THREAT
In show business it is the rare performer who is an exceptional singer, dancer and actor. Chile is the vinous equivalent. While most wine regions have one, or perhaps two specialties Chiles winemaking reputation is built on the strength of its three superstar varieties: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carmenre, its signature grape. Comfortable in the spotlight, the three Cs of Chile continue to captivate admirers everywhere.

THE TRIPLE THREAT.

CHARDONNAY
Tempered by the cooling influences of the Pacific Ocean, both the Casablanca and Leyda Valleys are crafting topquality Chardonnay in a fresh, brightly fruity style. Their latitudes ensure plenty of sunshine and a lengthy growing season, making for vividly fruity wines that are well balanced by refreshing acidity. Winemakers are often judicious if using oak barrels, creating wines that balance fruit and oak characteristics.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
By far Chiles most planted and in-demand grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in the countrys dry, sunny central valleys. Chilean Cabernets bridge the styles of California and Bordeaux, with soft, fleshy versions that retain impressively subtle nuances of fruit flavour. The best examples have the muscle and stuffing to age and evolve.

a string of valleys running north-south between the coastal hills and the towering Andes Mountains. Much like the Sonoma and Napa Valleys in California, Chiles sunny coastal valleys enjoy the moderating effect of cool ocean breezes from the Pacific. The hotter central vineyards are tempered by glacial breezes coming down from the Andes. California and Chile also share similarly long growing seasons, which helps ensure perfect ripeness. Latitude is a less important factor in Chile than proximity to either the ocean or the mountains for determining wine styles.

CARMENRE
This once-forgotten grape has risen from obscurity to become Chiles signature variety. Carmenre was once widely planted in Bordeaux, but following the devastation of phylloxera in the 19th century, it was thought to be lost forever. In 1994, the grape was discovered to be alive and well in the vineyards of Chile (where it had previously been misidentified as Merlot), and a star was born again. Carmenre ripens even later than Cabernet Sauvignon, which in part accounts for its success in Chiles long, consistent growing season.

Winner of a Silver Medal at the Ontario Wine Awards 2009. TASTING NOTE: This expressive white blend needs time to come into its own, just like the previous 2006 Laura White did. The mix of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Riesling included lots that were fermented and aged in older oak barrels. CAVE SPRING MERLOT 2006 VQA Niagara Escarpment
TASTING NOTE: The 2006 vintage in Ontario was cool. At first, 06 wines made with Bordeaux grapes were a touch muted. Now, a year or two on, the wines are starting to make a big impression. Cave Springs Merlot is a prime example. Well-handled toasty oak surrounds an array of aromas, including black cherry, plum, vanilla and coffee bean, as well as a hint of minerality. On the palate, its dry with good fruit replays, and moderate tannins bring fine balance. Medium-bodied with a lingering finish. Try it tonight with rare roast beef. Year after year, this fabulous Ripasso is a major hit with VINTAGES customers. Its fruit-forward with layers of cranberry, cherry, herb, peppery spice and meaty notes. Dry with a medium full-body and a lingering finish, it has the structure to match flavourful dishes such as roast leg of lamb or gourmet pizza with the works. 650713 (D) 750 mL $ 17.95

VALPANTENA TORRE DEL FALASCO RIPASSO VALPOLICELLA 2006 DOC

The Cantina della Valpantena owes a great deal of its success to the work of Luca Degani, who has perfectly interpreted the magic moment Valpolicella is currently enjoying. The commitment of the member growers in the vineyards has been renewed, the cellar techniques perfected and, above all, the classic wine types have been interpreted in a contemporary key and promoted with effective marketing techniques. (Gambero Rosso Italian Wines 2008) TASTING NOTE: A simple, rustic, delicious, wine with mouth-watering red plums, cherries and berries. Full-bodied and smooth. Food matches: chipotle chili, spicy chicken, rib roast, fried chicken. Score 90. (Natalie MacLean, www.nataliemaclean.com, Nov. 22, 2008) 642421 (D) 750 mL $ 17.95

RENZO MASI CHIANTI RISERVA 2005 DOCG

This Chianti Riserva is a blend of 93% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, and 2% Colorino. Rufina ages it for 30 months in a combination of barrel and bottle. Canaiolo adds some acidity, while the Colorino (instead of the now-allowed Cabernet Sauvignon) is used by traditionalists who want to add tannic structure but keep the wine all Italian. Try this with classic Tuscan dishes, such as steak Florentine. 969469 (XD) 750 mL $ 15.95

TENUTA LUGO CHIANTI RISERVA 2004 DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2004 vintage was not as legendarily hot as 2003, but that was definitely to Tuscanys advantage. This pretty crowd-pleaser features aromas of sweet red fruits, plum and gentle earth/truffle notes. Dry, ripe and fruity, this ready-to-drink wine is an ideal partner for barbecued gourmet spicy sausages. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2008) 023275 (D) 750 mL $ 21.95

VILLALTA RIPASSO VALPOLICELLA 2006 DOC (Casa Girelli)

TASTING NOTE: This Ripasso makes an immediate impression with its deep colour and concentrated aromas (cherry, blackberry, smoked meat, plums and leather). On the palate, it is dry, fruity and well-structured with good length on the finish. A smashing choice for barbecued back ribs or grilled T-bone steak. (VINTAGES panel, June 2009) 117242 (XD) 750 mL $ 14.95

SPAIN WHITE WINE

BURGNS ALBARIO 2008 DO Ras Baixas (Bodegas Martin Cdax)
Albario is another variety in a long line of previously under-appreciated aromatic white grapes (e.g., Riesling, Chenin Blanc and Gewurztraminer) that is now beginning to get its long-deserved due. Its an exceptional match for a vast array of seafoods and paella, but also makes a refreshing summer sipper for lounging about on the backyard deck or patio. 945063 (XD) 750 mL $ 18.95

FONTAL ROBLE TEMPRANILLO 2007 DO La Mancha (Bodegas Fontana)

TASTING NOTE: From the hot La Mancha region comes this ripe and fruity Tempranillo, filled with aromas of plum, blackberry, black table grapes and spice cabinet. Dry with almost sweet fruits balanced by gentle acids. The fruit and spice mingle nicely, suggesting this wine is a good partner for mildly spiced Asian beef dishes. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2008) 127381 (D) 750 mL $ 13.95

CELLER PIOL NUESTRA SEORA PORTAL 2007 DO Terra Alta

Jay Miller of www.erobertparker.com gave this wine a score of 90 but did not provide a tasting note. (Feb. 2008) TASTING NOTE: Its an undemanding wine (blended from Garnatxa Blanca, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Macabeo), but by no means lacking in interest. Aromas are dominated by the Sauvignon Blanc in the blend, but tropical fruit flavors dance on the palate, and the wines texture has that subtle graininess often associated with Garnatxa (Grenache). Score 88. (Marguerite Thomas, www.winereviewonline.com, June 2, 2009) 114256 (D) 750 mL $ 15.95

LORION CRIANZA 2005 DOCa Rioja (Bodegas Bretn)

TASTING NOTE: Deep red. Cherry, plum and tobacco on the nose, with suave baking spices and tobacco adding complexity. Supple cherry and plum jam flavors are framed and lifted by juicy acidity. Finishes clean and moderately long, with a note of cherry skin. Score 88. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, July/Aug. 2008) 912691 (XD) 750 mL $ 15.95

1
TORRES SAN VALENTN GARNACHA 2007 DO Catalunya
TASTING NOTE: (Translated from the Norwegian) Dense and deep red-violet. Rich and full sweet scents of plums and dark berries with hints of spice. Full bodied with ripe and sweet fruit, moderate acidity and a medium long aftertaste with fine tannins. This wine is ready to drink now, but can be cellared for two to three years. Definitely a wine to have with meat, but its easy, sweet style means that the meat should be well seasoned ... Sweet fruit combined with fine tannins make this a wine you can also enjoy without food. Or try with well-aged cheeses, such as parmesan, Gruyre, cheddar, etc. (Arnie Stalheim, www.klikk.no, Jan. 22, 2009) 673541 (XD) 750 mL $ 13.95

SPAIN RED WINE

FINCA SOBREO CRIANZA 2005 DO Toro
TASTING NOTE: Finca Sobrenos 2005 Crianza is 100% Tinta de Toro [Tempranillo] aged for 7 months in American oak. Dark crimsoncolored, it offers an enticing bouquet of cedar, mineral, blackberry, and floral notes. This leads to a ripe, supple, full-flavored, spicy wine with excellent depth and balance. Although designed and priced to be consumed in its youth, it will evolve for several years. Score 90. (Jay Miller, www.erobertparker.com, Aug. 2008) 040360 (XD) 750 mL $ 18.95

In the Pipeline
August 29, 2009 Release FEATURES
Exploring the Rhne Valley Californian Zinfandel

VINTAGES is the fine wine and premium spirits business unit of the LCBO. Products featured in this catalogue may be obtained in two ways: 1. Shopping in person at a VINTAGES location on or after the Release date. Note: Supplies are limited and product availability will vary from store to store. Customers in the Toronto and Ottawa areas must shop in person. 2. Ordering specific VINTAGES products through your local LCBO or VINTAGES store. This is a service we provide for our customers who live outside the Toronto and Ottawa areas only. Important customers must submit their requests to their local LCBO store by 11 am the Tuesday before the Release date. VINTAGES allocates a percentage of products in each release to fulll customer requests. This does not guarantee availability as VINTAGES products are purchased in finite quantities and are sometimes extremely limited and/or in very high demand. Store staff can order as many bottles as you require subject to availability. NEW Transferring Products From Other Stores: VINTAGES customers may now ask for product including ISDs to be transferred between stores if stock is still available 2 weeks after the release date. Please contact your local LCBO store to make arrangements. VINTAGES catalogues are available online at www.vintages.com. Our website also features product search, special offers, events, store locations and other information. Lets Keep in Touch: If you wish to receive the VINTAGES catalogues at your home or ofce, please contact VINTAGES Sales Centre at 416-365-5767, or toll-free at 1-800-266-4764 or via email at vintages@lcbo.com to sign up for our mailing list. This is a free service and your privacy is assured. Help keep us up-to-date. If you are a subscriber and are moving, receiving a duplicate copy, or wish to unsubscribe, please update us by contacting VINTAGES Sales Centre by telephone at 416-365-5767 or toll-free at 1-800-266-4764; or via email vintages@lcbo.com.
