olly Beach has always come alive
in the summertime. In 1955, its
popularity far exceeded the other
Charleston beaches. Families brought
their children here to escape the heat of
the city. Teenagers, free from the duties of
school, rushed to the ocean to lie around
looking at each other.
Folly had an attraction the other areas
did not. Te dance pier, an immense
wooden structure built over the ocean,
provided a respite from the sun and a place
to enjoy jukebox music. Unlike other
public beaches in the area, Folly allowed
parking on the beach. One simply had
to drive to the end of Center Street and
down a wooden ramp. Tere was room at
high tide to park two rows deep on the
sand.
Te island also had public
transportation. Buses arrived and
departed hourly. Another attraction was
the wooden pavilion area, with its food
concessions, private changing area, public
showers and bathrooms. Tere were
lockers available where one could store
their valuables and clothes. Any type of
food was available, as long as it was either
a hot dog or a hamburger.
All were welcome on Folly Beach.

Mayors CoMMents
Mayor Tim Goodwin dedicated Aug. 24
on Folly Beach towards Surfers Healing,
a charitable foundation founded by
competitive surfer Israel (Izzy) Paskowitz,
combating autism with mind-easing
surfng lessons.
In response to Paskowitzs son, Isaiah,
receiving an autism diagnosis at age three,
the widely-recognized surfer paired his
love for surfng with a determination to
allay his sons condition. Initially placing
Isaiah years ago on a surfboards nose,
Paskowitz paddled from the rear and,
upon noticing his sons tranquil-persona
in the water, the champion surfer and his
wife, Danielle, soon began hosting surfng
camps to share the oceans healing powers
with autistic children.
Te unique, sensual healing process
rapidly seized recognition throughout
various coastal communities and, after
gaining a vast following, has swelled to
nationally-renown status.
Surfers Healing became a household
name in many coastal communities -- the
idea born from an inspiration by a father
with an autistic son grew from state to state
across the nation, read Mayor Goodwin.
Folly Beach sends its appreciation to this
organization, which has given so much
and has so little, and continues to pay
forward the benefts to autistic children
everywhere.
Paskowitz, whose son is now 20 years
old, gladly received Mayor Goodwins
reverent remarks, and credited his fellow
surfers in attendance from Puerto Rico,
Hawaii and California in carrying out
the efort. With these gentlemens help,
now we can take up thousands, said
Paskowitz, thanking the surfers for their
help in turning his dream into a reality.
Mayor Goodwin presented Sergeant
James Vincent Couche with an award
for 20 years of outstanding, continuous
service from 1991 to 2011.
Its not every day that you get to do
this, said Mayor Goodwin. Te citizens
of Folly Beach and the Folly Beach Public
Safety department wishes to thank you
from the depths of their hearts.
Gladly receiving the accolade, Couche
responded: Its been an honor and a
privilege to serve the city. Tis place
means a lot to me -- thats why Ive stuck
around. I will continue to be here for you,
for as long as you need me.

West Ashley residents Patrick Totora and
Vanessa VantHul of Savor Your City, a
Charleston-based advertising company
geared towards raising publicity for local
businesses and non-proft organizations,
requested to pitch a tent on the beach
and ofer locals free water, in an efort
to promote their business and acquire
membership signatures.
In partnership with Facebook, Savor
Your City showcases local businesses,
community events and various activities
throughout the area, and ofers members an
opportunity to receive rewards, including
redeemable coupons and gift certifcates
to support local establishments, according
to VantHul.
Were providing an online community
based on the heart of Charleston and all
of the great amenities that we have here
in the area, said VantHul, regarding the
companys initiatives. We really want to
promote and support our local economy
here, and really put our money where our
heart lives.
Totora said Savor Your City transcends
typical websites promotional practices by
facilitating user interaction. We want
people to really feel like they belong to
the community and get them involved in
all the things in that area going on, said
Totora.
Councilman Charlie McCarty inquired
about the companys business scheme,
including sponsorship, revenue and
expenditures. Tangibles said McCarty.
What are we talking about distributing
on the beach?
VantHul said the company plans on
ofering various promotional ads to support
local businesses and, in-turn, engage
residents and obtain membership. We
sell to businesses and not to the public,
said VantHul, referring to the companys
advertising revenue. Businesses and non-
profts are going to want to get in front of
our audience. We have a really attractive
and engaging reason for people to want to
come to our site -- its a great way to put
businesses in front of that audience.
Savor Your Citys sights are set on Folly
Beach, due to the islands viable market,
according to Totora.
We want to share the beauty that is
Folly Beach -- we want everybody that
lives here to know about all the great
events and everything that happens
down here, said Totora, who referred
to Follypalooza, an annual community
event, as a promotional opportunity.
Councilman D.J. Rich recommended
the representatives seek a diferent
promotional venue, and follow-up with
Charleston County Parks and Recreation,
as well as the citys Business Association.
We dont commercialize the beach --
people dont want to be bothered on the
beach, said Rich. I think what youre
doing is great, as a whole, but the beach
just isnt the place to do that.

Susan Breslin of 1115 East Arctic Avenue,
urged council members to re-commence
Christmas tree recycling along the islands
dunes. In an efort to expedite the islands
beach re-nourishment process, the city
accrued residents trees in years past and
distributed them along the islands beach
front, tucking them beneath the dunes.
Upon purchasing a beach house years
ago, Breslin said her nearby neighbors
consistently buried their trees each year
under the dunes. Tey had at least 20 of
them, said Breslin. Te dune was sky-
high.
Breslin said property was eventually
purchased near the dune, however,
bringing annual recycling to a halt.
I just want you all to know this is a great
thing, said Breslin, regarding the citys
former recycling initiatives. It works. Its
a fabulous idea.
Rich said council removed the resolution
from the meetings agenda due to requests
for further evaluation. Te city plans in
September to address the issue, however.
A lot of people have done it up and
down the beach every year, and it does
work. Youll see it coming up, so youll
get all the fner points, collection dates
and how it will work.
Rich and the citys building inspector,
Eric Lutz, plan to pinpoint beach erosion
spots in early Oct., and re-designate
spaces for trees. Were going to target the
hotspot areas and move forward with that
in the future, said Rich.

Mayor Goodwin handed out forms

seeking to fll four vacancies for the newly-
established Utility Advisory Board.

Folly Beach building ofcial Eric Lutz
and zoning administrator Aaron Pope said
they are monitoring substantially-eroded
areas along the beach, in order to further
evaluate for re-nourishment -- particularly
if Irene damages the island.
If the state decrees a mandatory
evacuation, Pope said the citys business
license program, an identifcation program
issuing valid licenses to local business
owners, will remain a priority upon
business owners return.
Hopefully that will make things a
little bit easier afterwards when we're out
checking to see whos supposed to be here
and who is not supposed to be here, said
Pope.
Public Works Director Steve Robinson
said hes backed-up the citys emergency
generators, as well as consolidated debris
removal contracts and fueled up essential
vehicles and equipment. Robinson said
hes also secured distribution system
tanks, with 350,000 gallons of potable
water stored and secured on East Hudson
Avenue.
22 years ago it was my pleasure to be a
part of recovery from Hurricane Hugo --
I learned a lot from that, said Robinson.
Im still here and I dont want to do it
again -- lets pray for steering currents.
Robinsons department is closely
collaborating with the Public Safety
Department and, if necessary, plans to
remove debris and identify hazardous
locations. Tats the frst priority -- to

can make their inspections in safety and
help the well-being of the residents, said
Robinson.
Charlie McManus, the citys fnance
comptroller, said hes working alongside
the Public Safety Department to secure
reimbursement eligibility for city ofcials,
as well as acquiring federal funding for
labor, equipment and damage costs.
A reinforced fnancial system is in
place, according to McManus, who will
hightail the city with valuable fnancial
information, including checks, check
requests and the citys payroll system, if
Irene approaches.
If the hurricane cripples the island,
McManus said hes set-aside an allowance
to pay employees, as well as for necessary
supplies.
So basically we should be happy because
youre leaving with all the information,
all the checks and all the cash, joked
councilman Paul Hume. Will we be
coming to your house for the hurricane?
My house is on the water, so it probably
wont be there, responded McManus.
Public Safety Director Chief Dennis
Brown said Public Safety ofcials are
operating on a three-tiered program to
heighten preparatory measures.
My philosophy is: we prepare for the
worst and hope for the best, said Chief
Brown, regarding preparatory tactics.
Weve been planning for this unfortunate
event for a while.
Anticipating Irenes arrival, Public Safety
is operating on the programs frst tier --
focusing on logistics to ensure adequately-
prepared personnel and sufcient
amenities are readily available, according
to the Chief.
Chief Brown said more than 20 volunteer
freman and ofcers will remain in the
Public Safety building until the Mayor
relieves the staf.
Upon Irenes arrival, Public Safety
ofcials will shift operations to the
programs second tier, and coordinate
responses based on the states emergency
level, according to Chief Brown.
Chief Brown said the city has arranged
for Charleston County EMS to store an
ambulance at the Public Safety building
and, if a mandatory evacuation is issued,
ofcers will quickly move door-to-door,
requesting residents fee the island.
We dont want folks coming out here
to put themselves in unnecessary danger
as were trying to get folks out, said Chief
Brown. We dont -- no-ofense -- want to
have a surfng competition in the middle
of a class-four hurricane.
Dear Friends and Neighbors:
Te City is right in the middle of hurricane season with Hurricane Irene knocking
on our door as I speak. Many of you who own property in Folly Beach should have
received one (1) Hurricane Pass in the mail. You will not be receiving a separate
one for each vehicle or one for each child, or one for each person living in the house.
As for renters who live year round in Folly Beach, when the island opens for citizens
to return, all they need is a picture ID (drivers license or military ID) and some
other document (lease, utility bill, voters registration, vehicle registration, etc.) to
return to the property on Folly and assess damage, if necessary.
By now, I am sure you have heard Council Member Laura Beck resigned from her
seat on City Council. Laura has served the City for a total of 10 years as a Planning
and City Council member. I thank her for her dedication and commitment to the
City of Folly Beach.
Since the next general municipal election is more than 180 days from the date
Ms. Beck resigned; it will be necessary to have the election on the 13th Tuesday.
Te date of the election and other important dates related to the election are listed
below:

Also, remember to cut of the gas at the meter; cut of the water; and the power
before you leave. If you have any questions, come in to City Hall and we will be
happy to help you.
I want to thank all the volunteers who helped with Surfers Healing and for all
those who contributed to this event. Surfers Healing had a very successful day. It
was wonderful to see these children on surf boards, communing with nature and
each other. I want to thank all of you who were responsible for recommending
Surfers Healing be held at Folly Beach. We want to wish this organization every
success in their future endeavors.
Keep safe!

Dear Editor,
Really? Ban drinking on Folly Beach?
Must we go through this every year?
Apparently, but now it seems that the Surf
Rider Foundation has thrown its hat into
the ring. Teir intentions are admirable,
but not on target. Rather, it is a knee-jerk
reaction. Yes, people who drink alcohol
on the beach litterand yes, people who
do not drink alcohol on the beach litter.
I am of the opinion that the latter litter
more than the previous. My opinion is
based on what I have witnessed here as a
boy, a young man and now a salty dog. I
am also of the opinion that Folly Beach is
funky, fun, diferent - on the edge. Do not
fool with my Folly, man! Tat, however, is
just what this annual knee-jerk reaction is
amounting to...
Folly Beach is the only public beach
in South Carolina that allows alcoholic
beverages on the beach; in a non-glass cup
of course. And it has always been that way.
Always, as in since people inhabited this
island. Well, the cup thing is a little more
recent, but a good concession. Hey, I like
this distinction, however, (enjoy a frosty
adult beverage by the ocean!) and what it
implies come as you are and have a good

During the early days of August 1955,
an out of town visitor moved into a small
cottage on Erie Street, about 50 yards
behind the police station. He paid his
rent two months in advance. He came to
Folly with a man who vouched for him
throughout his stay in the Charleston
area, Izzy Sabel, a short rotund man that
owned several nightclubs in the area,
including the Carriage House and the
Octagon Lounge, both located on Market
Street.
Tis stranger quickly settled in, keeping
to himself. He bought many household
items - a freezer, a new television, a
new washer and dryer, all paid for with
cash. He was occasionally seen with an
attractive blond woman on his arm as
they walked toward the beach or to the
pier.
Te man went by the name of Dean
- Mr. Dean. He had no car, but people
noticed that someone would pick him up
two or three times a week and take him
into town. Dean liked to gamble, so he
visited those clubs that had backroom
dealing. He seemed to have an unlimited
supply of money at his disposal. South
Carolina was a conservative, dry state at
the time and encumbered by blue laws
that prevented merchants from selling
certain items on Sunday. Gaming of any
type was illegal, but these clubs that had
the back room set ups managed to operate
despite these laws - you just pay the cops
to
look the other way.
Dean was about 57, an Irish
American from New York City. He was a
man who walked with an air of complete
confdence, but the truth was that he
had been in some sort of legal trouble
all his adult life. He worked for a family
that was heavy into the numbers racket,
as well as loan sharking. Dean became
their number one man when it came to
collections and enforcement.
When WWII broke out, Dean was
serving a prison term for armed robbery.
A judge commuted his sentence if he
agreed to join the Army. He was trained
as a rifeman and stormed the beaches of
Omaha along with thousands of other
GIs, returning from the war as a highly
decorated hero.
Dean went back to his old neighborhood
and resumed his life of crime, but this
time he stepped up to a new position in
the criminal culture, hiring himself out
as a contract killer. He soon developed a
reputation of being ruthless but reliable.
By the time he moved to Folly Beach he
had killed some ten to twelve people,
and he was well thought of by those in
organized crime who needed a job done.
Tree weeks after moving to Folly, a
group of six or seven armed men from
Savannah, Georgia and Charleston
began making discreet inquiries about
the whereabouts of this Mr. Dean. Tey
did not know him by that name because
Dean was an alias, one of many he used.
But these men had a picture of the man
they were looking for, Elmer Trigger
Burke, and they soon located the cottage
he was renting.
Tese seven men did what they had to
do and they did it with quiet efciency
so efcient that few people were aware
of their presence on Folly. But the next
days edition of the News and Courier
detailed what they had done that previous
evening
FBI Agents Seize Notorious

Burke (or Dean, depending on who
was relating the story) allowed the agents
to search his cottage. Tey found two .38

a scope), fve pairs of expensive shoes

that were bought from Dumas Brothers,
several suits and sportswear with hangers
from Berlin Brothers clothing store and
a receipt for the storage of an automobile
on Meeting Street..
After Burkes arrest the FBI agents
canvassed the area. One detective wanted
to charge Sabel under the harboring
statute, because everywhere he went,
Izzy Sabels name popped up. Sabel was
questioned for two days, and confronted
with a receipt for guns he had purchased
for Burke at a local pawn shop. Ultimately,
the US Attorney declined to press charges
against Sabel.
I was ten years old when Burke was
arrested on Folly, and I can recall reading
that article in the paper. It has intrigued
me since that time. Tree years ago, while
working on another project, I decided
to ask the FBI, under the Freedom of
Information Act, for the fles on Burke.
I received over 3,000 heavily redacted
pages and some of my questions were
resolved.
Each volume I received had a cover
sheet that said DO NOT DESTROY -
HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS. After
I fnished reading the fle I realized that
many of my questions werent answered,
and will never be.
Te newspaper article went into great
detail about why Burke was being sought
by the FBI, and the reasons were complex
as well as convoluted. Burke was arrested
on a warrant for unlawful fight to avoid
prosecution from the Boston area, as
well as a warrant for murder from New
York City. Tere were a mix of federal
and state charges and each jurisdiction
wanted him extradited to their state to
stand trial. After he was arrested, four
people from the Boston area came to
Charleston seeking his return, as well as
fve people from NYC who wanted the
same thing. Te legal scene was chaotic,
to say the least. Within fve days he agreed
to be extradited to New York City to face
murder charges.
Trigger Burkes road to Folly Beach
was a convoluted matter. It began in 1950
with the Great Brinks robbery in Boston,
Massachusetts, dubbed Te Crime of
the Century. Tis case became a priority
for the FBIs J. Edgar Hoover. But the
FBI made little progress on the case for
four years, despite a nationwide search.
Te FBI had certain suspects from the
beginning, but all had airtight alibis. Two
years after the Brinks robbery, a group of
men robbed the Chase Manhattan bank
in Queens, New York. Tey escaped with
$305,000.00 in cash. Te main suspect
in that caper was a man named Duke
Connelly. He was placed on the FBIs
most wanted list and another nationwide
search began for him.
Te original group that robbed the
Brinks company developed some internal
strife by 1954, and one of their gang
began making overtures for his share of
the money for legal fees he was facing. Te
leader of that group decided to shut him
up because he feared that this guy might
cooperate with the FBI. His name was
Specs OKeefe, a career criminal who
specialized in breaking and entering.
Trigger Burke was hired to whack
OKeefe. Burke went to Boston, located
OKeefe and tried to kill him, twice. Te
last attempt took place in open daylight,
when Burke spotted OKeefe as he was
walking to his apartment. He opened fre
with a machine gun but only managed
to wound his target. Specs was able to
identify Burke as the shooter and the
FBI questioned OKeefe again about the
Brinks caper. He refused to cooperate.
Two weeks later, Burke was arrested by
an of duty Boston detective and placed
in jail. He had not left the Boston area
because his work was incomplete. He
was charged with the illegal possession
of a machine gun. Te gun was found in
Burkes apartment and matched the one
used in the OKeefe shooting.
A week after being jailed, Burke
escaped by simply walking out of an
exercise area in the jail into a waiting car.
He quickly went underground. OKeefe,
knowing that it was his gang members
that pulled this of, contacted the FBI
and began to cooperate.
Burkes daring escape placed him in
the cross hairs of J. Edgar Hoover. He
was put on the FBIs most wanted list and
another nationwide search began. Hoover
was convinced that Burke held the key to
the Brinks robbery, as well as the Queens
robbery. Nothing developed for almost a
year despite the best eforts by the FBI.
Initially, the search for Burke centered in
New York, and this search indicated why
a visit by FBI agents can be a problem.
One of the people the FBI thought
might have information concerning
Burke was a labor boss who managed a
local ILA union. He refused to cooperate
and told the agents that he had no idea
where Burke was located. Te labor boss
agreed to inform the agent if he came
across any such information.
A week later, this union leader was
found shot to death in his ofce, and the
police found the agents card stufed in
the mans mouth. Te murder was never
solved.
However, most of the time the FBI was
looking for Burke he was safely staying
in a drop house in Boston. He left this
drop house at the beginning of December
of 1954. Sabel was a wannabe tough guy
who had contacts in New York.
It is this writers opinion that Sabel was
Trigger Burkes contact in Charleston.
Everywhere Burke and Duke Connelly
went, they were shadowed by Sabel. He
gave free access to his car and helped out
this group whenever need. He vouched
for Burke at the Darlington Apartments,
and he vouched for Connelly on the Isle
of Palms
Regardless, this is the time line
gleamed from the FBI fles.
Burke shows up in Charleston in
December of 1954 and contacts Sabel.
Te nightclub owner vouches for Burke
at the Darlington Apartments and Burke
stays there until May of 1955, when he
tells Sabel he wants to move to the beach.
Tey initially look at Folly but could
not fnd a suitable place. Sabel then
takes Burke to the Isle of Palms, and
Burke fnds a place he likes, a two-story
apartment a block from the beach. Burke
tell the realtor that money is no problem,
and pays his deposit and two months rent
in cash.
Burke is soon joined by Duke
Connelly, Dukes wife, and their two
small children, Georgie, aged two, and
Veronica, age three. Tey soon hire a maid
and nanny and buy furniture from a store
recommended by Sabel. Neither man
has transportation, so Sabel allows then
to use his Cadillac. Duke buys a fshing
boat, trailer, and other household items,

paying cash. Soon, Duke Connelly buys
a 1954 car from a person recommended
by Sabel, this time using the alias as Mr.
And Mrs. Prado.
Duke wanted to invest in a miniature
golf course in the North Area, and Sabel
steps in again as a partner and advisor. A
contractor is located, plans drawn up, and
the course is built towards the middle of
June 1955.
Burke and the Connellys begin
frequenting the Carriage House together.
Tey become known as free spenders,
tipping the band leader with $100 bills
and the waitresses with $50 bills.
During the latter part of June 1955,
Burke was involved in a trafc accident
in Mt. Pleasant, SC, and he did not have
any identifcation or license with him.
Te ofcer charged Burke with a minor
infraction and Burke called Sabel for help.
Sabel drove to the scene of the accident
and gave Burke the number of an attorney
who agrees to represent Burke because of
his friendship with Sabel. Burkes attorney
pays a $10 fne and the matter is resolved,
but Burke thinks otherwise.
Fearing that he would be identifed,
Burke and the Connelly family quickly
move from their apartment on the Isle of
Palms and disappear for a month. Sabel
has some hired hands who come to the
apartment and remove all the furniture
and appliances, including the boat and
trailer. Te FBI fles show that they all
moved to Myrtle Beach and rented an
apartment at the Cane Bay apartment
complex. Duke Connelly and his wife
were never to return.
At the end of July, Burke returns alone,
settling on Folly Beach. He is driving the
automobile that Duke Connelly bought.
Te FBI discovered this when they traced
the car storage document and saw that it
had been serviced in Myrtle Beach. Te
manager on duty at the storage building
was able to identify Burke and Sabel from
photographs furnished by the FBI.
Te manager also told the agents that
when Burke brought the car in, he noticed
blood on the back seat carpet. Te blood
had not coagulated. He also told the
agents that the right side vent window
was broken. FBI technicians searched
the car and discovered blood stains in
the front seat, front foorboards, and
rear seat. Te samples were too poor to
identify blood type, but the lab said they
were human blood stains. An FBI search
of the Cane Bay apartment uncovered
childrens clothing, as well as shell from
a .22 caliber rife. A search of the area for
bodies turned up negative, but the agents
found glass shards that matched the glass
from the automobile Burke stored.
From the newspaper coverage at
the time, one is led to believe that the
Connelly couple were murdered on the
Isle of Palms, but the FBI fles show
this was not so. Whatever mysteriously
happened to them occured in Myrtle
Beach. Tree days after Burkes arrest
on Folly, the children of the Connellys
were found roaming the streets. Georgie,
the youngest, was found on a street
Wilmington, Delaware and Veronica was
found in Baltimore, Maryland. Tey told
the FBI agent that mommy and daddy
were hurt in the back yard. Te children
were placed in the custody of Mrs.
Connellys sister in New York.
After Burkes arrest, Hoover wanted
Burke returned to New York to face
murder charges for the killing of a
friend in a barroom brawl in 1952. Te
representatives from the other jurisdictions
agreed, and Burke was escorted to the
train station by a caravan of ten cars flled
with local law enforcement people, and
handed over to New York authories.
Trigger Burke stood trial for murder
and was convicted. During the trial, he was
asked about who sent him to Charleston.
Who funded him? What hardened to the
Connellys? His short response was that
he didnt want to cause any trouble for
anyone.
If Sabel was not the contact man,
then one would have to believe that these
fugitives from justice just happened to
come to the Charleston area. If Sabel was
not the contact man, you have to ask why
he went out of his way to accommodate
Burke and Connelly.
Even after Burke returned to the area
after having been gone for a month, Sabel
helped him store the car on Meeting
Street, and then helped Burke fnd a place
at Folly. Burke, while visiting Sabels
Carriage House, received numerous long
distance calls from someone in New
York. If Burke wasnt there, Sabel took a
message and relayed it to Burke.
If Burke killed the Connellys, no one
knows why. Perhaps it was for the money
Duke Connelly had from the Queens
robbery. Burke had a reputation as being
good with kids, and many interviews in
the FBI fles attest to this. Either Burke
took them up the coast or had a friend do
so for him.
It is known that when Burke initially
came back to town, he stayed at a Holiday
Inn and had the Connelly children with
him. Tis was around July 28, 1955.
Sabel was seen coming to the Holiday
Inn on several occasions. When Sabel
was asked about this, he denied being
there, but several eyewitnesss told the
FBI otherwise.
After Burkes appeals to the US
Supreme Court were exhausted, Hoover
sent agents to ask him about the location
of the Connelly bodies. He refused to
answer, but one thing is for certain:
Somewhere along Highway 17 North,
between Myrtle Beach and Maryland, lay
the remains of the Connellys, waiting to
be discovered.

Loud Me Out Much?
On August 10 an ofcer was on patrol
near Oak Island Drive when he observed
a car crossing the yellow line several
times. Once the ofcer initiated a trafc
stop on the vehicle, a second vehicle
pulled of the highway behind him.
He then approached the driver of the
second car, asking why he had pulled in
behind him. Te driver stated that he
wanted to make sure that his friend got
home alright. Shortly thereafter, the
ofcer continued the initial trafc stop.
His instincts proved to be correct, and
after failing several sobriety tests the
driver was arrested for driving under the
infuence. BAC = 0.17. Higher than his
friends GPA? Most likely.
Preteen Behavior
On August 11 an ofcer responded to a
possible shoplifting call at the pier. Upon
his arrival, the ofcer met with a sergeant
who stated that the subject went behind
the counter and poured himself a soda.
Since the subject had no means to pay for
the soda, the manager of the store paid
for it out of pocket and requested a no
trespass notice. Te subject was issued
a trespass notice and given a citation for
presenting a suspended drivers license.
Furthermore, he was issued a citation for
failure to surrender a suspended drivers
license.
Hash, Mon.
Also on August 11, an ofcer was on
patrol at the Washout when he observed
an illegally parked vehicle in the beach
access. He then ticketed the vehicle and
went to locate the driver on the beach
front. Te driver was drinking a Blue
Moon bottle on the beach, and told
the ofcer that her ID was in her car.
Without much surprise, the girl was 19
and the ofcer found another bottle in
her car. Te ofcer asked if there were
drugs in the car. Te girl handed over
a glass bowl, which contained freshly
packed marijuana, as well as a small
amount of cannabis. Upon a further
search of the vehicle, the ofcer found a
small aluminum tin containing a brown
tar-like substance the subject identifed
as hashish. Weight of combined drugs
= 0.1 gram. She was then booked for
underage possession of beer as well
as simple possession of hashish, and
given a city ordinance ticket for drug
paraphernalia. What a huge risk for
such a little amount of brown tar like
substance.
Begging for a Ticket
On August 11, an ofcer responded
to East Ashley Avenue in regards to a
possible fght. Arriving on the scene
at Berts Market, the ofcer noticed a
white truck on the side of the building.
One of the passenger doors was open,
and a woman was standing in the door,
reaching for something in the back.
Two males that were accompanying her
told the ofcer that they had no part
in any altercation, and were on their
way to the beach. Te ofcer informed
the driver that his vehicle was illegally
parked, diagonally, which the driver
did little to correct. Since he appeared
to be under the infuence, the ofcer
conducted a feld sobriety test, to no
avail for the driver. What the woman
was reaching for was a can of Miller
Lite, which belonged to one
of the men. Te man had
a friend come pick him up,
and one of the passengers was
cited for the open container.
It Was Probably a Coyote
On August 14 an ofcer was dispatched
to the old Coast Guard base in regards to
the theft of some camera equipment the
previous night. Te victim stated that
he was out on the beach having a photo
shoot with some young women when
a storm forced them to leave. All the
participants helped lug the equipment
back to the victims car, but left a black
camera bag behind. When he returned,
it was gone. Te total cost of four various
lenses and a
camera body =
approximately
$7,800. Since
there was not
much to
work with at
the scene,
the ofcer
reported he
would follow
up with the
victim.

President Obama Installs Mirrors
On Te Debt Ceiling
WASHINGTON, DC--- White House
Press Secretary Robert Gates released a
statement today announcing President
Barack Obamas decision to install mirrors
on the countrys ever-shaky debt ceiling.
Te President made the executive
decision this morning to cover the debt
ceiling with mirror panels. Utilizing only
a miniscule amount of the budget, the
2-year project will also create 1,500 jobs
in the process, he said before elaborating
on Obamas reasoning behind the idea.
After many months of constantly
staring at the debt ceiling, he felt the need
to change things up a bit. It needs a bit of
favor, Boba dash of spice is how he put
it. Harkening back to his college days,
the President deemed mirrors to be the
appropriate spice to add.
It is widely speculated that this will be
the largest of its kind ever made, though
details on the exact size have not yet been
released. Ironically, when fnished, the
project will force politicians far and wide
to look at themselves in the mirror when
working on the countrys debt ceiling.
Tiger Woods Publicist Says Plan To
Morph Golfers Image From Wayne
Brady To Wilt Chamberlain To Steve
Urkel Near Completion
JACKSON HOLE, FLA--- A former
publicist for PGA golfer Tiger Woods
revealed that everything thats happened
to Woods over the last two years is all
part of a plan discussed and put into
action starting in early 2009, prior to his
infamous Tanksgiving car crash.
Tat was the genesis for his
transformation, she said, only agreeing
to the interview under the condition
of anonymity. Phase 1, car crash, and
the Wayne Brady image is gone. Ten
hed enjoy a year of being the Wilt
Chamberlain ladies man typethe
guy who could and would nail anybody.
Knowing he could only ride that wave for
so long before the public would turn on
him, we decided hed blow out his knee,
fre his caddy, change his swing and miss
the cut at a major tournament. If done
all in one fell swoop, we speculated his
consistent failures would bring him to the
pitiable Steve Urkel type, all but forcing
Americans to fall back in love with him.
She stated that Woods knew hed have
to change his image when his wife decided
to leave, knowing all was about to come
crashing down.
Something had to give. Unfortunately
for Tiger, it was his freakishly polite,
Wayne Brady image. Tis allowed him
a way to possibly salvage that down the
road.
She wouldnt reveal what surprises
the fnal stages of their years-long plan
contained.
Local Man Confuses
Subtitled Golf For Porn
FOLLY BEACH, SC--- Area simpleton
Alex Hunter returned home from a
months-long failed attempt to hunt down
already deceased terrorist Osama Bin
Laden. Tired and weary, Hunter decided
to spend his frst week back on the couch.
I came home deliriousI needed that
couch. But something always has to go
wrong. I turned on the TVthe volume
was broke and the subtitles were stuck on
the screenno way to get em of. And
they werent even for the right shows, he
explained, pointing to his TV while laying
on his couch.
Golf was on and the subtitles were
for some porn movie. It was absurd
they were saying things like, Look at him
puttin from the rough, Using the long
stick on the shaved surface, Hell use
wood on this hole, and His command
over his ball and club is like poetry in
motion. I couldnt believe it so I called
Comcast to make sure they werent
charging me for it. And if they were I at
least wanted to see the damn thing.
Poll Shows Roughly 12%
Of Americans Unaware
Labor Day Is Monday
SKOKIE, ILL--- A recent Gallup poll
of all Americans revealed that a striking
12.7% of citizens are unaware of Labor
Day, a holiday recognizing the countrys
workforce, this Monday. Traditionally a
holiday celebrated by the entire country,
this studys data hints at a budding change
to that trend. Interviews with randomly
selected individuals in Citadel Mall seem
to support the theory.
What are you talking about? I had
no idea it was more special than any other
Monday, said Stan Delaney, a former
longshoreman currently on an indefnite
sabbatical.
Wait, everybody is going to be of
work? asked Linda Lucarelli, on leave
from her old job in real estate sales. Ive
got plans that afternoon. Does this mean
everywhere will be fooded with people
like on a normal holiday? Are you sure?

Terrorists Scramble; New York Unsure
If 9/11 Memorial Will Be Destroyable
In Time For 10
th
Anniversary
NEW YORK CITY, NY--- Te clock is
ticking for construction crews to put the
fnishing touches on the World Trade
Center Memorial in time for the 10
th

anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy next
week.
Were just not sure if everything will
be ready in time, said a regretful Rudy
Giuliani, former mayor of NYC during
the attacks. Itll be close, and I believe
in our guys to get it done, but well see.
Only time will tell.
Te memorials lack of completion will
afect countless Americans craving closure
to the horrifc attacks. It will also be a
huge blow to terrorists everywhere looking
to make their mark that day, possibly
forcing them to seek out less publicized
buildings.
Area Chinese Restaurant Sees
Increased Sales After Guaranteeing All
Meals In 9 Minute
FOLLY BEACH, SC--- China Number
1, a local Asian restaurant, made waves
in the egg roll community recently after
promising all meals to its patrons in 9
minute.
We realized we were just telling people
theyd get their food in 10 minute for no
reasonmindlessly like dragon. Why say
10 minute when you can get it to them
quicker? said owner Mike Wong.
Wongs decision to promise meals in 9
minute has increased sales 32% in the last
quarter, while other chinese restaurants
have seen decreased sales across the board
over the same time period. So how long
does Wong think it will be before other
establishments in town follow suit?
Ehh, it be about 10 minute.

time. But, behave and show respect for
my beach, my guests and me. I will return
the favor. I refuse to change who and
what I am because you are lazy, stupid and
disrespectful (which is an apt description
of those who litter), but the rules are the
rules and they will be enforced. I love
the fact (and the law that allows it) that
I and my friends can walk out to our
lovely beach with an adult beverage in
hand and not have to worry about being
ticketed or arrested. My usual late evening
beach-going group not only doesnt litter,
but we make it a point to bring back the
randomly discarded water bottle or can,
food wrapper, broken fip-fop/beach chair,
abandoned toy or foatation device. It is
a fuzzy, warm feeling. Tere are easy to
access recycle bins and garbage cans at
every beach access. Try the fuzzy, warm
over the lazy, stupid. You will like and be
proud. Pack it in, pack it out.
Tis may sound draconian (especially
coming from a salty dog Folly democrat),
but if you litter on my island and are
convicted, here should be the outcome: 1.
If you are a visitor, be it from Jamestown,
South Africa or day tripping from James
Island, South Carolina, you are fned as
much as the law allows and forever banned
from Folly Beach. Forever! 2. If you are
a resident of Folly Beach, you are fned as
much as the law allows and must do 24
hours of community service (pick up litter)
every week until you move away or die. If
you move away, you are banned forever.
Again, forever! Mmmmm, if my thinking
was truly draconian, resident litterbugs
would simply be hung from city hall and
left to rot. But I digress.
Te Isle of Palms (IOP) won the highly
coveted lowcountry award last year: Most
Littered Beach on July 4
th
. Te IOP does
not allow the drinking of adult beverages
on the beach. Period, nada If you
have the misfortune of frequenting IOP,
Sullivans or some of the similar beaches
such as Kiawah or Seabrook, then you
know that the ofcials at these beaches
utilize an iron fst (sans the velvet glove)
when enforcing the law. Te alcohol ban
on the beach did not work. Did the IOP
have more visitors than Folly? Did a New
Jersey garbage barge wash up on the IOP?
Or, did the litter from Folly Beach wash
up on the IOP? Im guessing the answer
to all the above is a No. Lazy, stupid and
disrespectful beach goers simply left behind
their trash. Were they drunk? Dunno, but
I do know that the alcohol ban there was as
useful as George Bush Jr. in a think tank.
In summary, here are a few of the many
things that attract folks to Folly Beach
(residents and visitors alike): beautiful
dawn to dusk views, the vibe, the music,
the dancing, the weather, the fshing,
the funky houses, the funky characters,
the cuisine, the history Also on this
list, and what has made so much of it all
possible, is the tolerance. I will not go into
a rant about displaced Yankees, Ohioans
or Florida half-backs, because many of
the aforementioned have acclimated quite
well to Folly Beach and are good citizens,
but there are a few who lets just say, lack
tolerance. As a consequence they are tying
to fool with my Folly, man! Dont do
that! Folly is my home, and I chose it
as a home because I like it and what we
Follians have here. If you dont like it,
move. I refuse to change not only who I
am, but also, what Folly has always been,
and God willing, what it will always be.
Granted, my knee may jerk from time to
time, but I choose to not let my emotions
over-rule my intellect. I believe in Folly. I
believe in tolerance. Te scourge of litter is
not the freedom to have adult beverages on
the beach, but the curse of the stupid, the
disrespectful, and mainlythe lazy.

H
urricane Irene came to town this
week. With it came swarms of surfers
riding boards that were brand new,
boards from the Nixon administration, and
everything in between. A major storm of
this type will always produce swell. If the
storm stays far away, the waves will have
a long period, clean faces, and extra large
height. Tankfully, this storm did little
damage to the Lowcountry. However, it
did bring big, thumping surf.
Te weather made national news all
week. Hurricane Irene spent Monday
through Wednesday in the Caribbean and
anyone with a television, computer, or shiny
rock knew she was coming. We all spent
the frst half of the week bracing for this
storm. Whether you bought bread, rum, or
a six-foot thruster, you prepared to hunker
down and wait out the storm. Long period
swell started hitting the beaches. No real
increase in the size of the waves occurred
at this time, yet there was suddenly more
power in those two footers. Due to my
incredibly busy schedule, I was only able to
surf at low tide. Since it was the middle of
the week, the lineups were not yet packed.
Good news came on Wednesday and we
learned that Irene would not make landfall
in the Lowcountry.
No landfall meant that major destruction
was of the menu for Folly Beach. However,
wind, rain, loss of power, and hurricane
parties will be served whenever hundred
mile winds skirt the coast. Whether it was
your plan to eat, drink, or surf your way
through the storm, you could not help but
notice the buzz around town. Tursday
morning, the surf was stomach high and
clean. Te Washout was not too much fun
since the waves were dumpy and closing
out due to the low tide. I opted for the less
popular Ninth block break and realized that
forty or so of my friends had the same idea.
Te surf was fun and everyone I talked to
was real stoked. Tese were healthy waves,
but even a pig that was trained by a spider
could tell you that the waves would get
much taller and powerful.
As the sun got higher, a veritable Noahs
Arc of surfers swung by the store and bought
some kind of three-fnned shortboard
known as a thruster. Tese short, skinny
sticks are the surfboards of choice when
things really get pumping. All day I heard
how good the waves were getting larger and
cleaner and that Oprah might give Buicks
to everyone who visited the shop. When
six oclock struck we lit out of work like the
Stones were in town. Te West side of the
Folly Pier looked beautiful, with six footers
lining up like corduroy as far as the eye
could see.
Friday brought huge waves to Folly
Beach. Te surf was well-overhead with
clean faces. A crowd gathered at the
Pier to watch the memorable rides and
huge wipeouts. We lost power for most
of the day, and Center Street was closed
for several hours while SCE&G brought
us back into the twentieth century with
lights, air conditioning, and rechargeable
toothbrushes. Tere was nothing to do but
surf and be thankful that Irene did not hit
the Lowcountry.
Saturday saw four-foot barrels at lower
tides with clean conditions prevailing
for much of the day. Everyone surveyed
the damage at the beach. Damage was
minimal, but pieces of several walkovers
could be found at the Washout. As the day
got later, the tide flled in and brought big
sloping rollers. It was the fnal day of great
surf from Irene. All that is left now is to
hear everyones hero stories. Be good and
have a great day.

block and East Arctic (It was
even a What the Folly photo back in
January!). But theres more growing here
than just pretty blue glass.
Vivian Whorley has worked as a
horticulturalist with the monks at
Mepkin Abbey for over eleven years.
Once known for raising chickens, Mepkin
Abbey recently began trending away from
horticulture, while expanding their oyster
mushroom cultivation business.
Although Whorley enjoyed the work
at the Mepkin Gardens, slowing her work
there opens the door for the possibility of
a new personal venture; one that wouldnt
require her to drive three hours a day.
Really, she wouldnt have to leave the
island often at all.
At her home, Whorleys keen green
thumb rubs of on even the most out-of-
place plant life. In her organic garden, she
grows lettuce, herbs, fruits, and vegetables
year round. Te herbs and lettuce utilize
a hyrdoponic drip system that operates
of of a 55 gallon trash can full of water
and nutrients. Strolling about her garden,
it seems as if everything in site is edible.
Teres the typical basil, thyme, and
cilantro, but the not-so-typical loquat
as well. Most herbs, kale, and chard are
rather bitter during summer, but Whorleys
Valencia orange tree is beginning to bud.
Tis is a good sign. Herbaceous plants are
amongst her specialty, but she doesnt stop
there.
When she moved into the home, the
yard was almost completely granulated
sand, maintaining almost no vegetation.
Tis was 15 years ago. Trough her
consulting work, she was able to pick up
a few trees people were giving away. In
a very careful manner, and against the
Atlantics saline breeze, she has grown
several very prosperous trees.
Te Elderberry tree seems to be one of
her favorites.
Running 100 proof vodka over some
blossoms, and straining it into a solution
over about six months will make tincture,
she explains. A few drops of that in water
can help with any illness. Its anti-biotic,
anti-fungal; I mean, it will cure anything.
She even has a small date tree in her yard,
which is very out of place.
Whorley makes good use of her masters
degree in horticulture from Virginia
Tech. Along with business partner Donna
Baccirini, Whorley hopes to soon begin
working with local restaurants. Te two
have dubbed the business Lowcountry
Herbs.
Baccirini recently completed a two-year
program to become a certifed herbalist.
She will head up the business end of
things, while Whorley will be busy in her
garden.
We would love to have a system in
place where the restaurants could let us
know what they need on Mondays and
Tursdays, placing an order, explains
Whorley. Were also looking into the
possibility of lotions, soaps, and other
herbal remedies for residents aches and
pains.
Whorleys son, Graham, calls the yard
Folly Beachs Garden of Eden.
Te garden is heavily guarded, however.
Kevin the Cat, and her dog, Sara, take
shifts warding of moochers.

Te Honey Hours
Golden times shine, free passes and wind chimes.
Te eyelids rise with the sun, going surfng, sailing some. Switch boards
and feel alright. Ridin, ridin, ridin, into the night. Over by the pier, a scene
is here. Helicopter overhead and police boats, searching for bodies out of
their view. Tanks for the spotlights, shocka bru. Its nine thirty, the fery
rock in the sky fell, and a blue full moon comes out as well, and Im still in
the water, feelin swell.

Cravings for the Cave
Gazing the saltwater sun dyed eyes of into the northwest horizon. Do I
honestly ride a bike that far? Ten miles even looks impossible, but looks are
deceiving. Black clouds above the white city lights. Chasings of the waves,
chasings for the waves. Cravings of the cave, cravings for the cave.

Early before dawn, I met a man with dark skin and thick dreads. He said
the sun and the moon tell him the meek will rule the world. In his culture
it was New Years. It almost seemed like the rising sun was dancing with
the fading stars, as the fute he played made the yellow snake rise, slither its
tongue, and spit its golden rays of saliva across a dim glowing purple sky

So what is darkness? Darkness on the outside is only physical. If you paddle
out at night, dive underwater, and still feel as relaxed as you did on land,
you obtain a true sense of peace - one type that speaks from the heart,
makes the soul listen, and the brain agree.
