INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS SINCE 1919 IR-502 Course Overview The year 1919 marks a watershed in human history.

The worlds first world war that had erupted in 1914 with the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand, thereafter engulfing a large part of the world, came to an end resulting in the deaths of millions of people. The same year the first chair of International relations was established at the University of Wales with the purpose of understanding inter-state relations and prevention of future wars. The Paris Peace Conference, a series of treaties that brought the war to an end and reshaped the map of the world was also concluded the same year. The victorious powers shaped the world according to their wishes. The First World War and the unfair terms and conditions of the subsequent postwar peace arrangements paved the path for the emergence of such extreme ideologies as Nazism and Fascism, and ultimately set in motion a course of events that not only culminated in the outbreak of the Second World War but also shaped the current international political order. The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with events that have shaped the course of international relations since 1919. This course will follow a chronological timeline. The course will begin with an overview of the world at the turn of the twentieth century, followed by an examination of the underlying causes of the First World War and its impact on world history. The Interwar years 1919-1939 will be followed an assessment of the Second World War, its causes and consequences. The second part of this course will focus on the events since 1945, with particular emphasis on the Cold War rivalry between the two superpowers, Arab Israeli Conflict, the end of Cold War, and the Post Cold War international order. Lest this course comes across as too Europe-centric, the histories of Asia, Africa and Latin America will also be examined. Course Readings
