FIBRE CEMENT MAIN HEADER SLATE TILES

Jewson provides fibre cement slates from all major suppliers. The table below shows the equivalent tiles of two established suppliers in this market. Because of interpretation of the latest British and European standards there may be slight differences in number of slates per square metre required by manufacturer. However, the table shows the approximate average that is generally acceptable. There may also be slight differences in acceptable roof pitch/batten gauge by certain manufacturers depending on the severity of conditions. The table is intended as a guide for quantification purposes only and more detailed information can be obtained by contacting the specific supplier.

NATURAL SLATE TILES

Jewson offers a wide range of natural tiles to suit all requirements. We have different textures and colourways from Wales, Spain, Brazil and China. All our slate is provided by leading-name suppliers, including Spanish Slate Quarries, Independent Slate Supplies and Cembrit Blunn. The quality of slate can vary enormously, but there are two main grades: First/Premium, which comes with a 50-year guarantee, and Standard/Economy, which has a 30-year guarantee. Some suppliers even offer a higher-grade slate with a 75-year guarantee. Prices obviously vary according to grade and quality. We recommend you view our slates before ordering our roofing experts will be on hand to help you decide. All Jewson slate conforms to the latest industry standard BSEN 12326:2004. As slate is a natural product, some tiles may be a different thickness within the same load. It is therefore necessary to sort slates before work begins.

NATURAL SLATE TILES

HOW TO WORK OUT THE NUMBER OF SLATES YOU NEED Most slates are supplied pre-holed at either 75mm or 100mm headlap. This page will help you determine which headlap and how many slates and battens per square metre you require. The map shown opposite indicates which parts of the country are exposed to moderate or severe weather conditions. Use table 1 to establish the minimum headlap you will require based on the pitch of your roof, and whether your roof will be exposed to moderate or severe conditions. The headlap this gives you is the minimum required. You will need to select the slate with the pre-holed headlap over this minimum e.g. 30 roof pitch in moderate exposure requires 80mm headlap. By rounding this up the 100mm pre-holed slate would be required.
Table 1 ROOF PITCH 40 35 30 27.5 25 HEADLAP - MODERATE EXPOSURE 60mm 70mm 80mm 85mm 95mm HEADLAP - SEVERE EXPOSURE 80mm 90mm 100mm 110mm 120mm

an 7m2/sec an 7m2/sec

Table 2 can then be used to establish the quantity of slate and batten required based on the slate size and headlap. To work out the batten gauge, follow the calculation below: Length of slate headlap = gauge 2

PITCHED ROOFING ACCESSORIES

In order to provide a weatherproof junction, a complete range of universally designed, high performance valley troughs for tile or slate roofs is available from Jewson. Each product is for use with roofs constructed in accordance with the relevant requirements of BS5534: Part 1: (Slating and Tiling) and BS8000: Part 6: (Workmanship on Building Sites). TILE VALLEY TROUGH A high quality valley trough for use with both interlocking and plain tiles. Pronounced upstands and wider secondary drainage channels provide extra protection against water penetration and mortar blockage. The two firmly bonded sanded strips allow strong mortar adhesion. SLATE VALLEY TROUGH Designed for use with natural or man-made slates. Profile allows slates to be laid evenly in conventional manner except that slates do not need to be bedded with mortar, but can be laid dry.

PITCHED ROOFING FELTS

BREATHABLE MEMBRANES
Pitched roof ventilators are used when continuous eaves or ridge line ventilation is not available with proprietary product, or for use with mechanical extraction units for kitchens/bathrooms or soil vent stacks. COLD ROOF No ventilation of the roof space is required if using concrete, clay or natural slates. No counter battens are required when the underlay can drape between rafters. WARM ROOF No batten cavity ventilation required if using concrete, clay or natural slates. Counter battens are required, however the underlay can be laid on top of the insulation or over the counter batten so the underlay can drape between battens. HYBRID WARM ROOF No ventilation under or over the underlay is required if using concrete, clay or natural slates. No counter battens are needed if the underlay can drape between rafters (hybrid partial fill), counter battens are needed on full fill applications or where a drape in the underlay can not be maintained.
Manufacturer Brand Tyvek Monoperm 700 l Permo RoofTX Cold Roof Warm Roof Hybrid Roof BBA Certified

BONDING STRIP An effective method of jointing adjacent roof slopes, whether of similar or different materials ie slate and tile (not suitable for use with Cambrian Slates). Features a firmly bonded sanded strip to ensure strong mortar adhesion. SECRET GUTTER A high performance secret gutter for use with all flat interlocking tiles. Acts as a secondary line of defence against wind driven rain at a vulnerable point on the roof. Anti-capillary rib stops water tracking back into the roof space. Manufactured from UV stabilised PVC.

STANDARD FELTS
JEWSON 1F Jewson offers the traditional BS 747 type 1F undertile felt, which is available in 15m x 1m rolls. Where standard 1F felt is used provision should be made for the introduction of mechanical ventilation. Please refer to pages 32-35 for more information.

VENTILATION
INTRODUCTION TO VENTILATION
Ventilation is required within roof construction in order to control condensation within the building envelope this is documented in BS5250:2002. Detailed below is a basic guide to the standard.

VENTILATION
LOW LEVEL EAVES TO EAVES VENTILATION
OVER-FASCIA VENT
Used where the fascia board is fitted to the ends of the rafters, creating a situation where ventilation can only be affected over the top of the board. Suitable for new build and refurbishment situations.

STANDARD DUO PITCH ROOF OF 15 PITCH AND ABOVE REQUIREMENT:

10mm continuous opening at eaves, with additional high level ventilation of 5mm for pitches over 35 and or spans over 10m.

EAVES FELT SUPPORT TRAY

The Eaves Vent Protector is used to overcome two problems associated with using traditional bitumen based roofing felt. These are perishing and cracking at the point where it is dressed into the gutter, and water collecting between rafters and the rear of the fascia board.

LEAN-TO OR MONO PITCH ROOF OF 15 PITCH AND ABOVE REQUIREMENT:

10mm continuous opening at eaves and high level ventilation of 5mm.

ROLL FORM EAVES VENT

This provides a very economical and convenient solution to the secondary eaves ventilation. This product ensures that a ventilation channel at least 25mm deep is maintained between the insulation and roofing felt. Supplied in 6m rolls to be rolled out along the rafters and nailed or stapled into position.

EAVES COMB FILLER DUO PITCH ROOF OF 15 AND ABOVE, WITH DIVISION WALLS REQUIREMENT:
10mm continuous opening at eaves, with a 5mm continuous opening immediately below, and 10mm continuous opening immediately above each division wall. The Eaves Comb Filler prevents the entry of birds and rodents beneath profiled roof tiles.

CONTINUOUS SOFFIT VENT

Use where soffit board follows underside of rafters Sloping Soffit Vent also available

DUO PITCH ROOF, WITH CEILING AND INSULATION INCLINED REQUIREMENT:

25mm continuous opening at eaves, with additional high level ventilation of 5mm either side of the ridge line.

PUSH IN VENT
Mainly used in refurbishment Convenient for use in existing board Provides 1600mm2 of free airflow

ESTIMATING GUIDE FOR A GABLE TO GABLE ROOF

CALCULATING PLAIN ROOF TILES
1. Calculate the roof area Multiply the eaves length (a) and the verge length (b) to get the total area of a roof slope, and multiply by two to get the total area of the roof in square metres. 2. Calculate the number of plain tiles required for the roof Multiply the total roof area by 60, the number of plain tiles per square metre and round up to the nearest full tile. 3. Allow for wastage Minimum wastage should be calculated at 5%. 2086 (a) x 1715 (b) = 3.578m2 (one roof slope) 3.578m2 x 2 = 7.16m2 total area 7.16m2 (area) x 60 (tiles per m2) = 429.6 = 430 tiles 430 x 5% = 21.5 21.5 + 430 = 451.5 = 452 tiles

CALCULATING TILE AND A HALVES FOR A PLAIN TILED ROOF

Fig. 1 (NOT TO SCALE)
1. Calculate the number of courses Dividing the verge length (b) by 100mm, the approximate maximum gauge of a Plain Tile, will give the number of tiles up the roof slope, known as the number of courses. The resulting number should be rounded up to the nearest full tile. 2. Calculate the number of tile and a halves A tile and a half is needed in every other course at the verge. The easiest way to work this out is to allow one per course on one side. This automatically allows for a tile and a half to every other course and for both roof slopes on the roof. 1715 (b) = 17.15 = 18 courses 100

CALCULATING INTERLOCKING ROOF TILES

1. Calculate the number of tiles across the roof Divide the eaves width (a) by the width of the tile from the data tables (e.g. Double Roman Tile = 298mm). Round this up to the nearest full tile. 2. Calculate the number of courses up the roof slope Find out the maximum gauge of your selected tile from the data tables (e.g. Double Roman Tile = 343mm). Divide the verge length (b) by this number. 3. Calculate the number of interlocking tiles required for the roof Multiply the number of courses by the number of tiles across the width of the roof and multiply by 2 for both sides of the roof. 4. Allow for wastage Minimum wastage should be calculated at 2.5%. 2086 (a) = 7 tiles across roof 298

18 courses x 2 verges = 36 tile and a halves

1715 (b) = 5 courses 343

7 x 5 = 35 tiles 35 x 2 = 70 tiles

CALCULATING EAVES/TOPS TILES FOR A PLAIN TILE ROOF

1. Calculate the number of eaves Take the eaves length (a) and divide by the width of an eaves tile. 2. Calculate the number of eaves tiles Multiply by 2 for both sides, and multiply by 2 again for the ridge. 2086 = 12.64 = 13 eaves 165mm 13 eaves x 4 = 52 eaves

70 x 2.5% = 1.75 1.75 + 70 = 71.75 = 72 tiles

ESTIMATING GUIDE FOR A GABLE TO GABLE ROOF

CALCULATING BREATHABLE MEMBRANES
1. Identify overlap required From table 1 below identify the required overlap based on your roof pitch.
TABLE 1
ROOF PITCH OVERLAP (mm) 12.5 to 14 225 15 to 34 150 >34 100

ESTIMATING GUIDE FOR A GABLE TO GABLE ROOF

CALCULATING UNDERLAY (FELT)

Roof Pitch = 12.5 to 14 then overlap = 225mm

1. Calculate the square metre area of one slope Multiply the eaves length by the rafter length. 2. Calculate the total roof area Multiply the area of one roof side by 2. 3. Calculate the number of rolls of underlay To work out the area of underlay required, simply divide the total roof area by the net coverage of a roll, 1 roll of underlay 1F (15m x 1m) = 12.50m2 (This allows for 2.5m2 of waste and overlap per roll), and then round up to the next full roll.

2086 (a) x 1715 (b) = 3.578m2 3.578 x 2 = 7.16m2

Side lap should always be maintained at 100mm. The above minimum overlaps are all in accordance with current B.S. and European Standards. A standard 5% wastage factor should always be allowed for after your calculation. 2. Identify coverage of a 50m x 1.5m roll From table 2 below identify the coverage you require according to your overlap.
TABLE 2
OVERLAP (mm) COVERAGE (m2) 75 71.36 100 69.86 150 67.36 225 63.62

7.16 (roof area) = 0.57 = 1 roll 12.5 (roll cover)

Overlap = 225mm then coverage = 63.62m2

CALCULATING UNDERCLOAK (FIBRE CEMENT STRIP) REQUIRED

1. Calculate the total verge length The verge lengths must be equal to the rafter lengths. There are four verges to this roof area so multiply the verge length by 4. 2. Calculate the number of undercloak strips Divide the total verge lengths by 1.20m or 2.40m, depending on the length of the undercloak strips available, and round up to the nearest strip. 1715 (b) x 4 = 6.86m

3. Calculate number of rolls required to cover your roof Divide the total area of your roof by the coverage from a single roll. 4. Allow for wastage Minimum wastage should be calculated at 5% and rounded up to the nearest roll.

7.16m2 = 0.11 63.62m2 0.11 x 5% = 0.1 0.1 + 0.11 = 0.12 = 1 roll

6.86m = 5.71 = 6 strips 1.2m or 6.86m = 2.86 = 3 strips 2.4m

CALCULATING BATTENS
1. Calculate batten required for one side of the roof To work out the amount of batten required, multiply the number of courses by the eaves length. 2. Calculate total batten required For both sides of the roof area multiply 10430mm x 2 (roof sides) and round up to the nearest metre. 3. Allow for wastage Minimum wastage should be calculated at 7.5%. Interlocking Roof Tile 5 courses x 2086 (a) = 10430mm 10430 x 2 = 20.86 = 21 metres

CALCULATING RIDGE TILES

1. Calculate the number of ridge tiles Ridge tiles are half round, angle or universal and 457mm in length. To work out how many are required, divide the length of the roof by 457mm then round up to the next full ridge tile. 2086 (a) = 4.56 = 5 ridge tiles

CALCULATING INDIVIDUAL UPVC DRY VERGE UNITS

21 x 7.5% = 1.58 1.58 + 21 = 22.58 = 23 metres Allow 1 unit per course of tiles up the rafter/verge. Allow 1 stop end starter unit per first course up the rafter/verge. (These units will either be universal or sold as left/right hand units.)

CALCULATING CONCRETE CLOAKED VERGE UNITS
This product is an actual standard tile made with a cloak as an all in one tile. Allow 1 unit per course of tiles up the after/verge. (These units will be sold as left/right hand units.)

PITCHED ROOFING INDICATOR

The table below can be used to calculate the length of the rise, hip or valley on a pitched roof.

CALCULATING BASIC EAVES TO EAVES ROOF VENTILATION (Low level)

You will need four items namely: 1m x 10mm fascia vent. Simply divide the total eaves length of the roof by 1m to give you the number of fascia vents required. 6m roll form eaves vent. Simply divide the total eaves length of the roof by 6 to give you the number of roll form eaves vent required. 1m eaves protector/felt support tray. This product performs a dual function of protecting the felt from exposure to the elements and simultaneously allowing the felt to remain supported. Divide your eaves measurement by 1m to give you the number of eaves protectors required. 1m comb filler. This is needed on profile tiles to prevent birds/vermin from entering the roof space. Divide the eaves measurement by 1m to give you the number of comb fillers required. See page 33 for further information on low-level eaves ventilation.

CALCULATING RIDGE VENTILATION (High level)

In roofs over 35 and/or 10m span, it is necessary under current regulations to introduce an airflow into the building at eaves low level. It is, however, necessary to allow the exit of that airflow at the ridge i.e. at high level. Jewson can supply various designs of ventilated ridge systems. Jewson can also supply universal ventilated ridge systems which can be used with most types of tile and/or slate product. See pages 34/35 for further information. Please note these systems still require the concrete/clay ridge tile. Individual tile/slate vents can be purchased to introduce ventilation into irregular roof elevations. Soil and vent tiles/slates can also be purchased for mechanical extraction for kitchens and bathrooms.

IMPORTANT
Remember: if you are refurbishing, you must ensure that existing timbers have sufficient strength to support new roofing material. Additional timbers may be required and specialist advice should be sought before work is carried out. Please ensure adequate mechanical fixing of the slate or tile. Specialist advice can be sought from the supplier. In normal circumstances all products must be fixed in accordance with BS 5534 2003 and always in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Any Jewson branch will supply you with the contact details of the manufacturer and inform you of the information the manufacturer would require in order for them to produce a fixing specification for the roof works for your building.
54

Using this table: Identify the pitch of the roof Read across the table to find the calculation factor for the measurement you require i.e. rise, rafter or hip/valley Multiply this factor by the run Example 1 To find the rafter length on a roof with a 22.5 pitch and a run (or half span) of 4.8m: 4.8m x 1.08 (factor from table) = 5.18m rafter length Example 2 To find the hip/valley length on a roof (or half span) of 7m: 7m x 1.53 (factor from table) = 10.71m hip/valley length
