Hiking

The North Coast Trail - can be accessed from Port McNeill. Drive north on Highway 19, take the Holberg Road turn off (ust south of Port Hardy), is the access point for the Cape Scott Trail, the Holberg road is a loqging gravel road so make sure you have a spare and be prepared. You then follow the road to the San Josef Bay parking lot where the trail begins. This trail takes you to the junction with the new North Coast Trailthat continues along the northern coast of Vancouver lsland, along beautiful beaches and low elevation trails through the forest. San Josef Bay - is the 45 minutes hike in the Cape Scott Provincial Park. The trail, leading from the parking lot, is basically wheel chair accessible and the beach is as beautiful as any in the park. Located near Holberg, from Port McNeill north on Highway 19, follow the signs to Holberg and the Cape Scott Provincial
Park.

SchoolHouse Creek Trail - Located right in Port McNeill! The trail head can be found to the right side of the Guide and Scout hall, just off of Broughton Boulevard. The trail is about a 15-20 minute walk through the trees. The Trail is newly reopened and is in great condition. Marble River Trail-This is a well-maintained hiking and biking trail that starts at the end of the upper loop of the Western Forest Products Recreation Site. Head in the direction of Port Alice and look out for "Marble River" signs, there will be a turn off to your right about 15 minutes down the Port Alice road. The trail is 4.2 km; average hiking time one way: 1.5 hours. This trail is in good condition, brushed and clear of all blockages.
Raft Cove Trail - located near Holberg. lsolated on the northwest coast of Vancouver lsland, south of Cape Scott Provincial Park, the wonderfully scenic Raft Cove Provincial Park is distinguished by its 1.3 km length of open beach. From Port McNeill drive north on Highway 19, follow the signs to Holberg, which will bring you to a logging gravel road so make sure you have a spare and are prepared. From Holberg head north following the signs to "Ronning 700". A recently constructed logging road has made Raft Cove accessible by a new 1.2 km route that takes 45 minutes to hike. The trail is in Good condition but wouldn't be recommended for Beginner or Novice hikers.

Cluxewe Beach Trail (Bullock's Beach) - located 10 minutes north of Port McNeill at Cluxewe Resort. Various short trails see Resort office for more details

Lady Ellen Point - near Port McNeill, the trail is located off of highway 19. From Port McNeill drive north towards Port Hardy, turn right at the second set of gravel road. About 3 kilometers later turn right onto Ledge Point Main logging road. Then, turn left onto Ledge Point 10 and drive another kilometer. Lady Ellen Trail will be located on your left; a short trail approximately 5 minutes in distance.
Sointula, the popular S-kilometer trail winds along a ridge through stunning rain forestwith periodic glimpses of the sea and coastal mountains. Beach exits and the tide give hikers the option of designing their own circuit route.

Beautiful Bay Trail

Mateoja Heritage Trail - Sointula, the 3.2 kilometer trail begins on Third Street above the town site. This trail wanders through the site of an early 1900's homestead, a marshland, skirts a couple of ponds and continues to Big Lake, the local swimming hole. Along this route there are numerous decks and benches idealfor picnics and bird watchers. This trail is an educationaltrip through the ecosystems of Malcolm lsland. Beaver Lake Trail - just of the Highway to Port Alice, from Port McNeill follow the signs to Port Alice turnoff and the first right will lead to Beaver Lake. Directly across the road is Beaver Lake Trail, a demonstration forest, with clearly marked trails and informative signs. This trail is about a half hour hike
Tex Lyon Trail - A trail, which prior to 1940 was originally the route used to get from Fort Rupert to Port Hardy, BC. The trail head is located south of Port Hardy off of Hwy #19 at Storey's Beach. The Tex Lyon Trail is a difficult 4.5 hour hike. The first 20 minutes of the hike is a walk along the sandy shores of Storey's
Beach.
