FELLOWS IN THE NEWS Magsaysay Awards Announced Each year six people or organizations are named joint winners of the prestigious Magsaysay award and this year two of them are Ashoka Fellows, Tri Mumpuni and Harish Hande. Indonesian social worker Tri Mumpuni was recognized because her IBEKA foundation built 60 small power plants harnessing the energy of water stored in dams to bring electricity to half a million people. Indian engineer Harish Hands Solar Electric Light Co. has tapped the suns energy to light up 120,000 households and is now one of the countrys largest solar technology producers. AWARDS Manthan Award 2011 Deadline: sometime in September The Manthan Award is a unique award which recognizes the best practices using ICT tools in all sectors like business, health, agriculture, entertainment, culture, governance, and rural development. EdelGive Social Innovation Honours Deadline: September 23, 2011 This is a national awards program to reward innovative work in the social sector in India. GFW works to strengthen womens groups based outside the United States by providing small, flexible, and timely grants ranging from $500 to $20,000 for operating and project expenses. The Global Fund supports organizations that demonstrate a commitment to women's equality and female human rights.
