"Every PANGILINAN is related. The difference is only in their degree of relation ('Mikakamag-anak la ngan ding PANGILINAN. Ati mu kng laut ning pilatan ing e ra pamikikilala.')." PANGILINAN, from Kapampangan 'pangilin' which means 'abstinence', 'to sanctify' or 'to free from human pollution'. Pangilinan therefore means "He who is not to be touched by human hands or seen by the human eye". According to tradition, the PANGILINAN were related to the priestly clan () from Satsuma () in Southern Japan, notably the Imibe () clan. They settled in the Betis Region (Pampanga) of the Luzon Empire () before the coming of the Spaniards. Another tradition states that they were originally from Luzon who settled in Chaozhou () in Southern China and then returned to Betis during the Spanish era. Further research is needed to shed more light into these family traditions. In Kapampangan folklore, the ancient rulers known as Panginuan ('those who are worshipped') or Anakbanua (Children of Heaven) were once classified as Pamintuan ('those who are to be obeyed') and Pangilinan ('those who are kept sacred'). The Pamintuan served as the military rulers while the PANGILINAN served as the spiritual rulers. In Kapampangan History, the Pamintuan Clan have distinguished themselves as military leaders during the Spanish era, while the PANGILINAN served as priests, teachers or doctors. The PANGILINAN were recorded as the traditional rulers of the Paglalabuan River (now Sta. Ursula) in Betis according to the official history of the municipality of Guagua. This river is the major crossroads between Guagua, Minalin and Macabebe, which explains the presence of well established PANGILINAN branches in those towns. They excelled as boat makers, priests, teachers, doctors, and lawyers. Moving further upstream to Apalit, Bacolor, Candaba, Mexico and Sto. Tomas, the PANGILINAN have become one of the most established clans all over the Province of Pampanga. Having their roots in the Province of Pampanga, the PANGILINAN are one of the most prolific and successful clans in the country, spreading their branches across the archipelago and the entire globe. produced outstanding members of society which include Philippine Senator Kiko (Francis) Pangilinan and Asian Business Tycoon MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan). The PANGILINAN surname appear as early as 1605 in Philippine history (Luciano Santiago, Kapampangan Pioneers, 2001): - 1600s. Don Thomas Pangilinan who established a capellana (pious trust fund) in Bacolor in 1605. - Jesus Pangilinan, recorded as one of the first residents of Minalin in 1650. - 1700s. Don Nicolas Pangilinan, mayor of Minalin in 1757. followed by Don Andres Pangilinan in 1758, by Don Marcos Pangilinan in 1760, by Don Juan Pangilinan in 1784 and by Don Jose Pangilinan in 1794. - Bachiller Don Miguel Pangilinan (1755-1820) of Minalin, a native priest and son of Don Nicholas Pangiliinan, was propriety parish priest of Calapan in Mindoro for 15 years, Apalit for 7 years, and Mexico for 12 years. - 1800s. Don Macario Pangilinan (1800-1850) of Betis, first native translator of the Via Crucis. - Don Mariano Pangilinan, gobernadorcillo of Betis in 1893, known to be a morally upright man, a song was written about on how he reprimanded the youth against "pamagpusitara" (elopment). - Don Martin Pangilinan of Betis, renowned school teacher from 1893 1898.

The PANGILINAN are now a tribe of their own and a force to reckon with. It is about time that we unite every member of the clan and create an international PANGILINAN CLAN ASSOCIATION (Sapni ding Pangilinan).
