August 28, 2011 _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ Sir/Madam: The Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines-Iloilo Chapter (MTAP-IC), Inc. will hold the 2nd Regional Inter-tertiary Mathematics Quiz on October 28, 2011, 8:00 AM-12 NN at Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iznart Street, Iloilo City. In this regard, we would like to invite your students to come and join the said contest. We would appreciate if you could send at most three contestants to represent your school. A registration fee of four hundred pesos (Php400.00) will be collected from each contestant to cover snack, certificate, and prizes. The 2nd Regional Inter-tertiary Mathematics Quiz Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iznart Street, Iloilo City October 28, 2011 8:00 AM-12 NN RULES AND REGULATIONS A. CONTESTANTS 1. Each school could have a maximum of three (3) contestants. 2. Contestants should be bonafide students of the college/university they are representing. 3. The contestants from each college/university may either be a male or female from first year to fifth year college. 4. Contestants must be 16-22 years old only. 5. Only one (1) coach is allowed for each participating college/university. The coach will automatically join the Regional Convention and will pay a registration fee of two thousand six hundred pesos (Php2,600.00) for the two-day convention. The coach can avail of the Php200 discount if he/she can pay on or before October 3, 2011. If the coach is an MTAP-IC member for calendar year 2011, he/she can avail of another Php200 discount. B. COVERAGE OF THE QUIZ The questions included in the quiz will cover topics on 1. Algebra 2. Trigonometry 3. Geometry 4. Calculus 5. Elementary Statistics C. QUESTIONS 1. There will be ten (10) questions for each round, to wit: easy, average, and difficult with 3, 5, and 7 points, respectively. 2. Questions may be in a form of multiple-choice, fill-in the blanks, or problem solving. 3. The quiz master will read each question twice. 4. Each question will be projected on the wide screen with an indicated time clock. 5. After the time limit, a buzzer will sound. Contestants should stop writing and they should show their answers by raising their flash cards. D. TIE BREAK 1. In case of tie, a tie-breaker question will be given. 2. The contestant who can give the correct answer first will be declared the winner. E. OBJECTIONS 1. The duly registered coach or participants are the only persons authorized to make a protest. 2. All protests should be referred to the board of judges immediately before the quiz master reads the next question. 3. The decision of the judges regarding the objection is final.

F. PRIZES 1. The three (3) contestants with the highest accumulated scores from the three (3) rounds will be declared champion, 1st runner-up, and 2nd runner-up, respectively. Each of them will receive cash prize, certificate of recognition, trophy, and medal. 2. Cash prizes of Php 5 000, Php 3 500, and Php 2 000 will be awarded to the champion, second placer, and third placer, respectively. The 4th, 5th, and 6th placers will receive consolation prize of Php500 each. 2. Certificate of participation will be given to each participating college/university, coach, and contestant. G. TIME/PROGRAM OUTLINE 1. The time for registration and the time to start the quiz will be strictly followed as indicated in the programme. A CALL FOR PAPERS Revolutionizing Mathematics Education The Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines-Iloilo Chapter invites you to its 3rd Annual Regional Convention which will be held on October 28 and 29, 2011 at the Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iznart Street, Iloilo City. The theme for this years convention is Revolutionizing Mathematics Education. The Regional Convention is fully endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education-Region VI as well as the Department of Education-Region VI and will feature plenary talks, parallel sessions and presentations of papers of educators who have been doing research in mathematics teaching and learning. The sessions are designed to: 1. update mathematics educators on innovations and trends in teaching mathematics; and 2. create a venue for sharing effective mathematics teaching practices, materials, and methods. We are now accepting paper presentation proposals in the form of abstracts for the conference. Abstracts should have at most 300 words and must clearly state the problem being addressed, methodology, results, and implications. The heading should include the title of the paper, name of researcher(s), institution, postal address, email address, and contact number(s) of the author. Papers on teaching innovations, transformative teaching, instructional technology, and novel teaching strategies in mathematics are highly encouraged. Mathematics investigations are also accepted. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is on September 30, 2011. Proponents of accepted papers shall be notified on or before October 14, 2011. Soft copies of the extended abstract must be received no later than October 28, 2011. The extended abstract must be single-spaced, typed in 12-pt Times New Roman font, must not exceed 8 pages, and is in accordance with the American Psychological Association (APA) style of writing manuscripts. It must contain the rationale, statement of the problem, methodology, results and conclusions, and references. Deadlines will be strictly followed. Please send your abstract to: Dr. Alona M.
