GREETINGS FROM THE CHAPTER REGENT

The events of September 11, 2001 had a profound effect on the United States and those events continue to resonate today. The attack on that morning touched the lives of, not only Americans, but also people in 92 other countries who lost citizens that day. This September 11th, we will pause to remember that 10 years has passed since that fateful day. An horrific time in our countys history and our personal history, as well. The unthinkable happened, and we all stood witness. Please take time on September 11th to remember those who bravely paid the highest price to protect the freedoms of the United States. Each of us should display the American flag outside our home, apartment, or place of business. We do this in honor of those who lost their lives that day; and we do this to honor their families, friends and loved ones who continue to keep their memory alive. Keep your flag flying to show your appreciation to those who are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms. During the coming year, at each chapter meeting, we will have a member of our chapter share their memories of that day and observe one minute of silence in remembrance of those we lost and the sacrifice they were called to make on September 11, 2001. The chapters new DAR 9/11 flag will be posted to represent our ongoing commitment to never forget. Let us remember, we have inherited the responsibility of protecting the efforts of the American Revolution. In DAR Friendship, Peggy Strelinger Chapter Regent St. Louis-Jefferson Chapter

DAR OUTSTANDING TEACHER OF AMERICAN HISTORY

We are the keepers of history. We are also the lovers of history! For many of us, our love of history and our ancestral background was fostered by a great History teacher. This is one of the reasons DAR sponsors an Outstanding Teacher of American History contest. This contest honors notable, fulltime teachers of American history and related fields (eg. social studies, government, citizenship education). They must teach in a private, public or parochial school, grade 6-12. A chapter selects and honors its own Outstanding Teacher of American History in their

community. (Check with your local teachers organization, as well as students you know!) The chapters winner is submitted to the State Historian, for selection at the state level. The winner is honored at the State Conference and is sponsored by the state at the national level. The national Outstanding Teacher is honored at Continental Congress in June. Please let our Chapter Historian, Gail Grich, know of any teachers you know who are deserving of this recognition. Gail can be reached at 314-644-0301 or ga_grich@sbcglobal.net.

CHAPTER MEMBERS ATTEND DAR VOLUNTEER GENEALOGY WORKSHOP

Chapter Regent, Peggy Strelinger and Chapter First Vice Regent, Ann Babington, attended the DAR Volunteer Genealogy Workshop held in Kansas City, August 16 - 17. The workshop was sponsored by the MSDAR and was presented by two staff members from the NSDAR Headquarters in Washington, D.C. During the two-day workshop, attendees were familiarized with how to complete the DAR Membership application and many of the particular details looked for by the genealogists who review the applications. Peggy and Ann each received a certificate of completion and are now able to assist others in completing their applications for membership. They are very interested in sharing the knowledge they received with other chapter members so that even more prospective DAR members can be assisted in the application process. If you would be interested in this opportunity please contact either Peggy at 314-918-8202 or mbstrelinger@gmail.com or Ann at 314-991-4876 or zeldabab@sbcglobal.net.
