We simplify construction is the motto of the Swedish steel component manufacturer Lindab, and a reason for us to look at the product in detail and check out the green credentials: Time and money are crucial elements for builders and developers. A tremendous demand for residential buildings and highly specialized buildings like hospitals and hotels which need to be put up in a tight schedule increases the use of smart building materials to save time. The pace of the Indian construction industry is fast and new technologies are replacing old and laid back building materials like brick work and mortar. The green credentials of the system are ranging from high insulation value (reduced airconditioning), over use of material with recycled content (steel and fibre cement boards) up to reduced construction waste and water free construction. The lindab system shows that a lot of time, labour and maintenance can be saved while constructing a building. It is not a necessity to construct a labour and time intensive concrete structure to build a modern, energy efficient and save building. Lindab shows us the way of construction which is already popular in Europe and just picking up in India.

Drywall systems for multistoried houses can offer excellent thermal insulation properties (U-value 0.3 W/m2K) as compared to a brick and mortar wall (U-value 1.6 W/m2K). The drywall system is assembled from a light weight steel structure, fibre cement boards or gypsum boards (like Saint Gobain Boards) on both sides which allow an individual finish and Rockwool insulation as a filling material to provide thermal as well as sound insulation (db value 45). The lindab steel components can be installed on site or prefabricated at the factory with inbuilt windows and doors. Convincing advantages are construction time and light weight combined with strength and thermal performance which results in lower air conditioning and lower structural cost. Lindab works closely with the architect and prefabricates the elements according to the architects drawing. Parameters like load bearing, heat loss, sound values, fire resistance are incorporated in a 3D structure to calculate the required components thickness and dimensions (lindab has a patented software called ADT tools). The components will be cut and marked to size for a fast and simple assembly on site without wastage of material. The system allows to construct a building with G + 2 without using pillars, beams and concrete. All walls are load bearing and can provide a span of up to 8 meters compared to a concrete structure which allows only a span of 3.6 meters. Time taken to construct the shell and build up walls, floors and roof could be as short as 4 weeks including the foundation. Compared to a concrete house where the approximate construction time is 6 month this system will convince builders who are looking for a fast and simple way of construction. Introducing plumbing and electrical lines in the building walls is very simple and can be done just before fixing the inner board. A price comparison between a lindab structure and a conventional foundation, pillars, beams, bricks and plaster work building shows no significant difference, and the lindab system can work out cheaper as the finishing work is restricted to painting only.

Lindab also manufactures rain management systems (Rain water harvesting) which can help India to save the scarce resource. India represents 15% of the worlds population and only 4% of the worlds fresh water resources. Collecting water from the roof and keeping it away from the foundation can avoid damage of walls and building structure as well as contribute to a higher ground water level. Saint gobain is working with Ark Industrial Products Pvt Ltd to promote this dry wall concept in India. Lindab AB (Ltd ) is a Swedish company having manufacturing facilities in 19 countries in Europe and are established in 35 countries in Europe with a turnover of 2 Billion USD. Ark Industrial products pvt ltd is launching in the first stage the of the Lindab range in India.

he Architect is considered as the Leader of the Design Team and the creator of the built environment. Along with the responsibilities of space planning, aesthetics, functionality and other criteria, architects of today have to deal with terms like Green Building and environmental sustainability. Most architectural universities include subjects like climatology and passive solar design in the curriculum, but are these concepts becoming a part of the design philosophy? A quick look at some of the new construction in the country suggests otherwise. Green Buildings seem to be the new buzz word in the construction industry today. The definition of Green Building stating energy and water conservation, appropriate materials and indoor environment can only beg the question; why isnt every building Green? The number of certified buildings is a small fraction of the total projects built in the world. I strongly believe that every building can and should be Green, and those who feel certification is beneficial, can pursue it. The process of Going Green is quite simply put; optimizing the building to be efficient, comfortable and sensitive to the environment. The architect has the added advantage of using computer simulation tools which can accurately predict how the buildings performs with respect to shading, ventilation, daylight and energy consumption. The images on right clearly illustrate the simplicity and advantages that can be achieved through holistic and integrated design with the aid of simulation. This exercise can be done by the architect or Green Building consultant during the design phase to achieve maximum benefit. The project owner and building occupant are the ones most affected by design. With todays materials, technologies, knowledge and computer, there is no excuse for poor quality of design. Ask your employer, architect, builder or engineer about the Green features of your office, your home and your childrens school. The power to improve your life and protect your health is in your hands and it is time to make a decision which positively affects humanity and our earth.

Green high-rise buildings:

An interview with Ar Sandeep Shikre

Kohinoor Square

We are curious to know how high-rise buildings can be green and sustainable. Architect Sandeep Shikre who designed numerous LEED Gold and Platinum rated Buildings in Mumbai shares his experience on modern and sustainable construction during an Interview with Ms Isabelle from Inspired to be Green:

We see so many high-rise buildings coming up in all the metros, but isnt there a basic conflict between high-rise buildings and sustainability?
The energy consumption of a high-rise building is certainly higher then of a low rise development caused by increased energy for pumping, vertical transportation and the fully exposed building envelope. Today we are required to construct high-rise buildings because of restriction of land, exorbitant property rates and growing population, and there are strategies to make high rise buildings green and sustainable.

What strategies are you following to transform a high-rise building into a Green Building?
First of all we have to look at the buildings envelope because this directly relates to the HVAC energy consumption. Air conditioning devices are the major energy consumer in every building. Excessive heat transfer through the buildings envelope causes high cooling loads and increased energy consumption. To design the buildings envelope in a sustainable manner is the first step towards sustainability and achieving high energy efficiency.

Architect Sandeep Shikre Director, SSA Architects

What are possible strategies to design a green building envelope?

We start with a sun-path analysis and energy modeling of the building to calculate the benefits of the various energy efficiency strategies. As glass is the major element in a high rise building envelope we pay a lot of attention to select the best suitable glass for the building. Even a small change in the glass specification can have a great impact on the energy consumption of the building. In the design phase we need to find a balance between thermal insulation, solar shading, day-light transfer and cost efficiency. The U-value and shading coefficient of the glass are the most important parameters which influence the cooling load of the building. Double Glazed Units (DGUs) have a better (lower) U-value then a single glazed unit and should be selected for any high rise development.

In modern buildings and especially in highrise buildings we see that glass is the preferred material for the building envelope, what are the reasons for that?
Glass is the preferred construction material for the buildings envelope all over the world because it has a lot of benefits. The construction time with glass is faster than conventional walls, and additionally glass combines aesthetics with technical requirements. DGUs help to withstand wind pressures in high rise buildings and support energy conservation strategies by blocking out heat and letting in daylight. In most of our projects we could bring down the LPD to 0.8-0.9 W/sqft with the help of high performance glass as well as daylight sensors,

and this allows savings for artificial lighting and benefits our health at the same time. For me glass is one of the most exciting building materials to work with.

Can you tell us some more green strategies you implement in your projects?
Roofs are a major element in the building envelope responsible for heat gain through solar radiation. Cool roofs created with SRI paints and insulation becomes an efficient strategy in the building envelope of a Green Building. We try to use recycled and regional materials as much as possible and also implement sustainable strategies for the water consumption like grey water treatment, use of non-potable water for flushing and irrigation as well as low-flow fixtures.

The client desired a structure which would be iconic whilst overlooking green spaces. A design that would be a conductive environment for consistency and retail space that would work today and tomorrow. The mall is a multi use structure with minutely planned services which would cater to the retail stores, super stores, multiplex, restaurants, convenience shopping, office block, food courts. The office & hotel floor have dedicated elevators to ensure smooth transmission. The most unique & striking features of the mall is its 300 mtr

frontage. A contemporary structure of glass & stone, SSA has created a building with a kaleidoscopic facade which is an entirely different character from the adjoining buildings. The curving section of the facade accentuates the aesthetic appearance whilst the entrance canopy with its huge steel frames that look and feel strong with a strong presence of metal. The building is designed with an intelligent facade and energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems that enables it to a GOLD certificate LEED building.

You have designed so many green buildings; can you tell us more about the different projects?
The Mudra Building received LEED Gold rating and there we implemented an 8 story atrium fully done with glass. Hot air is extracted through the plenum of the atrium and so we could implement a passive cooling strategy in a very modern building. The Neelkant Building has a very high occupancy development and we concentrated on the buildings envelope and shading devices to give the building a good protection from the sun. In the Kohinoor hospital we implemented a lot of skylights to provide natural light to all the corridors which increases the health of the occupants dramatically.

What about the cost benefit of sustainable construction?

Design strategies to save energy and water do not cost much more and generate savings of 20 to 40%. The incremental cost for high performance building materials is about 2-3% of the building material cost and typical payback is under 3 years. I think it is in our hands to design environmentally sensitive buildings. Yes it is in our hands to design environmentally sensitive buildings and we are happy that you make this happen! MELUHA THE FERN sets a new level for Green hospitality in Mumbai
We are used to luxury and modern design elements in the best hotels around India and Green did not play much of a role in the hospitality sector in India up to now
Niranjan Hiranandani who has been the pioneer of green buildings and hotels at Powai says, Green buildings and green surroundings are what we believe in. Green structures are not only beneficial for the planet but also the residents and travelers. Meluha - The fern is our latest modern deluxe ecotel ready to envelope you in a green lap of luxury! Meluha the Fern is an Ecotel offering a luxurious stay without compromising comfort and design. It is Asias first designer Ecotel. When you walk through Meluha the Fern you will not observe a major difference compared to any other 5-star hotel. The design is modern the service is friendly and you find all the amenities you would wish for. But the difference is in the detail: The lobby and restaurants are flooded with daylight and no light will be switched on during the day, theses makes guests feel very comfortable and it saves on operating cost. All the flowers mainly orchids - are potted because of the no cut flowers principle of Ecotel. The hotel does not use boilers to heat water for the bathrooms and kitchen; instead, the excess heat generated by the air conditioners is reused to heat water up to 50C, with the heat pumps acting as a back-up during the winter season, when higher water temperatures may be required. In the rooms you find a green button on the AC control, a simple measure to reduce the energy consumption for air-conditioning by increasing the temperature by 2 degrees. There is also a rewarding system in place for guests who practice energy-conservation during their stay. Another strategy to reduce the air-conditioning load of the hotel was a sustainable designed building with shaded windows and double glazed units. Water conservation is as important as Energy conservation, one reason for the hotel to implement low-flush toilets and low-flow fixtures. The waste water is treated by a Sewage Treatment Plant and later on the water is used for irrigation purposes. The choice of materials follows the green pathway: Instead of hardwood all the wood used in the hotel is rubber wood a rapidly renewable alternative to hardwood. All signboards and paper is made from recycled paper. All groceries used in the kitchen are bought in reusable packing to avoid plastic wrapping. The chef is certainly inspired by the green message; he is creating a menus with organic and locally grown products and he mixes the masalas himself. The hotel is following a strict waste separating policy and they even generate income through that! Organic waste is used in the hotels own vermiculture unit where the waste turns into natural fertilizer for plants within a few weeks. Well, most amazing is the staff which is trained to conserve energy, water and resources and has to take regular exams in those subjects. The people at Melhua the Fern are inspiring their guests with the green message and so we would hope that this way of operating a hotel is getting more popular in the future. Punish Sharma, General Manager of Meluha the Fern in Mumbai is convinced of the Ecotel benefits: Our guests love the concept and return frequently, this is a reason for us to stick to our concept. The operating cost of our hotel is lower than compared to hotels at the same standard, because we save a lot of energy and water.

Ecotel certification
The Ecotel certification in India was introduced by Mr Param Kannampilly chairman and managing director of Concept Hospitality. The Ecotel Certification is based on five areas of environmentalism, each of which is designated by a Globe award. These five areas are referred to as the cornerstones of environmental responsibility or simply as Globes. These Globes are:

Energy conservation
This requires the existence of a formalized framework to actually reduce the energy consumption of the hotel. The energy-efficient design of the hotel is as important as the involvement of the guests as well as the employees.

Water conservation
The effective conservation of water in all departments of the hotel, across all levels is a prime segment of the Ecotel certification. The extent to which water is recycled and utilized is also considered an important factor. Again, all employees are expected to be well-versed with the water conservation operations of the hotel.

No Plastics Policy in the rooms

Employee environmental education

Evaluates how involved the employees are in the efforts of the hotel to contribute towards the environment. The hotel should has training modules in place for employees at all levels to familiarize them with the eco-friendly initiatives of the hotel.

Environmental commitment
The hotel must demonstrate the existence of a formalized commitment towards the preservation and enhancement of the natural environment. It must, through all operations, activities and written statements, communicate its commitment to the environment. For e.g. the mission statement of the hotel/ resort must mention its environmental dedication. Additionally, every hotel should have a green team headed by a member of the top management ensuring that all departments are working in consonance with the hotels mission of environmental responsibility.

Watersaving Toilets

Solid waste management

The hotel must effectively recycle and manage waste wherever generated. Proper systems for collection, recycling and disposal of these wastes in all departments of the hotel are a must for the Ecotel certification. Moreover, all employees of the hotel must undergo training in the basic solid waste management techniques.

The Young Environmentalists spreading the Green message

GREEN BUILDING DISCUSSION

he Young Environmentalists Programme was founded in 2005 when Mumbai went under the floods, after much research the trust found that the nullahs, rivers and lakes were clogged together with the stormwater drains with plastic bags and thus started the Cloth Bag revolution in Mumbai. Today its founder Elsie Gabriel who has studied environment law and is a mass communications post graduate works together with her team for corporates and hotels to empower them with environment change making programs. Elsie is also the winner of the Mayors award in 2010, and International GIANTS awards for her work in the field of environment social work. If we want to keep environmental protections of our air and water, our endangered species, our wilderness, and so much more - and create a green vision for the future, we must continue to lead public education campaigns and grassroots organizing efforts and support the next generation of environmental activists and leaders. We aim to recognize the outstanding leadership efforts of communities across the country that is working on environmental conservation, preservation, and restoration as well. We have the firm belief that young people, when informed and empowered, when they realize that what they do truly makes a difference, can indeed change the world, is at the very heart of our program. This powerful message of hope inspires us all. Our program is dedicated to inspiring tomorrow's leaders todaynot only motivating young people to learn about pertinent issues facing our local, national and global communities, but help them actually design, lead and implement their own projects as a means of solving them. Elsie Gabriel, Founder President, Young Environmentalists Program Trust www.youngenvironmentalists.com

WITH EXPERT DEEPA SATHIARAM

Everyone talks about LEED Platinum rated buildings, but how important is this certification when we talk about Green Buildings in general?
Certification is basically a validation of the good work done and should be looked at as a by-product rather than the end goal. Any rating system be it LEED or GRIHA or any other green building rating system is only a tool to achieve recognition of the good work done. The effort should be to see how we can meaningfully achieve energy efficiency, water savings, resource efficiency etc. through sensible design and selection of materials and in a cost-effective manner. The rating and certification will then come in any case since the project is doing all the sustainable measures in the right manner. Certification has its own benefits such as an independent 3rd party validation of the good work done, a mechanism by which one can institutionalize sustainability and ensure continuity etc. but it should not be the only end goal. From a marketing and brand building perspective too certification is important but like I said we should focus on doing the right things then the points and rating will automatically come.

Within the last 4 years Green Buildings and rating systems have gained a lot of importance in India. How will it develop in the future, in your opinion?
In the future too it will gain further momentum and more importance and sustainability is becoming a key focus point not just for organizations but also for governments and legislatures. However we need to be cautious and mindful to ensure that in this process we do not dilute the requirements and the sanctity of why its important to go green. Today honestly to plan and construct green buildings is relatively simpler when to continuing to maintain it green throughout its lifetime. We are focusing a lot on sustainability in design and construction today which is good and easy. The more difficult part is to ensure sustainability in operations and maintenance which is a very critical component to ensure that the building continues to be green. The green building movement is going to gain a lot more momentum in the years to come and thats why it becomes critical to ensure that the existing green buildings continue to perform as green buildings and set good examples for future buildings to emulate.

environment including better fresh air, higher levels of filtration, use of low VOC materials, more daylight for spaces, reduction of contaminants and pollutants etc. These are the softer aspects of green buildings and usually not given enough credit still in India but they can go a long way in terms of improving employee satisfaction, higher staff productivity, lower absenteeism etc. The softer sides of green are always difficult to evaluate, but there are studies done in the US and rest of the world which show that people working in green offices or factories can have a 5-6 % higher productivity because of better indoor environment In the last few years in India too these softer benefits of green are gaining attention with more and more organizations reaping the benefits through better employee satisfaction, higher productivity etc.

What lies ahead for the Green Building movement in India?

In days to come more focus on existing buildings needs to happen. Not every day that we build new buildings. Energy efficiency and sustainability of existing buildings is key for the green building movement in India to move to the next level. Ms Deepa Sathiaram, Executive Director of En3. She is a LEED AP since 2003 and a leading international sustainable design expert working with diverse project teams and creating sustainable habitats in the U.S., India, Europe and Middle East. En3 is today one of the largest green building consulting firms in the country consulting for over 100 million sq ft of green spaces across India. She is a recognized HVAC and refrigeration consultant. She is the Past President of the ASHRAE South India Chapter and also the Past National Environment Chair for the Young Indians (Yi) arm of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Inspired to be GREEN thanks Ms Deepa Sathiaram for her time and insightful comments.

What is more important in a green building project: The materials or the design?
Green is an integrated approach we need to look at everything the design the materials, the systems, how the occupants would use the building etc. Only then we would have a holistic approach and the end product would be truly sustainable. The first step is of course the design of the building itself and also equally important the design of the other areas excluding the building. The approach for the design should be keeping in mind the region, climate, location where the building is coming up and what the eventual end use(s) of the building is going to be. We are in a tropical environment and our focus should be to reduce heat coming into the building since no matter how efficient your air conditioning systems are you are bound to use energy once the heat has come in. So designs should focus on how to mitigate heat but bring in light through effective passive techniques including form, orientation, external shading, mass walls and roofs etc. So the design plays a key role in reducing the cooling loads for the building and thereby the reducing the overall energy consumption itself. Good designs must be supported by good materials which can also play a significant role in reducing energy consumption, reducing carbon emissions etc. Both are critical and it is important to achieve the right balance to create a good and performing green building.

Green Buildings are not only more energy and water efficient but they also promise higher comfort and better air quality for their occupants. Are these additional benefits having any importance in the Indian market?
There are a lot of intangible benefits in green buildings including better indoor environment and air quality that provides better health for all its occupants. There are many components that can lead to better indoor

Mainettis Green Factory

Platinum Rated Green Factory Journey...
Green from scratch:
It is Mainetti India's belief that a factory does not become green only by virtue of certifications obtained and practices followed over the years. A true green building is one which has been designed green right from scratch. Mainetti has implemented green architecture such as enabling the longer faades of a naturally ventilated space to face east-west direction. There by it has been made sure that there is maximum cross ventilation and cooling by the virtue of the east coast's wind flow effects. Correspondingly, the best architectural practices have been ensured to design airconditioned areas. Here, the shorter faades are designed to face east-west direction, which is followed by adequate shielding through greenery and solar barriers on all the sides. This ensures a minimal HVAC load and thereby maximum energy savings. In keeping with the same philosophy, over 95% roofing of the site's building footprint has been covered with reflective panels with a Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of over 75 %. This ensures that the whole site remains cool and minimises the Heat Island Effect. Additionally, Mainetti has allocated more than 30% of its site area for greenery. This along with its smart landscaping practices has ensured a cool & green factory, that also uses water smartly.

Sustainable Site:
Mainetti has made sure to minimise the carbon emmisions arising from fuel combustion and maximisation of fossil fuel utilisation in the following ways: a) Over 60% of the employees reach the workplace via shuttle services provided by the management. This transport pooling mechanism not only reduces the individual carbon footprints but the companies footprint on the whole. b) All important amenities are present in and around the site and hence Mainetti saves heavily on fuel. c) Over 30% of the site is covered under the green belt. Mainetti not only maintains the green belt within its site but the greenery on the factory exteriors as well are taken care of. d) Over 95% of the site is covered with roofing materials that have an SRI of 75% and above. A significant portion of this roof cover uses PUF(polyurethane foam) panels for high insulation and heat ingress minimization into the factory floors. e) Provision of re-charge points for hybrid/battery cars, provisions & designs for the differently abled have also been incorporated as a part of green design. f) All lights are closed to sky and there is absolutely no light trespass from the site.

Mainettis Green Factory is a good example of how a factory can be more than Just Green. Mainettis smart factory not only ensures tremendous savings on energy and water, but has achieved this without compromising on the occupants comfort and aesthetics. Thereby the factory is Green and Smart at the same time. Innovative concepts have been implemented at a very early stage, thereby paving way for a New Green Bench Mark amongst Factories.

Water Conservation
Mainetti has taken all the required measures to ensure maximum water conservation on site. The following aspects elucidate the same: Landscaping: Where many organizations boast of a large green belt and heavy landscaping, they might be doing more harm than good for the environment. Know how? Turf is the most common greenery and less do people know that turf is a huge water guzzler !!! For all you know, the amount of carbon emitted in pumping the water for turf maybe more than the carbon it absorbs. This is the Change that Mainetti has implemented in a tremendous way. First of all, more than 30 % of the whole site is covered with greenery. Of this region falling under the green belt, more than 75% is covered by drought tolerant species, native species and shrubs. Less than 10% is covered by turf and the rest of green area (around 15%) is untouched and thus accounts for the natural topography retainership. This way, Mainetti ensures the following: 1. Carbon absorption on site 2. Mainetti has Sprinkler and Drip irrigation in place as against the conventional hose pipe watering methods which resulting heavy water loss due to leakage, misting and stagnation. 3. The water for the landscaping is STP treated water.

Low flow water fixtures Mainetti has in place the most efficient water fixtures (reduction levels more than LEED & IGBC norms) in place along with the employment of Bio-Blocks which result in waterless urinals. These Bio-Blocks process the waste without generating any odour and consuming water. The cumulative savings obtained by these two estimates to around 70% annual water savings as compared to the base case. Sewage Treatment Plant Mainetti boasts of a STP on site that boasts of the latest technology and a capacity to handle over 95% of the factories sewage. The recycled water confirms to the pollution control boards norms by a huge margin and the treated water is used for landscaping requirements. Rain Water Harvesting In an era where most of the project teams rely on collection pits and percolation pits to collect Rain-Water, Mainetti has adopted the latest technology called the Injection well. This well instead of collecting or percolating the water into the soil, injects the water to the water table or aquifer directly by boring a well as deep as the water table itself. The head created by the accumulated water results in a hydraulic pressure that injects the water to the aquifer resulting in a capture of thousands of meter cube of water.

The ASHRAE, by itself is a competent, energy efficient standard and to score more than 65% over the base case was never going to be a cake walk. This is how they made it come true: i) All the ACs are rated 3.5 stars as against the 2.78 starred base case which requires more energy to operate. ii) The rooms are fitted with ERVs (energy recovery ventilators) which unlike the AHUs extract the chillness from the outgoing exhaust air and uses the same to cool the incoming fresh air; thereby saving around 70% on AC load. iii) The lights employed by the organisation (CFL) score heavily over the Metal Halide base case lights. These ensure high savings especially during the late evening and night shifts. iv) The saving of more than 65% over an ASHRAE base case has become a new benchmark in the industry. v) 100% of the non-process loads and a significant fraction of process loads too are catered by off-site renewable energy from Bio-mass power plants. Heat Jackets: The Thermal Shielding Jackets ensure the following a) Utilisation of spent heat during start-up and running conditions. b) Elimination of radiation into the atmosphere and conservation of energy simultaneously. Online Grinding Machine: REDUCE:REUSE:RECYCLE a) State-of-art closed loop process. b) Direct feed of spent material enabling up-to 100% process waste reduction, re-utilisation & recycling. a) High reflective panels 80 % of radiation is directly reflected back. 15 % heat is absorbed by the PUF sandwich. Only around 5% of the total radiation penetrates into the building. b) Reflectsol Glasses: Saint Gobains trade mark Reflectsol glasses that are not only Double-glazed and tinted but filmed as well, are employed to keep the heat ingress levels to a minimal level.

Energy Conservation
Mainettis success story has been defined by a very significant role played by the energy performance. Right from the aluminium faade insulation to high performance glass; the PUF panels to the 4 star ACs; the CFL lightings to the highly efficient machines; the buildings orientation to the cooling turbo vents, every single component of the building had to be an efficient participant to ensure a saving of over 65% over an ASHRAE base case.

Material Conservation:
The Glass for the factory was manufactured at the neighbouring Saint Gobain glass factory. The manufacturing facility of the Metecno Manufacturers of High SRI Insulation panel installed by Mainetti, are 300 meters away from Mainetti's Green Factory. The cement, concrete, bricks manufacturing units were a stone's throw away from the construction site. The polycarbonate sheets, steel structures, aluminium panelling, galvanized roofing, glasses etc account for a heavy percentage of recycled content in the construction material.

ventilation. Mainetti supersedes these values and goes on to achieve an average of over 25% for all the naturally ventilated zones. iii. The Access to daylight is and working under natural lighting conditions has been a proven method of stress reducer and it can also have an impact on the productivity and satisfaction of employees, students and even clients and retail customers. In an experiment, stores that included skylights over certain departments found that overall sales per square foot were higher in the departments lit by natural light. Mainetti has incorporated all the necessary features such as skylights, wall lights and adequate glazing to ensure that it has the required Daylight factors for more than 95 of the site areas. This has not only made certain the increase in productivity levels, but the savings in energy due to the disposal of an equivalent amount of electricity, is huge. iv. Facilities like Break-Out space for the employees surrounded by greenery and under the cool wood shade provide the much required relaxation, dash of fresh air and stretch on a hectic day. The provision is centrally located and hence not far from any point on the site. v. The Gym is another such facility available for the employees to improve on their fitness and have a good session of stress bust. vi. To top it all, The factory is a no smoking zone and thus is a healthy place to work in. vii. Not only the factory is certified green, but even the house keeping chemicals used in the factory are GS-37 certified. These green certified chemicals are toxic-void and are very safe on the house keepers, occupants and the environment as a whole.

For the occupants: (IEQ & Occupant comfort) Mainetti, as mentioned above has taken more than adequate measures to ensure levels of comfort which directly reflect upon the productivity and performance of its inmates. a) All the zones of the factory have enriched supply of oxygen by the following means: i. All air-conditioned rooms have access to fresh air via an Energy Recovery Wheel System that ensures heat recovery up-to 70 % Where as the Ashrae Base Case requires a minimum of 5 CFM per person for optimum oxygen supply; & the standard demands over 30% betterment over the already competitive Ashrae Base Case, Mainetti has incorporated systems that better the Ashrae Base case by a whooping value of 80% (aprox. 9 CFM of fresh air per person) ii. For the naturally ventilated regions, the demands of a floor to openings ratio of 2% and a ratio of 4% for enhanced

reen buildings have to minimise the impact on the environment during its life cycle in terms of water, energy and resource utilization, while maintaining the comfort levels and healthy environment in terms of Indoor air quality. Any building envelope is all about movement of air and water and their relative interaction to manage the external and internal heat loads and lighting etc. These lead to significant energy consumption and water is also consumed in significant quantities, not only for direct usages (primary uses) such as drinking, wash and bath, kitchen and laundry but also for secondary usages such as cooling towers, horticulture, toilet and flushing etc. The total fresh water consumption of a building depends on the total water requirement for various applications as primary and secondary usages and the extent of recycle / reuse of treated waste water. It is possible to treat and recycle 80-100% of wastewater depending on the ratio of primary and secondary usages. Effective rain water harvesting and water conservation measures can lead to minimal usage of fresh water. An Integrated approach to water management with appropriate usages of fresh water from surface or ground water as available, rain water harvesting and reuse of treated wastewater after effective and safe treatment besides water conservation measures during the design stage are very relevant for a Green building in today's water scenario. 100% reuse of wastewater/ zero discharge are some of the stringent measures which can lead to significant savings in water consumption which can be a true measure of a Green building. Sometimes, the wastewater can be segregated into grey and black wastewater for effective treatment and recycling. Salt/TDS build up and nutrient build up besides turbidity and bacterial contamination issues may not allow one

to achieve 100% zero discharge status and thus a careful water management scheme must be designed to minimise the buildup of these components. The total water management scheme of a Green building should be well integrated from design to implementation to O&M stage. Water procurement, storage, distribution, treatment with segregation of fresh water and recycled water are some of the important design aspects of green buildings besides fire fighting systems where again water is required. The waste water management also becomes a part of this integration system and plays a major role in the overall fresh water requirement within the complex. The waste water treatment systems are mostly based on biological treatment. There are several options for biological treatment systems being used within a modern building complex such as SAFF, FBR/FAB, MBBR, MBR and SBR. All these processes have their unique features in terms of space requirement, efficiency of treatment, sustainability of performance, energy consumption, maintenance requirement and cost of operation. SAFF, FAB and MBBR have all been operating in large number of installations but suffer from the problem of inconsistencies of performance results due to load changes and are mostly based on manual operation. MBR on the other hand provides a very good quality of treated water, eliminating the need for tertiary treatment in most cases (other than that for the removal of dissolved solids). However, the energy consumption and frequent shut down due to problem of membrane fouling (any membrane failure requires a long shut down and needs re-commissioning of the plant) make the system unsuitable for green buildings. In addition the maintenance cost is high due to high cost of membrane replacement.

Major Process Steps in SBR Technology

Decant

Considering all these shortcomings with various technologies, problems associated with them, the most appropriate system with lowest energy consumption and most consistent in performance seems to be the SBR process, which is an old age proven process/technology developed in early 19th century but upgraded with the application of modern developments in software/ hardware for control systems to the State of Art technology of 21st. century. The sequential batch reactor (SBR) technology has distinct advantages and edge over all other existing technologies. By virtues of its potential benefits and intended results SBR has automatically become the prerequisite for Green buildings for treatment and reuse of wastewater generated from it. Being futuristic in nature with several unique features in terms of logic control system, hardware design and fabrication, overall ability to design, install and commission the system and flexibility of operating the system with the changes in norms/capacity/treated water quality etc during the life cycle of the Green building SBR system has become the most desired treatment technology. Above all, this technology is much more flexible for operation and maintenance of the plant. Nowadays, with the development of various wastewater treatment technologies SBR system has also gone through phases of development and come up as the most modern state of art technology. The SBR system allows the advantages of a typical batch process with better control over the treated water quality, the continuity of treatment and regulated sewage feed into the reactor. This is particularly desirable in a building complex where the wastewater generation goes through typical cycle of

high peaks and prolonged troughs with low (or zero) flow rates. This ability provides the unique advantage of the SBR system in terms of very low residual BOD3 at 27oC and suspended solids (SS) in the treated water. This is most essential in case of Green buildings as the treated wastewater is always further treated for reuse in the building, unlike in other cases where it is discharged and needs only to comply with the requirements of pollution control board. The results of some typical installations have shown the final treated water SS and BOD content to be mostly below 10 mg/l. The physical appearance of treated water is also excellent with clear transparent water with low turbidity (<15 NTU). The system could be operated either in semi-automatic or fully automatic mode through a logic controller and all the data are recorded through a SCADA system. The advanced version of the SBR also has the VFD system for the blower drive to conserve energy consumption as per the load requirement. The adaptation of these modifications reduces the power consumption by 15% to 20% with respect to other technologies. Another advantage of SBR over other technologies is that energy consumption in SBR will be proportional to flow rate of sewage in the plant and even it could be possible to achieve an overall energy savings of 25% to 30% in practical operating conditions. The total system operation requires very low manpower and the operation can be monitored from a remote place through the data transmission system and CCTV. The SBR process based plants can have an option of manless operation i.e. fully automatic.

An overview of STP along with decanting system based on SBR Technology

A sectional view of SBR tank

The SBR system has only few mechanical drives and hence maintenance requirements are quite low. In fact, the number of process units, tanks etc. are lesser and consequently it requires minimal foot print as well as making it very simple to install and commission the plant. SBR technology also removes the scope of using any kind of media/membrane etc. which minimizes the overhead cost while operating the plant. The system design could be based on sufficient redundancy so that the plant has the ability to continue operation with some adjustment in load and be able to handle the problem without any major shut down. Flexibility in plant operation and control according to the various treated water quantity and quality is another special quality of such system.

Inspired to be GREEN I Volume 10 I

29

Looking on the requirement and need, SBR plant has the unique capability of being able to be auto commissioned (e.g. dissolved oxygen, pH and sludge volume etc). It could be monitored remotely and thus it involves minimal human interventions compare to other technologies. Also, there are lesser number of process units in SBR technology and minimum resource required to build the plant so minimum waste generation during the life cycle of the plant. Hence it also reduces the capital cost as well as operation cost of the plant.

All biological processes have some advantages and limitations as energy consumption, space requirement, ease of operation, reliability of treated water quality and sustainability. Appropriate designing, proper implementation and after sales services, operation and maintenance are the key factors for a successful STP installation in a green building. The data in table below shows the summary of all these factors for different treatment systems for their comparative assessment.

Green Factories make business sense an inspired discussion with the Ecologikol Team

Why should factories in India consider Going Green?

While Green Building certifications are now very popular for commercial buildings and residential developments, Green Factories are still rare. In a lot of cases factories do not make use of daylight, strategies to reduce airconditioning loads or establish a water treatment plant. We are not only talking about the environmental damage caused by unsustainable planned factories, also great economical losses occur for the company through operating inefficient factories. What a lot of people

dont know is that the incremental cost to go green is very small we are talking about 2 - 8 % to achieve energy savings of more than 50% for a new building.
I understand that it would be better to build new and greener factories but what solution do you see for existing factories?
We have just received the highest rating of IGBC Green Factories for the Mainetti Factory which was a retrofit of an existing factory. The Mainetti Factory saves 65% of energy compared to the base case which is a great achievement. There are a lot of ways to reduce the energy consumption for factories by implementing daylight strategies, right choice of glass and insulation of the building envelope. Old factories often use asbestos sheets for roofing which generates a high cooling requirement. Energy efficient factories use PUF sandwich panels with a high insulation value and a solar reflective coating to reduce the loads on the building. It is important to implement skylights this way the factory does not require any artificial lighting during the day and saves on lighting energy.

What is important for the design of a Green Factory?

Buildings should be designed for the whole life cycle, if we look at a buildings lifespan we see that a core value lies in energy savings. To achieve those savings the selection of materials and systems is very important. Wall construction materials, roofing and selection of a glass which is blocking the suns heat radiation but allowing visible light to enter the building seem to be most important. The HVAC system along with the lighting system should be selected based on their energy efficiency. There is also a great scope for the future in making buildings more energyefficient through sustainable planning and evaluation of efficient strategies to reduce energy consumption.
Ecologikol is an organization offering end to end business solutions in the areas of climate change and sustainability. Ecologikols experts have worked with major corporates and are experienced in successfully managing and executing more than 50 climate change and sustainability projects across industrial and commercial sectors. More information at www.ecologikol.com.

What are new technologies which can be implemented to reduce the buildings energyconsumption?
Geothermal and radiant cooling is a new strategy to reduce the energy-consumption for air-conditioning. The geothermal technology is quite new in India but there are already a few successful implement projects which make use of the relatively cold temperatures of the ground to reduce the energy consumption of the cooling equipment. Also solar energy is hardly used in factories, there is a big potential for the future.

Our Story
Our story started back in 1963 when Cornelis Verolme, the famous Dutch shipbuilder sailed into New York Harbour and marvelled at the imposing skyline. He noticed that the towering skyscrapers of New York were mostly clad in glass and thought how difficult it must have been to keep them cool in summer and warm winter. Cornelis became passionate with the idea of finding a solution for this problem and experimented tirelessly with many ideas and concepts. In 1965 he established the Verolme vacuum metalizing company and developed a process still unique today of applying a microscopic layer of aluminium to textile. Cornelis believed that if he could create metal backed fabrics that could be made into curtains and blinds, with the metal side facing outwards, heat and glare could be reflected outside the building. By regulating this heat and light, buildings could not only benefit by significant energy savings but would also create a much more comfortable environmental for occupants. The innovations war born and the name Verosol was created from the first four letters of Cornelis surname VERO and the word SOL, meaning sun. Since those early years, we continue to live Cornelis legacy and strive to create sustainable environments where people can live and work comfortably.

he building sector contributes 40% of total energy consumed in the country and expected to grow in the future with the increase in demand for the buildings, both residential and commercial. HVAC and lighting are the major energy guzzlers in a building. Therefore there is an immediate need to conserve energy in the existing buildings as well as new buildings by selecting highly performing technologies without compromising health and well being of the occupants. Typically, energy consumption in a commercial building for a tropical region can be broken down into: HVAC-50% Lighting- 21% Equipment and Others- 29% The above statistics show that the lighting and HVAC are the major energy consuming equipment in a building. These two equipment offers tremendous scope for energy saving. The load on the Air-conditioners can be optimized by reducing the building heat gain, besides equipment efficiency. The heat gain in a building can be minimized by adopting appropriate technologies for wall, glass, lighting, fresh air, plug loads, etc., The technologies and strategies to be deployed to minimize heat gain would vary depending on the climatic condition and location. The pie chart on the right indicates the percentage of heat gain from each of the above mentioned elements in a building. India being a tropical climate, heat load in the building should be reduced to lower the HVAC load. The heat ingress in the building is mainly from the building envelope as it is directly

exposed to the solar radiations. Designing an effective building envelope to reduce the heat ingress is an important step in achieving energy efficiency in a building. The heat ingress in the form of conduction, convection and radiation occurs from exterior faade glazing, besides wall and roof. Therefore having a plan in place in regard to the use of highly efficient Building Energy Use glass, balancing important criterions related to lighting and HVAC Fans HVAC will resultHVAC Pumps reduction in energy consumption. in drastic 7%

Standards Guidelines for Glass in India

ASHRAE 90.1 restricts the glass area to 40% (base case condition) of the wall area as increased glazing increases the heat load. ECBC restricts the glass area to 60% with stringent glass recommended for glazing area in the range of 40% to 60%. Glazing is a critical element in the faade design to get more day lighting to the building interiors and provide views for the occupants for better performance. The glazing should be more on the north and south side. But south side glazing should be protected with external shade to reduce the amount of direct sunlight entering the building. The glazing on the East and West orientation should be minimized as maximum exposure to sun happens in these directions and also can be protected by keeping buffer zone in these two orientations.

that more light passes through the glazing, ranges from 0 1. VLT and SHGC should be well balanced to have comfortable working conditions, and good energy performing building. Therefore a glass with Low U value and low SHGC gives good energy performance in a tropical climate, whereas a glass with Low U value and High SHGC gives good energy performance in cold climate.

Intangible Benefits of Glass

Glass provides a psychological connection to the outside world. Views through glass can reduce the visual fatigue. The sick building syndrome in the occupants can largely be reduced and thereby improving occupant health and productivity coupled with better indoor air quality. Working long hours in electric lighting is believed to be deleterious to health; working in daylight will be more cheerful and create a healthy environment. Daylight provides high luminance and permits excellent colour discrimination and colour rendering. These two properties mean that daylight provides the necessary condition for good vision. Aesthetically, the building looks more appealing, modern, speaking todays architectural language. This will increase marketability of the property.

Criterions
With the modern building architecture focusing on the glass, the right selection of it has become vital; which is based on the following criterions: Energy Performance: Maximum heat gain in a building is through solar radiation, conduction and convection, from the glazing. Air conditioning systems are the major energy guzzlers accounting to 50-60% of total energy demand of a building. A high performance glazing can reduce solar and thermal heat penetrating into the building, thus controlling the increase of temperature. Day lighting: Use of right glass helps in bringing an optimal natural light inside the building, thus reducing the use of artificial light. Visible Light Transmittance of the glass determines the amount of day light entering the building.

Tangible Benefits of Glass

Use of efficient glass with good VLT will give ample yet comfortable lighting conditions. Thereby, decreasing the load on lighting power required. Further, use of daylight sensors can help keep the room lit to perfection without overdoing it. This is done by sensing the amount of light in a room and adjusting accordingly. Daylight Sensors can reduce the artificial lighting needs and increase the life of fixture. They automatically infer the window orientation and the cloudiness levels of the current sky to predict the incoming daylight and set window transparency accordingly. Around 10% energy savings is achieved by adopting these sensors than not using it, without sacrificing the user comfort. A low U-Value and SHGC glass reduces the heat ingress thereby contributing to a decrease in HVAC load and thus reducing the Energy consumption. Glass contribution to LEED certification cannot be neglected. It can contribute around four points in Energy Optimization, Daylight, and Views credits. Glass will also have impact on recycled content and regional material credits. In regard to GRIHA rating, glass will have great impact on Criterion 13-Optimize building design to reduce conventional energy demand, and Criterion 14- Optimize energy performance of building within specified comfort limits.

Role of U-Value, SHGC, and VLT

U-Factor - Measures the insulating performance of a faade. A low U-Factor indicates a better insulating window. SHGC Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is a measure of its efficiency in blocking the heat from the sun. A lower number indicates less solar heat coming through, ranges from 0 - 1. In a warm climate, it is desirable to have a low SHGC glass. But for a cold climate, where we need more heat to decrease the load on heaters, it is desirable to have a high SHGC glass. VLT Visible Light Transmittance is the amount of visible light that passes through a window. A higher number indicates

indows can conserve energy through two different ways. The window material should not consume high energy to produce or it should not put much strain on our energy reserves and natural resources and the window, once installed should prevent any energy losses through it. Let us first look at the window material. The most popularly used material for window frames are Wood, Steel, Aluminum and PVC or Vinyl. Using wood puts a lot of stress on our already depleting forest reserves. One can observe from the above that among the window frame material PVC is the most environment friendly material. Basic aluminum is extracted from aluminum ore or Bauxite. This process consumes about 56kWH of energy per Kg of aluminum by the most efficient process of extraction#.

PVC is 57% salt and rest is natural gas or petroleum produced through a chemical process which consumes lowest energy even among all the highly consumed polymers. Natural salt is abundantly available and total PVC production consumes only 0.3% of annual oil and gas consumption and 10% of salt consumption*. Both window frame section of both aluminum and PVC are produced by a process called extrusion. The PVC extrusion is a very low energy consumption process, operated at a temperature of 1850C, the aluminum extrusion is done at a temperature above 7000C. Lets have a look at how a window can be efficient in conserving energy in a building. *Source AAMA VIB 2005 #Source: US Department of Energy

Heat loss / gain through a window can happen through any of the following four ways: 1. Heat flow through a window: This is measured by U value. 2. Amount of heat gained from direct solar heat as a factor of total heat falling on the window: Affected by the glass used in the window and less affected by the framing material. 3. Amount of visible light allowed through a window as a factor of total visible light falling on the window: Affected by the glass used in the window and less affected by the framing material. 4. It is the amount of air that passes through a window: This is affected by how the window is made and installed, and depends on the design, type of material used and technology used to fabricate the window. U Value of Frame Material

Energy Losses Through a Window

PVC has the lowest U value which implies it is the preferred material for Energy efficient windows.

Insulation in Fenesta windows is further improved by the use of sealants between the wall and frame, double or even triple glazing and fusion welded joints that leave no gaps. The potential for energy conservation is enormous. The U value of a typical aluminum single glazed window is about 6.591 W/m2K and that of Wood/Vinyl 4.77 W/m2K. Apart from being energy efficient, UPVC is also an environment friendly material. Resource Reuse: UPVC is 100% recyclable. A report by British Plastics Federation, states that PVC can be recycled relatively straightforwardly. It is now common practice to recover and recycle factory wastes and / or off-cuts after the window has been fabricated. Today technology is available to recycle UPVC 100%. Regional Materials: Thanks to producers like Fenesta Building System (DSCL), UPVC window is locally available across India. Indoor environment quality: Today UPVC windows are designed to perfection and fabricated in modern state of the art factories provide windows with excellent sealing to keep environmental pollutants like sound, dust and even tobacco smoke isolated. With these windows a sound insulation of more 30% is always possible. Life expectancy: As per British Plastics Federation the life expectancy of a PVC window is over 40 years. Low emitting materials (adhesives and sealants): The silicone sealants used for sealing window around the periphery have nil VOC content and are safe to use. Low emitting materials (paints and coating): The PVC window is extruded pristine white and does not require any maintenance. It can be easily cleaned with soap & water and does not require any painting. If you follow the LEED/ IGBC Rating system, the use of UPVC windows can contribute to the following credit points: Energy and Atmosphere under EA credit 1 Regional Material under MR Credit 5.1 and 5.2 Recycled material under MR Credit 4.1 & 4.2 Low VOC material under IEQ credit 4.1

How Fenesta UPVC Windows contribute to Green Buildings: Fenesta UPVC windows offer a number of benefits over conventional wood, aluminum and steel windows. Some of these benefits, that greatly improve quality of life, are as follows: Noise and Dust Proof: Silicon sealing, multi point locks and non-conducting properties of UPVC make these windows noise and dust proof More Sunlight, brighter rooms: Strength of windows allows Fenesta to make windows that are large in size, allowing more sunlight Monsoon proof: The company has engineered a special windows for heavy torrential rains Windows to withstand high wind speeds by imparting additional strength. Ventilation: Ease of use allows ample ventilation and sunlight in the house Maintenance free and long lasting: These windows do not require paint or polishing and are therefore maintenance free. Saves Energy: These windows cut air conditioning costs significantly. FENESTA Fenesta Building Systems is India's largest UPVC windows solutions provider, specializing in the design, manufacture, installation and service of precisionengineered made-to-order UPVC window and door systems. Green building Technologies in Hospitals

Leslie Diamond Health Care Center, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (Lafarge Worldwide projects)
India is experiencing a growing demand for modern building materials for hospitals and specialized clinics. The selection of Green Building materials for these buildings is a difficult task. When one material needs to meet a dozen requirements from fire resistance to thermal insulation the number of possible products is reduced drastically. There are specific requirements and the right selection of building materials can influence the performance, comfort, hygiene and aesthetics of the building in a positive way. Mr. Gregory Lukasik, CEO Lafarge Boral Gypsum India Pvt Ltd also agree to the fact with Ms Isabelle H, Editor Inspired to be Green about the specialized material requirements for healthcare sector:

The healthcare building sector is experiencing phenomenal growth rates. What are the driving forces behind that?
The health care sector in India has become a booming sector in the construction domain after hospitality and retail. With a number of multi-location based private hospital chains the building and interior design of the hospitals have now gone beyond the standard functional requirements. Hospitals also have an identity, focus on aesthetics while of course they still maintain the performance required such as acoustic, fire, high traffic and hygiene. Building materials such as gypsum board partitions and ceilings are ideal material for providing the desired properties. It wouldnt be exaggerated to say today that there are hospital suites that compare well with a luxury suite in a 5 star hotel. All this combines with the need of building faster and more efficiently, and has given ways to new technologies in construction and new materials in the designs of the buildings. The main factors that are responsible for innovation in the building sector in healthcare are a growing demand, a growing importance of India as a medical tourism destination (thanks to still comparatively lower cost for an equivalent quality of treatment as available internationally) and also a growing number of private players venturing into this lucrative business. This results in a growing need to meet international safety and quality standards, a need to differentiate and a growing information base about new and efficient building materials (such as gypsum boards).

2. Fire Prevention and Safety: Patients and staff safety is critical in the healthcare sector. The immediate and total evacuation of healthcare buildings (particularly in patient access areas) in the event of fire may not be possible or desirable. Patients with restricted mobility cannot always be disconnected and moved rapidly without serious consequences. The principle of progressive horizontal evacuation, is that of moving occupants from an area affected by fire through a fire-resisting barrier to an adjoining area on the same level, designed to protect the occupants from the immediate dangers of fire and smoke. As per NBC 2005 (Part - 4) Hospitals under Group C-1 which is under Firezone-1, and buildings under Firezone-1 shall confirm construct as per Type-1. Type-1 constructions, all non load bearing walls should have minimum 1 hour fire rating. 3. Strength and Robustness Design (sustainability and lifecost): International standards such as BS/ASTM defines the strength and robustness of a partition. HTM 69 should be taken in to consideration when designing hospital partitions. Healthcare buildings are particularly sensitive to damage. Separating partitions in corridors for example, must endure a lifetime of impacts. Building materials in healthcare buildings are always submitted to patient, visitor and staff contact. Therefore our solutions focus on durable partitions utilising impact resistant boards to limit this issue, which in turn will reduce maintenance cost. We can provide Gypsum board solutions include systems that go from LD (Light Duty) to Severe Duty (SD) requirements. For Hospitals we recommend to go with only severe duty drywall partition systems. 4. Indoor air quality and ease of maintenance: Apart from the above performance required by the hospital buildings the focus on aesthetic, healthy indoor air quality and high quality of finish are becoming important criterias while choosing the right materials to design the hospital buildings. Unlike some conventional solutions, gypsum boards are known for being a green solution, accredited by LEED for improving indoor air quality. Also gypsum board systems have specific solutions for dust free partitions with internal round corners. Another factor that with the recent boom in this segment makes relevance is the ability to build fast and to use lighter material while maintaining low maintenance cost and easy reworkability for any future modification. Hence building materials that can provide all the above performance requirements while being easy to use, more efficient than traditionally used materials, providing better value for money with enough information support to ensure proper usage becomes an obvious choice.

What hospitals parameters have to be considered for the choice of the best building materials?
1. Acoustic: Noise becomes a health hazard when people are exposed to it in large quantities and when it becomes intrusive to an extent that patients and staff are put under stress. Staff work more efficiently, and patients may recover more quickly, if their noise environment is appropriate. Noise must be controlled in a number of ways. For example, the interior noise environment must be sufficiently insulated against local exterior noise sources. Conversely, the site must not significantly affect the exterior noise environment. In rooms where communication is important or low noise levels are essential, additional factors need to be taken into account. For example, As per NBC the wall and the partition between rooms should have min Rw- 40dB and it should be min Rw-45dB where some noisy room adjacent to that room, and for ICU Dw (Weighted Level Diffrence)of 45dB (A). It will be proprietary acoustic materials on walls may be required to ensure that speech is intelligible and that noise levels created in the room itself do not build up.

How modern building materials can be implemented under cost restrictions and tight construction schedules?
Buildings like hospitals which are being built today at a high pace would certainly find building solutions such drywalls cost effective simply for the fact that you can build 3-4 times faster than with the conventional wet constructions (bricks). Further the maintenance of partitions and ceilings done with gypsum boards are much lesser than with the use of other materials, which again is a way to reduce cost and prevent interruption during the usage of the building. There are not many building material solutions for interiors that can combine all the properties of acoustic, fire resistance and mechanical strength at the cost level that gypsum board systems provides. Lastly the weight of drywall solutions is 9-10 times lighter than conventional materials, therefore reducing the weight of the structure. Another advantage of drywall solutions are the space savings, compared to conventional construction, drywalls are taking up less floor space and that can give one more room per floor. It is for these factors that hospital chains like Max Hospitals and Medanta (Medicity) have extensively used the drywall concepts enabling a world class interiors along with meeting their tight completion schedules.

Lafarge has further developed a complete technical manual specially dedicated to the needs of the healthcare segment. This manual details all the technical systems that can be provided with our systems in order to meet the international needs of hospitals. Research in the field of drywalls has helped designed such materials that can provide superior performance (acoustic, fire and mechanical) while maintaining light weight and high quality of finish. Further constant research helps to develop segment specific products such as Anti bacterial ceiling tiles or low dust jointing compounds.

How will a hospitals of the future look like?

Hospitals are changing fast if we look at the last 10 years. The shift is from a functional building to a multispeciality modern structure that not only can provide all the required medical facilities but is also designed to provide the comfort that one can expect from a luxury hotel. Not to go on an imaginary space, atleast one point is definite that in the near future hospitals, especially in India, would become much more concerned about meeting all international standards for fire, acoustic etc and hence the choice for new building materials such as gypsum drywalls would become an obvious. Gypsum board systems for the interiors are definitely one of the best solutions that can provide all the above requirements and also bring along with itself the advantages of being green materials contributing upto 14 points to the green buildings (67 is required to be rated as a Platinum Green building). This is much higher than substitute materials such as bricks and traditional material that scores much lower and not being able to contribute much in term of green. LaGyp with its Complete Solution Approach has made it a best choice in many new segments in India such as hotels and even hospitals have started today.

How does Lafarge research center contribute to high quality building materials?
Lafarge as a building material company has the largest research center in the world. Half of the research budget is dedicated to developing solutions for sustainable constructions. For the gypsum drywall technology Lafarge has a fully equipped test laboratory equipped with high performance fire furnace, acoustic simulation chamber, test facilities on seismic simulation, mechanical tests and humidity test chambers to simulate all possible conditions adapted to buildings.

Research and development forms an integral element of our solutions to develop breakthrough insulation products focused on energy efficiency. Changing trends, shifting demands and new technologies drive our development of advanced solutions. High crude oil prices underline the increasing need to curb consumption of energy, which happens to be a major component of industry and commercial building operations. The building sector accounts for approx 30-35% of the total energy consumption in the country. According to estimates this sector alone can reduce energy consumption by at least 40% by choosing proper energy efficient equipments and thermal insulation. The resultant savings in energy cost directly benefit building owners and occupants over the life cycle of the building. As they say, energy saved is energy generated. With an eye on potential energy savings the Government has provided an energy conservation impetus through the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under Ministry of Power. Thus, BEE has issued guidelines in the form of Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) proposed for a voluntary adoption at the present stage. Energy conservation efforts have long been taken by The Indian Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE) - A society of like-minded engineers for promotion of the art & science of HVAC & R. The cause of energy savings has also been espoused by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) formed in the year 2001 to set up The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) India committee to rate buildings on environmental criteria. Another system endorsed by the Government and promoted by The Energy Resource Institute (TERI) is the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA). All these organizations and systems endorse the Energy Savings Abhiyan, which is essential for the industry and the nation as whole. Energy is the single largest operating expense and accounts for over $100 billion in expenses for commercial buildings each year. With a view to improve efficiency and enable conservation of energy, The Thermal Insulation Division of Supreme provides top-of-the-line insulation solutions with its INSU range of products. Backed by the understanding of changing trends, new-age requirements, and state-of-the-art technology, our thermal insulation division develops customized insulation solutions for various industries. Microfiber: The Superior Mopping System

Mr. Abhay Desai Director Marketing South Asia, Diversey India Pvt. Ltd. icrofiber was invented in the early 1980s in northern Europe and introduced to the world in 1986. This innovation was launched largely on account of Environmental concerns as this technology reduces the usage of clean water and less soiled water is put into the waste stream. Also the longer durability of the microfiber mop means that there will be a decrease in the solid waste from worn out cotton mops.

US alone . The costs per year for nosocomial infections since 1992 are in excess of $4.5 billion. Literature currently documents that reducing the nosocomial infection rate is supported with the utilization of a new mop in each patient room. From a cleaning perspective something as simple as always having clean water in the bucket is also more appealing to the staff, patients and visitors.

What is Microfiber?
It is a man made fiber not natural as cotton.. It is a combination of two fibers Polyester and Polyamide which is a nylon by product. The best of microfiber has 80% of polyester and 20% of Polyamide. The polyester is the scrubbing and cleaning fiber and the polyamide is the absorbing and quick drying fiber. The thickness of the fiber is 0.13 deniers which is 1/100 th of a human hair. Normally a cross section of the microfiber would reveal triangular cross-sections. These triangular cross sections result in a clean dry surface when compared to an ordinary cotton mop. For cleaning purposes the microfiber carries an electrical static positive charge that draws dirt (negatively charged) into the center where cotton carries the dirt on the outside surface. The density of this material enables it to hold 6 times its weight in water.

Microfiber v/s Cotton Top Down approach to mopping

The actual process of using the microfiber mops is a huge improvement in and by itself over the conventional cotton mop process. The Top down system actually consists of one 20 ltr Red and Blue bucket, a set of 24 microfiber mops, a Velcro frame and a suitable handle and a trolley to carry the buckets. The Blue bucket is filled with approximate 4 ltr of water and a suitable germicidal cleaning solution is added to the same. The 20 mops are placed in the bucket and it is covered with a hermetic cover and turned upside down. After a couple of hours the mops would have evenly absorbed the cleaning/disinfectant solution by osmosis. When mopping, a clean mop is taken out of the blue bucket, hand wrung out and dropped on the floor. Place the Velcro end of the mop head on the cloth and then mop the entire floor of the room with the same. To change the cloth stand on the ends of mop, pull the mop head and place it diagonally opposite on the cloth, pick it up and drop it in the red bucket. Move on to the new room and then use another fresh mop for the same. There is no refilling or changing of the cleaning solution and the soiled microfiber cloth does not go back in the clean bucket.

Why consider Alternative mopping Techniques?

Using conventional cotton loop or Kentucky mops for wet mopping of areas has long been the standard in floor cleaning for janitorial operations. However the industry has taken a recent interest in evaluating hard floor maintenance techniques in terms of employee, occupants and environmental health. To reduce the risk of cross contamination conventional mopping techniques requirejanitors to change the cleaning solution after mopping every two or three rooms meaning that cleaning solutions (including chemicals and several gallons of water) are constantly being disposed off and replenished.

At the end the soiled mops are send to the laundry for washing. Simply put the basic advantages of the top down methods over the traditional way of mopping are: 1) no wringers required 2) no preparation of cleaning solution in the ward 3) no handling of dirty solution 4) weight reduction and less stress on the labor

How does Micro-Fiber help?

How much more sanitary is it to use a fresh mop for each room? Reducing the risk of nosocomial infections in hospitals is of utmost importance. According to the CDC there are an estimated 2 million incidences related to nosocomial infections annually. There are 80,000 deaths from nosocomial infections annually ; 20,000 occur in the

LEED 2011
The latest version of the LEED rating system for India has been released by IGBC, signifying a major milestone in the history of green building movement in India. Mr Mark McCracken, Chairman, US Green Building Council and Dr Prem Jain, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council have released the LEED 2011 Rating System for India at the ACREX event. The Green Building Movement in India, pioneered by Indian Green Building Council (part of CII) has today made significant inroads. Today, India boasts of 955 buildings with a foot print of 606 million sq.ft., which stands amongst the top 3 countries to have a large green building footprint. This has largely been possible due to involvement of various stakeholders of the building sector - architects, builders, developers, manufacturers, consultants, etc.,. LEED-India, which was launched in 2007 received overwhelming response from the industry. Based on the various feedback and experiences of the implemented projects, the rating system is now upgraded and will be called LEED 2011 for India.

leed 2011 for india

The following are the major aspects of LEED 2011: Enhancement in energy and water efficiency baselines Promotes naturally ventilated buildings Encourages passive technologies In tune with local regulations and standards Adopts the latest versions of standards and codes All new projects will be registered under LEED 2011 for India. Existing projects under LEED India NC rating systems would be provided an option to transit into LEED 2011 for India, if so desired. The Abridged Version of LEED 2011 for India can be downloaded at www.igbc.in Source: Indian Green Building Council

High Green Quotient (GQ) at Godrej Interio

Imbibing the philosophy of 'Talk Green Walk Green', Godrej Interio has committed itself to manufacturing products with low carbon footprint.
To ensure that a product is sustainable, its green quotient needs to be on the higher side and for this many factors need to be taken into consideration beginning with the raw materials and up to end of life reuse/recycle/disposal. Lets take a look at what entails in the production of a green product.
End of Life Materials

Use of low impacting processes like powder coating, which is 100% VOC free, is yet another step in this direction. Powder Coating ensures minimal wastage as it gives 95-100% usage of powder. Moreover, powder coating has a relatively short cure process time thereby saving energy. In terms of performance as well, powder coat is superior to liquid film as its scratch and impact hardness is better and it also offers higher resistance to corrosion and abrasion, ensuring a longer lifespan. Packaging and Transportation Special attention is given to packaging from the design stage of the product. Almost all products have knock-down designs or have a knock-down option. Knock-down designs ensure flat packing which reduces volume of the product being transported, thereby, saving transportation fuel and related carbon emissions. Use of greener packaging materials such as corrugated paper is promoted. Environmentally hazardous materials such as metal foils, glass wool, plastic and thermocol for packaging are minimized. Products at work Indoor air quality at the workplace is a concern which is gaining increasing importance because poor air quality has adverse impact on the health of people. Low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) materials helps to reduce indoor air pollution which results in enhanced well-being and greater productivity of people. Interio has prestigious US based GREENGUARD certification for several product platforms, meeting the most stringent emission norms. Products at end of life Interios product platforms are up to 60% recyclable. Storage products made of steel are extremely durable and 100% recyclable. Intelligent designs facilitate re-configuration of products for reuse with minimum refurbishing. And now, Godrej Interio will be offering recycling services for all home and institutional products with no bar on quantity, hence closing the loop as a responsible manufacturer. With these services, GI customers will have an avenue for eco-friendly disposal of their products and hence we ensure our commitment to green throughout the lifecycle of the product. Various materials from these disposed products are extracted, recycled and put to alternate use. Environment conservation is THE way of life at Godrej Interio and our GREENGUARD certified products are a testimony to that. Its good to see that the consumer now see and believe in benefits offered by Green products and we are gearing up to come out with more eco-friendly products in near future for home and institutional space. remarks Anil Sain Mathur, COO, Godrej Interio.

Selection of Materials To reduce the carbon footprint, it is essential to reduce the usage of material overall. This is accomplished by adopting designs which are minimalistic and simple, having fewer and lighter components. In our case, the recycled content of raw materials range from 8-10% and the efforts are on for increasing it. Hazardous materials such as PVC, chrome, mercury and lead are used in minimum possible quantities. Recycled materials are favoured. GREENGUARD compliant low emitting materials are used in eight of our green product platforms namely Vurv Green, Linea Green, Stallion Green, Spacio Green, Unite Green, Ace, Kubix and Gallop. Wood substitutes like particle board and medium density fibre board (MDF) are widely used as they are made of wood particles rather than core wood. Rapidly renewable wood like rubber wood is used for some products. Metals having high lead content, for example certain aluminium alloys, are avoided as they are not eco-friendly. Steel which is recyclable is used extensively for strength and durability. Fabric such as cotton is not green as its cultivation involves high dependence on pesticides, which contaminate ground water. So instead, Interio uses pure polyester fabric which is recyclable. Eco-friendly manufacturing processes It is the processes which ensure optimum utilization of resources and materials and also prevent generation of waste. Hence, low-impact manufacturing is followed by Interio.
