Client Advocate Guides AWC Clients

Parenting Program Assists Young Pregnant Couple

Womans Concern has been blessed to hire Terri Hershey as our new parttime Client Advocate. This newly-created position has allowed AWC to offer pregnancyrelated services to an increasing number of women seeking our assistance. With the addition of Terri, we have added an additional afternoon office shift. We are making plans to add yet another shift to our office hours in the near future. Terri is the mother of three children (Alex, Nick, and Emma). Terri and her children reside in Strasburg. She enjoys decorating, blogging, Bible study, and gardening. She has a strong commitment to the value of all human life and eagerly offers a sympathetic heart to those clients struggling with an unplanned or challenging pregnancy. Welcome Terri!

ancy, age 16, and her 16-year-old boyfriend, Joe, came to A Womans Concern early on in her pregnancy. They came looking for help and guidance. Their counselor explained our parenting program to them. She encouraged them to enroll so that they could begin to understand the importance and responsibility of raising their baby. The couple was open to and excited about the parenting classes and the chance to earn Baby Dollars for items like car seats, cribs, strollers, diapers and essentials for their baby. Nancy has been coming faithfully to her parenting classes, and has earned a considerable amount of Baby Dollars that have been used to prepare for the baby. As happens with so many of our young clients, Nancy and Joe have since broken off their relationship. Joe occasionally comes to the class, but he is visibly withdrawn. Nancy lives with her mother but their relationship is not always a healthy one. There is a lot of arguing between Nancys and Joes families.

New Ultrasound Machine Saves Lives!

Board News

hrough the generous funds provided by the Knights of Columbus Pennsylvania State Council and the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council, A Womans Concern was able to purchase a brand new ultrasound machine. Our existing machine was over ten years old and in need of replacing. The ultrasound service that we provide to abortion-minded clients literally saves lives by allowing the client to view her developing baby and begin the mother-child bonding process. By using ultrasound technology, over 95% of our abortion-minded clients decide to give their unborn babies life! We just cannot thank the Knights enough for giving us this life-saving gift!

L S

ourdes Vasquez recently joined the board of directors of A Womans Concern. We are excited and honored to announce this recent addition. Lourdes will bring much to the board in terms of wisdom and experience working in the Lancaster community. Welcome Lourdes!

Its a Womans Choice! Really?

ixty-four percent of women in a 2004 study reported feeling coerced and forced into their abortions. One study showed the leading cause of death among pregnant women is homicide. In India and China, the preference for sons over daughters coupled with Chinas one child policy and forced abortions, have led to gendercide, sex selective abortion of over 100 million girls. This problem is present in the United States as well among Chinese, Korean, and Native Americans.

Parenting Program, continued from page 1 . . .

Their counselor has been encouraging them to communicate and work hard to get along for the sake of the baby girl that is on the way. They talk about putting their daughter first and making decisions based on what is best for her and not the two of them. Nancy and her counselor have also spent time talking about abstinence and making good relationship choices in the future. Nancy has recently expressed that she plans to establish herself and her daughter before she even wants to consider having a boyfriend again. Her counselor has encouraged her to save herself until she is ready for marriage. Nancy is not sure she is able to do that but she is very attentive to their conversations. This week when Nancy attended class alone she was visibly frustrated with Joes lack of attendance. After spending a considerable amount of time talking with her counselor she decided to put aside her anger towards him and purchased some baby items for him to use at his home. She enjoyed spending her Baby Dollars and feeling like she was choosing kindness over anger. Nancy enjoys coming to her parenting classes. She told her counselor that others have questioned why she needs to come to them, but her response is always that she enjoys them and knows she needs to educate herself on things she has never been taught before. Nancy plans to continue with her high school education. She realizes that it will not be easy for her to do, but she has set her mind on graduating for the good of her daughter. She is thankful that she is eligible to continue to come to A Womans Concern until her daughters first birthday. The support and love that she has encountered during her time here has allowed her to dream big dreams for her future.

Tip On How To Argue Your Pro-Life Position

hances are, if youre reading this newsletter, you are pro-life and believe in the value and sanctity of human life. Following is one short acronym (SLED) that you can use to present your pro-life position that relies on nothing more than common sense logic.

S Size: Yes, embryos are smaller than newborns and adults,

but why is that relevant? Men are generally taller than women, but physical size doesnt equal value. Level of Development: True, embryos and fetuses are less developed than you and me. Should older children have more rights than their younger siblings? Some people say that self-awareness makes one human. If that were true, newborns would not qualify as human beings. Environment: Where you are has no bearing on who you are. Does your value change when you cross the street or roll over in bed? Location cannot change the essential nature of the preborn from non-human to human. If the preborn are not already human, merely changing their location, moving them eight inches down the birth canal, cannot make them so.

D Degree of Dependency: If viability makes us valuable

human beings, then all who depend on insulin or kidney medication are not valuable. Conjoined twins who share blood type and bodily systems would also have no right to life. In short, although humans differ immensely with respect to talents, accomplishments, and degrees of development, they are equally valuable because they share a common human nature. Just a Blob of Tissue

imple tissue does not have a beating heart, brain waves, fingerprints, or unique DNA. Medical science shows that human life begins at fertilization. The development of a human begins with fertilization, a process by which the spermatozoon from the male and the oocyte from the female unite to give rise to a new organism, the zygote. After fertilization, nothing new is added to the baby except oxygen, nutrition, and time.

Very Interesting
Countries with laws restricting abortion have the lowest maternal mortality rates. Ireland has laws restricting abortion and also has a maternal mortality rate of 1 death per 100,000 live births, the lowest in Europe. The United States, with abortion on demand, has 11 deaths per 100,000 live births. On January 22, 1973, abortion was legalized in the U.S. through the 9th month of pregnancy for any reason. In the United States, white women are 61% of the female population and account for 36% of all abortions, black women are 14% of the female population and have 30% of abortions, and Hispanic women are 15.8% of the female population and have 25% of abortions. A whopping 8,369 late-term abortions (later than 21 weeks of pregnancy) abortions were performed in the U.S. in 2006.
