During the war, Americans had everyday responsibilities to tend to. They had civilian defense committees, recycled old newspapers and scrap metals, and served on rationing and draft boards. Although Americans had responsibilities, the country itself was prospering. Defense spending ended the Great Depression and unemployment had vanished. Lots of wartime factories were built to make everyday supplies for the war. These large factories provided many people with jobs that they wouldnt have had in other times. Also since our large increase in employment, we had a larger GDP. More items were being produced in the country at the time. Many people reported that there was not any real sacrifice or loss of items. They thought the war was fun. Although large factories were in abundance, their was a significant shortage on consumer goods. Almost everything was rationed and/or regulated to help preserve the amount of supplies. Since Japan captured Malaysia and Dutch, 97 percent of Americas natural rubber was cut off. Another thing that changed during the war was the shortened school and work hours because of fuel oil being rationed. A nationwide speed limit of 35 mph was imposed, which reduced highway deaths dramatically.

Families followed husbands who enlisted in war time efforts and Civilians followed high paying defense jobs. New residents moved to California to follow the high paying defense jobs. Population practically grew overnight. African Americans moved from the rural south to the north as a continuation of the Great Migration. Blacks and whites competed for jobs and housing causing racial conflict to break out. In the West, male Hispanic teenagers formed pachuco gangs. They dressed in zoot suits and caused mayhem in the cities.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, many Americans started to panic which drove the detainment of U.S. citizens of Japanese ancestry. This wide spread panic caused president Roosevelt to issue Executive Order 9066 which gave the War Department the authority to evacuate Japanese Americns from the West Coast and intern them into relocation camps for the rest of the war. Army officials only gave families a few days to dispose of their possessions which cause Japanese businesses to be liquidated overnight and their houses to sell for a fraction of their actual price. The Japansese in Hawaii were not detained because they made up a third of their population and the Hawiaan economy could not function without them.

The use of atomic bombs was used because the U.S belivced that Japan would not relent in their war unless all theur men was killed and their country was devastated. The use of the weapon was controversial because the weapon itself could cause great harm to the citizens and damage to the city. I think the atomic bomb should have been used because without it, the Japanese would have continued fighting and taking many of other lives in its wake. They would not have cared who died or other costs as long as they believed that they had supreme power. 6. The two major issued that caused tension among the allies was the fates of the British and French colonial empires and the nations of eastern and central Europe. An independence movement led by Ghandi gathered strength and caused stress between Roosevelt who favored Indian Independence. He also favored Churchhill, who was intent on preserving British rule. Another conflict was Stalins insistence that Russian national security demanded the creation of pro-Soviet governments in central and eastern Europe. A new United Nations was created with a security council. It included the United States, Britain, France, China, and the Soviet Union.
