Riding the Rails in Baden-Wrttemberg

By Birgit Thompson USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs Office ne of the convenient aspects of living in Stuttgart is the public transportation system. The regional train system and its suburban railway system or S-Bahn tracks span from Bietigheim to Echterdingen and from Schorndorf to Herrenberg. It is easy to maneuver around the city and outlying suburbs without a car. The bus system, which complements the SBahn system, and reaches even farther into the smaller farming communities. The VVS (Stuttgart transportation network) prides itself on being a reliable, easy to use public transportation system that lets travelers get from point A to point B without much fuss. The DB (Deutsche Bundesbahn) on the other hand, offers a ticket that can take visitors throughout Baden-Wrttemberg. The BW ticket is an effective, economical way to get around for one day. For 29, up to five travelers can use it on an unlimited amount of train routes and subways within Baden-Wrttemberg on the day of the purchase (weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. the next day and on weekends, midnight to 3 a.m. the next day). The ticket is valid on all local trains (Interregio-Express, Regional-Express, Regionalbahn, S-Bahn) and the entire transport system of the Verkehrsverbnde (public transportation systems). The BW tickets will take travellers as far as Wrzburg and Basel.

The Deutsche Bundesbahn Intercity-Express or ICE, reaches travel speeds up to 186 mph. Travelers can explore the Black Forest, the Rhine River Falls, Lake Constance, the Swabian Alb and the royal residence in Wrzburg all on one ticket, within the time frame specified. In some states, you can buy a supplement ticket for 13 to be able to take Inter Regionalor express-trains. Prices, terms and conditions may vary from state to state. Another added bonus is that the ticket offers some discounts at various locations. Sea Life in Konstanz offers a 30 percent discount on its entrance fee; save 1 off the entrance fee at the at the Heidelberg castle ruins, and at the Residence Wrzburg, or enjoy a five CHF (Swiss francs) discount at the Basel Zoo. Many discounts are available and are listed in an English brochure at the Bahnhof information booth. Travelers can get tickets at any ticket counter or ticket machine at any local Bahnhof, or order them online at www.bahn.de/international/view/en/prices/germany/laender_tickets.shtml.
