Unit 1 Week 3 How You Grew

MONDAY: 8/29/11 (8:30-10:00) Warm up: (vocabulary, phonics, pa) Do Rainbow Words activity. Morning Message: (vocab, fluency, comprehension) Write morning message on chart paper:
I want to be in the big circus. I want to sit on an elephant. I want to pet its gray skin. I want to feed the monkey bananas. I bet that monkey would grin. He may try to give me a kiss! I want to run with the clowns. I want to jump up and down and spin with them. It would be a hit! Everyone would cheer for us!

Echo read the morning message. What happened in this little story? (sequence)

Word Families: (vocab, phonics, pa) Intro to word family words (-it, -in, -iss) Find the word family words in the morning message. y Circle it family in blue y Underline in family in purple y Circle iss family in red Do word family sort as whole group. Phonics Time: (pa/phonics) Point out short i words in the morning message. Ask for the Tucker sign for short i. Read words aloud to students on pg 67C-D, 67K. Tell students to raise their hand if they hear the short i sound in the words. Write the same words on the board/chart paper. Ask students to sound words out with Tucker. Is it a short i word? Word Wall Practice: (vocab, fluency) Read I Am a Big Kid pg 68-69 as intro to words of the week. y Ask students to read the highlighted words. Write them on the board. Discuss words. Have each student make a sentence with the words. Assessment: (pa, phonics, vocab, comprehension) Do WBO17 and18. Setting? What happened in the beginning? Middle? End? Word Wall Practice: (vocab, fluency) Look at morning message. Have students help remember which words are the words of the week. Then make a green square around the words of the week. Begin word study booklet (if time) Word Families: (vocab, phonics, pa) Review the weeks word familes Do Word Family Sort activity (individually) Phonics Time: (pa/phonics) Review sound and Tucker sign for short i. Make short i words on the board. Have students come up one by one. Change initial and final letters and have students read it with Tucker signs. Setting? What happened in the beginning? Middle? End? y Draw a picture of what happened in the story. Word Wall Practice: (vocab, fluency) Look at morning message. Review words in green squares. Continue and finish word study booklet Phonics Time: (pa/phonics) Review sound and Tucker sign for short i. Letter tiles. Have them spell short i words.
