ExecutiveSummary
Background
TheHRServicesDivisionoftheTexasAssociationofSchoolBoards(TASB)conductedasurveyof
CarrolltonFarmersBranchIndependentSchoolDistrict(CFBISD)employeesinFebruaryof2011
attherequestoftheDistrict.Thesurveywascomparedtotheemployeesurveyconductedby
TASBin2010withtheresultsofthe2011surveybeingconsistentwithorbetterthanmost
opinionsreflectedinthe2010survey.
Thepurposeofthesurveywastoassessemployeeattitudesandsatisfactionwiththeirjobsand
workconditions.Surveyinformationwillbeusedtoassistdistrictleadersinunderstandinghow
employeesperceivespecificissuesandrevealingthegenerallevelofjobsatisfactionamong
employees.
TASBHRServicesdevelopedtheonlinesurveyincollaborationwithCarrolltonFarmersBranch
ISD.Whenthesurveyquestionnairewasfinalized,HRServicessentanemailtoCFBISDstaffwith
internetaccessrequestingtheirparticipation.ThedistrictdistributedpapersurveystoCFBISD
staffwhodidnothaveinternetaccessatwork.
Someresponseswerecombinedforpurposesofanalysis.Forexample,StronglyAgreeand
Agreeresponseswerecombinedtoindicateapositiveresponse.
Thesurveyincluded14categoriesofquestionstogatherdataaboutthefollowing:

Participation
AllCFBISDemployees(3,251)wereinvitedtoparticipateinthesurvey.Atotalof2,560
employeescompletedandsubmittedquestionnaires,yieldingaresponserateof79percent.
Employeesfromallworklocationsandjobtypesparticipatedinthesurvey.Thelargestemployee
grouprespondingtothesurveywastheteachergroup,comprising54percentofthetotal
respondentsandrepresenting84percentofallteachersemployedbytheDistrict.Thelargest
groupofteachers(26%)hasfromonetofiveyearsteachingexperienceandthelargestgroupof
theoverallsurveyparticipants(40%)hasworkedforCFBISDfor10yearsormore.

MajorFindings
Overall,CarrolltonFarmersBranchISDemployeesrespondedfavorablyregardingjob
satisfaction.Theyindicatedthatthemostimportantcontributorsleadingtotheirjobsatisfaction
were:meaningfulworkandsupportfromcoworkers.Nearlyallemployeesliketheworktheydo;
understandwhatisexpectedofthemintheirjob;andfindtheirworkmeaningful,satisfying,and
challenging.Mostemployeesindicatedtheywouldrecommendthedistrictandtheircampusor
departmenttoafriendasagoodplacetowork.Thevastmajorityoftheparticipantsfeltthatthey
havethesupportoftheircoworkersandthereisasenseofcamaraderiewithintheirworkgroup.
Acrosstheboard,employeesexpressedsatisfactionwiththeirworkingconditions.Morethan90
percentofthosesurveyedindicatedthat:theyfeelsafeattheirbuilding;theirworkareawas
clean;theyhaveadequateequipment,tools,andsuppliestodotheirjob;andtechnology
resourcesareavailableandwellsupported.
Employeesweregenerallysatisfiedwiththepayandbenefitsofferedbythedistrict.Somework
groupswerelesslikelythanotherstoagreethattheyarepaidfairlyandcompetitively.
Districtcommunicationsreceivedhighratingsfromallemployees.Morethan95percentof
CFBISDemployeesindicatedthattheyareabletofindoutthethingstheyneedtoknowtoget
theirjobdone.Eightfivepercentofemployeesaresatisfiedwithdistrictcommunicationsabout
theannualbudget.
Employeesgavehighmarkstotheirsupervisor.Mostemployeesreportedthattheyreceivethe
trainingtheyneedtodotheirjobeffectivelyandtheyareallowedtomakedecisionswithinthe
scopeoftheirauthority.
Inresponsetoaseriesofquestionsrelatedtotheserviceandsupporttheyreceivefromvarious
departmentsintheDistrict,respondentsreportedthattheHRDepartmentstaff,theBusiness
Officestaff,Technologystaff,andCurriculumandInstructionstaffarecourteous,respectful,
knowledgeable,andhelpful.Teachersindicatedtheyweresatisfiedwithserviceandsupportat
boththedistrictandcampuslevels.
Employeesoverwhelminglyagreed(99%)thattheyhaveaccesstoreliablecommunication
technology.
Morethan90percentoftherespondentstakeprideintheperformanceoftheircampus,are
satisfiedwithcampusofficesupport,andfeeltheirprincipaltreatsthemfairly.
Onlyteachersrespondedtothequestionsregardingcurriculumandinstruction,teachersupport,
andstudentdiscipline.Teachersstronglyagreedthattheyarechallengedtobeeffectiveandthe
instructionalprogramattheirschoolenablesstudentstomastertherequiredTEKS.Teachers
alsoagreedthattheirprincipalsetsandmaintainsbehavioralstandardsandtheygetappropriate
assistancetoresolvedisciplinaryproblemsintheclassroom.
Commentswereprovidedby22percentofthesurveyrespondents.Fortysixpercentofthe
commentswereaccoladesforthedistrictasawholeandforindividualemployees.Participants
offeredawiderangeofcommentsthataresummarizedinthereport.
