GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS! How to succeed in class: 1. Come to class prepared every day.

Take notes and be attentive during classroom sessions. Do your homework. Study for your tests (before the night before). Participate in everything that occurs in class. Demonstrate the appropriate behavior and attitude at all times. Be a responsible, respectable, and respectful young person. 2. Be kind. How to fail class: 1. Poor attendance. Not being attentive. Not doing your homework and assignments. Not studying for tests. 2. Not completing the research papers. *Grades are earned, which means you can earn an A or an F. My Classroom Rules Be Respectful and Kind. Be Prepared and Ready to Learn. Be Responsible for YOUR Attitude and Actions. Raise your hand for permission to speak or to get out of your seat. Follow ALL rules set forth by the school. My Classroom Procedures 1. FIFO Rule, which applies to stocking food products and starting class! First in. First out. This means - be IN your assigned seat and take OUT your materials for the class. Every day you will have a First Thing assignment. Check the agenda written on the board. 2. Make-Up Work If you are absent, remember to turn in your note to the attendance office after being signed by the teacher. All worked given during unexcused absences may not be made up and may receive a failing grade. If a worksheet (w/s) was handed out, look in the make-up work folder for the worksheet with your name on it. 3. Make-up Tests It is your responsibility to schedule a make-up test with me within 10 days of returning from an excused absences. Any test given during unexcused absences may not be made up.

4. In-class Assignments Most days we will do a little bit of literature, grammar, and writing. Not everything is for a grade; sometimes it is just for enrichment or for application. You should still do your best on everything. All projects and essays will be graded using a rubric. All essays, papers, etc. are to be typed in Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced with the appropriate APA heading: Every class session we will have Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) for 20-30 minutes. This is a grade. If you do anything other than read (write, sleep, talk, etc) you will receive a zero for this grade. You may read any novel of your choosing. Be sure your novels are school appropriate. You will complete novel projects throughout the year using your chosen novels. Following your SSR time you will complete a Reading Checklist. All written responses are to be in complete sentences. Failure to do so will result in a zero. If you do not use a complete sentence for your answer, I will not read it and you will receive a zero. The Research Paper It is mandatory that you write an APA research paper. Your paper will be a literary analysis of an short story or poem. (Specifics will be shared later in the year.) If you plagiarize or turn in a previously written paper, you will receive a ZERO for the paper, which counts as 500 points. If you do not include parenthetical citations and a works cited page, you will receive a ZERO. You must complete the preliminary aspects of the research paper, specifically the hand-written rough draft, in order to turn in the typed final draft. 5. Homework You should plan on homework (writing, reading, or grammar) just about every night. If you are absent the day homework is due, it is your responsibility to turn it in. Homework and Assignments How to turn it in All in-class assignments and tests are to be collected by the teacher. 6. Help! If you need assistance during class, please raise your hand and wait for me to acknowledge you. Dont shout my name across the room. If youd like to contribute to the class discussion, which is highly encouraged, please raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged.

If we are in the middle of a lesson, please wait until the lesson is over to ask to leave to use the restroom. 7. Restroom Passes You will have three (3) passes for the month. Use your time between classes to go to the restroom. In the restroom is the appropriate place to groom yourself as well NOT IN CLASS. No applying perfume, lotion, cologne, body spray, etc. in class. 8. Class interruptions I may answer the class phone and I may answer the door. You are to remain on task and quiet while I am on the phone or speaking with a visitor at the door. 9. Cell phones Cell phones in the classroom are not for personal use. 10. Book bags, purses, and jackets are to remain underneath your desk or on the floor. Only educational materials are to be on your desk. NO FOOD OR DRINK IN MY CLASSROOM! Additional procedures you need to know 1. Use blue or black ink pens on tests. If you use another color pen or pencil, I may not be able to assess your work. All hand-written assignments should contain your name, the date, the class, and the assignment in the upper right hand corner. All assignments are due on the assigned due date. Late assignments will result in a zero. 2. I will only accept loose leaf paper NO SPIRAL EDGES on anything handed in. 3. **All rules according to the school's Code of Conduct apply in this classroom. No chewing gum, avoid profanity, no eating or drinking, keep your hands to yourself, and be on time. Grades Test = 40% Daily/Homework = 50% Binder Checks/Journals/Reading = 10% Comprehensive Final = 20% of overall grade. ALL STUDENTS IN ALL CLASSES WILL TAKE FINAL EXAMS. NO EXEMPTIONS! Supplies needed for this class A 3-ring binder with pockets Loose leaf paper (spiral cannot be turned in) Pencils Blue or black pens

One red pen for editing Highlighters Post-It-Notes USB Flash Drive (recommended or a Dropbox account) Copy Paper (1 ream) Wish List Hand Sanitizer Facial Tissues Disinfecting Wipes Post-It-Notes Construction Paper Art Supplies (crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue, tape) Consequences to your actions: Three Strikes and You are Out Inappropriate behavior results in the following hierarchy of discipline: 1. Verbal warning and reminder of appropriate behavior Detention Parents called 2. Written up and turned into an Administrator Five-Second Rule during group work, or if the class is too loud, I will implement my 5-Second Rule, which means you have until I count to 5 to be quiet and pay attention to me. Last, but not least: 1. Everything on the back desk is for teacher use only. I have provided a table of supplies (stapler, tape, hole punch, tissues, hand sanitizer, pencil sharpener) for you on the front table. *KEEP IT NEAT. Keep the classroom neat. The desks are to be straightened before you leave. Dont leave any trash on the floor. Take all of your belongings with you. At all times you need to remember that this is my classroom and we are here to learn. If that is not your purpose, you will be disciplined. I thoroughly enjoy the fact that my students are different from one another and from me. You are each unique and special in your own way. That is something to be respected and admired. You should always remember this. Do no talk while I am teaching, another student is talking, or you are supposed to be working on an independent exercise. I dismiss you, not the bell. Do not pack up your belongings to leave until I dismiss you. 2. NO SLEEPING!
