CURVE

STRAND SURFACE

Part #1 Assignment 2 For assignment 2 we will be focusing on Curves and how to draw and control different types of curves. We will be discussing and exploring the relationship between curves and surfaces. You will be learning the parts of a curve and surface space. The types of curves you will be exploring are free form curves, bezier curves, B-spline curves, NURBS curves and subdivision curves. This Assignment will require you to understand how to translate from Physical to digital and digital back to physical. By doing this you will fundamentally understand how to translate what might seem like a simple physical geometry to a digital geometry. You will be exploring a material system which is defined as a strategically manipulated fabric. The fabric allows for an arrangement of self organization into particular fold formations which can generate a high capacity for geometrical and topological differentiations. Folding a piece of material creates a defined set of parameters of displacement in relation to geometric features such as height, length, and orientation. Specific results are achieved by displacing strategic points on the surface, creating folds as a result of the self organizing tendencies of the fabric. The treatment of the material produces two formal effects: one where it remains standing, the projected fold, and another flat fold where the fabric is forced back onto itself. In the study you are to focus on and study pleat types in order to devise digital models. Pleats are measured folds that are formed at the perimeter of a sheet of fabric. They are usually fixed by means of stitching. Pleat folds can unconfined, running continuously all the way through a sheet of fabric, or they can be bound between two or more stitches. Make The FIRST step of the assignment is to print the grid PDF template that is located on the blog on a 11x17 sheet of paper, and trim the page down according to its prescribed bounding box. Then you will mount the template on a flat sheet of 4 ply material or a piece of foam, in the dimension 15x10 The SECOND step you will purchase or find a thin piece of cotton fabric (preferably white) in the dimension 8x12 The THIRD step you will begin to construct a simple Pleat pattern which utilizes the two formal effects of the standing, projected fold, and another flat fold where the fabric is forced back onto itself. Use example to help you with this. Be sure to use 6-8 pins only to achieve your surface. Be explorative and playful here, you will not achieve an interesting surface on the first try. The FOURTH step you will photograph your physical model in an Axoemetric View and a Top view. Due Thursday Sept. 8th Physical Model complete with pinned surface geometry. 2 8.5x11 Photographs of your Axon and top view.
