1). What is induction?

Once an employee is selected and placed on an appropriate job, the process of familiarizing him with the job and the organization is known as induction. Induction is the process of receiving and welcoming an employee when he first joins the company and giving him basic information he needs to settle down quickly and happily and stars work. 2). What are the objectives of induction? Induction is designed to achieve following objectives: * To help the new comer to overcome his shyness and overcome his shyness nervousness in meeting new people in a new environment. * To give new comer necessary information such as location of a caf, rest period etc. * To build new employee confidence in the organization * It helps in reducing labor turnover and absenteeism. * It reduces confusion and develops healthy relations in the organization. * To ensure that the new comer do not form false impression and negative attitude towards the organization. * To develop among the new comer a sense of belonging and loyalty to the organization. 3). What are the advantages of formal induction? The advantages of formal induction are: * Induction helps to build up a two-way channel of communication between management and workers. * Proper induction facilitates informal relation and team work among employee. * Effective induction helps to integrate the new employee into the organization and to develop a sense of belonging. * Induction helps to develop good relation. * A formal induction programme proves that the company is taking interest in getting him off to good start. * Proper induction reduces employee grievances, absenteeism and labor turnover. * Induction is helpful in supplying information concerning the organization, the job and employee welfare facilities. 4). What are the contents of induction programme? A formal induction programme should provide following information: * Brief history and operations of the company. * The companys organization structure. * Policies and procedure of the company.

Products and services of the company. Location of department and employee facilities. Safety measures. Grievances procedures. Benefits and services of employee. Standing orders and disciplinary procedures. Opportunities for training, promotions, transfer etc. Suggestion schemes. Rules and regulations.

5). Application In IT Profiles 5.1 The HR Recruitment team advises the Head of School/Manager by email of the employees commencement date. This email will ask the Head of School/Manager to contact the new employee, welcome him/her and advise of the arrangements for the first day of employment. If the employee has not yet returned the required HR documentation, the Head of School/Manager will remind the person of the necessity to do so. 5.2 DIT delivers IT induction and provides new employees with a faceto-face session and electronic resources to help them become familiar with the CSU Information Technology facilities. Scheduled IT inductions will be held on a weekly basis at Wagga, Albury and Bathurst. It would be expected that a booking would be made by the Manager at least one day in advance of the scheduled session to give the opportunity for the session to be cancelled if there are no proposed attendees. 5.3 IT inductions will be conducted on an appointment basis at other campuses. It would be expected that Managers at these other campuses would contact the Manager, Client Services who, in turn, would endeavour to organise an IT induction within the first two (2) weeks of employment of permanent staff. 5.4 The Head of School/Manager organises the Induction & Development Program for the new employee and, in doing so, arranges DIT induction training by requesting a specified session through the DIT website. 5.5 Heads of School/ Managers may arrange IT induction prior to the issue of a Username and password for the new employee. 5.6 The Head of School/Manager ensures that basic support is provided to new employees prior to the IT induction. This is to occur within their first two (2) days of employment (ideally on Day 1) to allow

the new employee to commence his/her development programs and access Online Induction. 5.7 A flowchart (Appendix 1) summarises the steps in clauses 4 and 5 for continuing and fixed-term staff.
Division of Human Resources makes offer of employment.

New employee accepts offer of employment.

HR advises HoS/Manager of commencement date.

New employee provides personal information as requested.

Division of Human Resources enters information into Alesco system. This automatically generates a Username.

HoS/Manager arranges IT Induction and local IT support to assist new employee in the period prior to attending Online Induction.

Division of Information Technology next day creates new IT User letter and sends to workplace to arrive before employee commences employment.

New employee receives letter at commencement of employment and is asked to follow the 3 step CSU online setup procedure (which acknowledges the Policy on the Use of University Computing and Communication Facilities).

DIT provides IT induction as requested and clarifies any issues regarding the Policy on the Use of University Computing and Communication Facilities.
