase to store toys and a
double desk where Pol can draw
and Carla can do her homework.
We value this space because it
gives the children the freedom to
play together. Even when Quico
and I have a siesta, we can slide
our bedroom door shut and feel
Ok that the children are safe and
playing in the hall. When they get
older, well change the hall into an
ofce space for them.

'THIS IS THE FIRST TIME
I'VE SEEN THE STORE'S
ROOF COVERED IN SOLAR
PANELS,' says Stefano Brown,
Sustainability Manager in Retail.
Its so rewarding to see them
because Ive been involved in
the Catania store project from
the very beginning.
Weve covered as much of the
roof as possible, and there are
1,200 more panels in the car
park. In summer, temperatures
can reach 50 degrees, so the
panels dont just create energy,
they provide shade for cars too!
There are two main solar
technologies - one produces
heat, the other converts solar
radiation into electricity. The
latter is called photovoltaics (PV)
and is what we have in Catania.
GOING GLOBAL
So far, IKEA has invested 33.5
million euros in PV technology
in Italy and aims to install solar
panels on the roofs of every
store in the country - a goal that
shows how committed we are to
going renewable. This initiative
will provide enough renewable
energy to light all shop foors in
Italy, and will cut CO
2
emissions
by 4,050 tons per year!
But this isnt just a project for
Italy. In the next two to three
years well have installed solar
panels on the roofs of 130 to
150 locations in North America,
Germany, Belgium, Switzerland,
Spain, France and the UK. IKEA
isnt the only retailer using this
kind of energy, but were doing it
on a huge scale.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The switch to renewable energy
is something we are very
committed to, but hrst we have
to think of ways we can save
energy. We also have to think of
how to build new stores so they
are more energy efhcient from
the very beginning. We want to
consume and disperse as little
energy as we can to keep the
carbon footprint of each new
store as small as possible.
On top of this, we have the
responsibility of encouraging
customers to reduce their
footprints. Were entering the
next generation of LED lights.
We sold 150 million traditional
low-energy bulbs in the last few
years, and if we sell the same
number of LEDs, the impact on
the environment will be huge. A
single light bulb might not make
much difference, but multiplied
by 150 million, it does!
THE BEST ECO IDEAS WORK WITH WHAT
NATURE GIVES US - thats why Im excited about
the steps IKEA is taking towards using renewable
energy in its stores. See the amazing difference
thats already been made by installing solar panels
on the roof of the store in Catania, Sicily.

THE FUTURE'S GREENER
'In our view, its not optional to produce sustainable
products, its a priority. We want to reduce waste by
taking products at the end of their life and making
them into something new. We also have to hnd a
way to produce all the energy we need, and make
all products from renewable materials. Our intent is to go 100%
renewable, and we are moving towards this goal quickly. The Catania
store is a step in the right direction, but its just the start. This isnt a
competition, its about environmental concerns, but if every company
did as we are doing, there would be an energy revolution.

Im proud of our success and I hope
that we have such good results that
others will copy us all over the world. How
amazing would that be?
5 WAYS WE PROTECT THE
ENVIRONMENT IN STORE
1. Solar power. We now produce 20% of
our own electricity.
2. Light bulbs. We have energy-efhcient
lighting solutions all over the store.
3. Rainwater. We collect it in a water tank
that is 150m

. We use the water for the
toilets and for gardening.
4. Recycling. We have a recycling centre
at the store, where everything from iron
to cardboard gets sorted and recycled.
5. Customers. Half a million people visited
the store last month - thats a lot of
people to share our eco message with.
