Greetings in the name of our Lord, December 7, 1941.

Its hard to believe that just the mention of a date can bring up so many emotions, so many memories. As you know this date stands in infamy because of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The world was now at war. September 11, 2001 is another date that lives in infamy; another date that stirs emotions and difficult memories. It is another set of horrific events that has pushed us into war. As much as we remember the specific date, I feel, many have forgotten about the war or that it has become every day news. This year marks the 10th anniversary of September 11th and by no means should we ever forget that day. The church should lead the way in remembering, but we should also lead the way in working towards peace. I hope you will join the faith community of Ocala on Sunday, September 11th at 7:00PM at First Congregational United Church of Christ on SW State Road 200 for a "Service of Memory, Hope, and Light." This will be a great way to honor those who have fallen and a positive witness in a world filled with anger and tension. I will never forget where I was and what I was doing on 9/11. I will never forget the uncountable sacrifices the men and women of our nation made that terrible day, and since. Let us, as a church, honor their memory by leading the way towards peace. We should join together with the community of interfaith believers on Sunday the 11th and pray fighting around the world will end, and that all nations and faiths will join hands and honor our creator by working for peace in every aspect of our lives so that a December 7th and a September 11th will never happen again. Blessings,

CONGREGATIONAL CARE

Thank You
We greatly appreciate the gift of a beautiful new wrought iron bench placed within the front garden entrance of Fort King Presbyterian Church. The gift was given by a friend of our church family to honor her beloved sister, Susan S. Paulsen. Thanks be to God for families, friends, and gifts that help us remember God's love for each of us!

CONGREGATIONAL CARE (continued)

Thank You
Thank you Gwynn Pealer for doing such a fabulous job with securing refreshments for the multiple memorial receptions we've, unfortunately, had to host in the last few months. I'm certainly not excluding a big thank you to all those who volunteered to bring sandwiches and other goodies. Plus, another thank you to all those who helped with the set up for these receptions. Carol Slemmer's was one of the biggest I've been involved in. With the help of the volunteers, all went well. The participation from the congregation is a testimonial to the generosity of the wonderful people in our Church. Maria Madigan

September Birthdays

DISCIPLESHIP
Greetings! I am writing this letter as our children and youth embark on their first day of the school year. Our children and youth will be passing through many doors today. Some doors they will pass through for the first time and I can only imagine the emotions that the parents must be feeling as they accompany their children to the first day of kindergarten. I can almost feel the nerves myself of the freshman as they learn their way around new hallways. Other doors will be quite familiar as I can sense the excitement of the fifth graders as they are now the leaders of their school. As they pass through these doors, familiar and unfamiliar, I pray for their year. I pray also for those who will be passing through our own doors whether it be for the 100,000th time and for the first time. As we enter into a new program year renew your commitment to learning and growing in faith. Join us Sunday mornings for Sunday school and encourage your youth to join us for PYC in the evenings. Commit to a mid-week Bible study. God of doors and homes, bless this community - this year and every year. Bless all who come and go through our doors, both those who are seasoned worshippers and those who are visiting. May all who enter through our doors come in peace and bring joy. May all who come through our doors find welcome and love. May the love and joy in this community overflow and spread into the community and the world. Amen.

Our church family has been so blessed recently with a number of births. This is great news! These beautiful new additions mean a few more children in our Church Nursery on Sunday mornings so we need your help. We need you. We are looking for more nursery volunteers during the worship hour on Sunday mornings. You will not be alone, our professional care giver, Tammy Keeslar, will be with you and guide you. If you are interested in helping care for these beautiful bundles of joy, please contact Gouley Andrews at 368-9612.

Library Corner
You have surely heard the expression variety is the spice of life. Well, if you want to spice up your life, come see the wide variety of new material in the church library. Thanks to generous donations of books by members and their families, as well as a few specific book purchases, the shelves are brimming with everything from biographies to mysteries to Christian fiction; books on spiritual growth, Bible study, and health; nature, travel, politics, and history. Lots of American history! Lucille Rowoldts son gave most of her personal library to our church. Lucille especially liked reading American history and had many good books about the founding fathers and the early days of the USA. She would be pleased to know that others are now also enjoying some of her favorite books. Something else new is the Mobile Library cart which displays a different selection of items from our library each week. You can check out items right there at the cart. Look for it on Sunday mornings. Since it is mobile, it moves around! The library is open Sunday mornings from 9:00 to about 11:45, or at least 15 minutes after the end of the worship service. Come see whats new.

We need the help of all the women of the congregation and look forward to more participation to provide the mission of this organization. Please call Anne Hill at 368-2491 and lets discuss what part you would like to play in helping. Let us all be about the work that we have been called to do!

Rape Crisis Center Mission

As you are on your travels remember to save your personal size items from motels (shampoo, conditioner, soap, shower caps, etc.). These are perfect for the Rape Crisis Center as people come in with no personal care items. Please put them in the box in the Narthex. Thanks for thinking of those in need. Presbyterian Women are in the process of making individual tote bags for the women that come into the Rape Crisis Center. We will fill them with shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, brush and comb and many other toiletry items that may be needed. If you would like to help with this project, please contact Anne Hill at 368-2491 or talk to any member of a circle.

Craft Bazaar
Presbyterian Women continue to work on projects for the Craft Bazaar to be held October 22, 2011. Thank you to all of the Crafty Ladies that work each week to provide crafts for our bazaar and to all of the ones that are working at home to help with this fund-raising project.

We hope to begin our volunteer work in late September or early October once the necessary forms are completed. What a great opportunity to serve God by assisting those who have the great responsibility of educating Gods most precious gift to usour children. Please fill out the form below if you can help and return it to the church office or place it in the offering plate. Please contact Harvey Bohner (622-1333) if you have any questions or concerns about this project.

WORSHIP

Choir
Fall always brings changes weather, new classes, new friends, etc. If a change of perspective during worship is something that you have been thinking of, come and find a seat in the choir loft. We practice from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights and warm up at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings for worship.

How Great Thou Art

It was an English missionary named Stuart K. Hine who brought How Great Thou Art to the attention of the world after he heard it on his travels through the Ukraine in the 1930's. His conjecture was that the song, originally attributed to a Swedish divine, Carl Boberg, found its way there in the repertoire of traveling penitents who sang pious anthems as they wandered from place to place. Hine translated the text and notated the music from memory. Both resemble to some degree a sacred song, The Almighty, written nearly a century earlier by Franz Schubert. How Great Thou Art has become universally familiar and beloved mainly because of its being part of Billy Graham's Crusade music. More than 150 recorded versions existed as of 1974 in an extraordinary range of devotional styles.
