AFTERMATH

Air Combat

At precisely 09:00 (local time) on 8 May, six Navy A-7 Corsair IIs and three A-6 Intruders from USS Coral Sea entered Haiphong harbor and dropped 36 1,000-pound Mark-52 and Mark-55 mines into the water. They were protected from attack by North Vietnamese MiG ghters by the guided-missile cruisers Chicago and Long Beach and by ights of F-4 Phantoms. The reason for the precise timing of the strike became apparent when President Nixon simultaneously delivered a televised speech explaining the escalation to the American people: "the only way to stop the killing is to take the weapons of war out of the hands of the international outlaws of North Vietnam." The mines were activated ve days after their delivery in order to allow any vessels then in port to escape without damage. This is a great scenario for four to six players; six players is optimal as it Date: 9 May 1972, 0900 hours allows each player to run two aircraft (2 for the A-6As). Location: Haiphong Harbor, North Vietnam. History: On 9 May 1972, CVA-43, USS Coral Sea, launched three A-6A SCENARIO SET-UP Intruders loaded with mines in support of the mining operation directed (45 by 30 hexes) against Haiphong Harbor. The A-6 flight led by the CAG, CMDR Roger Sheets, was composed of USMC aircraft from VMA-224. Flights of F-4B Phantom IIs flew cover against North Vietnamese MiGs. Conditions: Visibility: 16; Sun: Edge 2 Edge Edge CAB: LOW and SURFACE LOW 2 1 Clouds: Table Clouds: The N. Vietnamese player may place 6 x 6/TAL1-6 LOW CAB; Cloud Border: Bottom of LOW CAB. North Vietnamese Orders: Achieve more victory points than the opponent. The N. Vietnamese player receives an additional +2 VPs for Edge each F-4B shot down by a MiG-17F (The VPAF can brag about the Edge superiority of their MiG-17F) 3 4 US Orders: Achieve more victory points than the opponent. Each A-6A that delivers its mines in the Sea Mine Area receives +2 VPs. NORTH Game Length: No limit.

1. The US A-6As all start carrying 4 sea mines and are in a single two plane formation. 2. The US F-4Bs are in 2 two plane formations. 3. The sea mine target area is in the area displayed on the map. The A-6As will use the Area Target modifier to determine successful deployment of sea mines. 4. The A-6As carry a heavy bomb load, one ECM Pod (-1) and are considered full-load. The F-4Bs carry 2x AIM-9Ds and 4x AIM-7E-2s. 5. The MiG-19s carry 2x AA-2, and start as hidden aircraft. 6. Fighting Wing: While in formation (both pairs of F-4Bs), only the lead aircraft may fire missiles. In order to plot a move which would break formation it must pass a crew check.
