Performances for Families

Chico Performances 2011-2012 season is filled with magnificent performances fit for the entire family. Your children will fall in love with these exciting and entertaining acts. With so much variety all year long, it wont be easy to choose just one! This year Chico Performances begins their family season with an eclectic assortment of energetic performances. On Aug. 27th, the Hawaiian Jimi Hendrix Willie K. will re-awaken the halls of Laxson interchanging sweet island sounds and major rocking power chords all night long. His onstage banter will have your family clutching their sides while his warm spirit brings a little bit of paradise to Chico. Another lively performance will come from Metales M5 (Sept. 13th), a brass quintet straight from Mexico. This upbeat concert is sure to peak your childrens interest as they witness serious and classical pieces transformed into fun brass with lots of style. Blue Room Jr. brings a talented group of student performers to Laxson (Oct. 5th) where they will take your family on a journey. Into the Woods is an eccentric fairytale featuring all of your favorite charactersCinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and many others. For families looking for that uplifting, cultural performance, you will have anything but slim pickings! Creole Choir of Cuba (Oct. 25th) and Tao: The Way of the Drum (Feb. 9th) will both deliver a powerful show celebrating their roots through traditional music and choreography. For education with an entertaining flair, the Banana Slug String Band will deliver on Dec. 14th. The science lesson wont seem like one with such an interactive performance geared to boost that holiday spirit! Another classic ballet, Alice in Wonderland will be at the theater for an entire weekend (Dec. 9th-11th)! This ballet performance will take your family on a whimsical adventure weve all come to know and love. Sensational stunts and fantastic feats will hit the theater beginning Sept. 16th with the National Acrobats of the Peoples Republic of China and again on Jan. 18th with the renowned Peking Acrobats. Theyll have your family on the edge of their seats as they observe the acrobatic skill and artistic grace of these young troupes. In contrast to the brilliant acrobatic shows, on Feb. 23rd Luma Theater will use an eccentric black light show to create a contemporary circus of illuminating theatrics. Keeping Dance Alive showcases the finest dancers, choreography and musicians of the North Valley in a two-day dance concert (Apr. 6-7). This eclectic group has everything from ballet to hiphop and much more! The Harlem Gospel Choir (Apr. 11th) will have the entire audience foot-stomping and hand-clapping as they spread their message of love and joy in this evening of entertainment. Later (May 9th), Americas Favorite Cowboys Riders in the Sky, will fill the stage with their comedic antics and melodic harmonies. This dedicated quartet of musicians will utilize their Woodys Roundup to introduce your children to some fun country music they are bound to enjoy. On May 16th, Playhouse Youth Theatre brings the endearing musical Annie Jr. to Laxson. Your children will enjoy following orphan girl Annie in her search for a forever family. To save money on tickets, be sure to take advantage of our Make-A-Series deal and save 10% on most performances. For parents, you can save $50 on childrens tickets when they join the Chico State Kids Club! Membership reduces admission to family shows to only $8 per child! The Chico State Club is underwritten by Edward Jones Investments. For more information on family performances, Make-A-Series and Kids Club Membership, visit www.chicoperformances.com.

Into the Light Exhibition

The Janet Turner Print Museums first exhibition of the 2011-2012 season, Into the Light, features unique and seldom seen works from three campus collections the Turner Print Collection, the Department of Arts Ira Latour Visual Resource Center, and the Meriam Library Special Collections. Into the Light, which runs August 22-September 24, shines a spotlight on unique works that do not always fit thematic exhibitions, have been rarely shown, or do not have a venue to exhibit in on a regular basis, noted Catherine Sullivan, Curator of the Turner, and one of three people who selected works for the exhibit. In addition to Sullivan, artworks were selected by Erin Herzog, Curator of the Ira Latour Visual Resource Center, and George Thompson, Library Specialist in Special Collections. Each selected works from their respective collections. Sullivan, with Janet Turner Print Museum Collection Manager Adria Crossen Davis, made the final selection of which works would be shown. We looked for some resonance between the individual material and a reflection of the overall theme of exhibit, the unexpected, said Sullivan. The works that ended up making it into the exhibition are collectively an eclectic group, to say the least. Various art mediums relief, digital, lithograph, serigraph, photolithograph, mixed media, sculptural objects, artists books and portfolios and audio works are represented. Works include Canadian artist Marcel Dzamas The Cabin of Count Dracula from the Ira Latour Visual Resource Center; a 16th century German bible by Heinrich Bunting with inventive hand-colored relief maps, courtesy of the Meriam Library Special Collections; and Cuernavaca, a 3-D abstract kinetic work from the Turner Collection, an agamograph, created by the man who invented this unique art form, Israeli artist Yaacov Agam. Other unusual works from the Turner include a collagraph block by the late Dr. Janet Turner, hand cut Japanese stencils for obi printing, and examples of pochoir, a stencil process that predates screen-printing. Sullivan said the many different kinds of works in the exhibition will appeal to people who appreciate sculpture, conceptual art, satire, printmaking, mixing printmaking with other concepts and techniques, book lovers and modern art.

1820 Oro Dam Blvd., Oroville 532-1090

This is our first exhibition of the academic year. It demonstrates how artists envision the use of printmaking as a multiple media and it explores printmaking resources from three local collections. There will be a talk and reception for Into the Light on September 9 beginning at 5 p.m. at the Turner. A select number of prints from the Turner Collection that expand on the Into the Light theme will also be displayed in the Ayres Hall, first floor cases on the CSU, Chico campus. Turner Print Museum Graduate Curatorial assistants Chelsea Gilmore and Ruby Rudnick curated this exhibition. The Turner is located in the Meriam Library at CSU, Chico, adjacent to the Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology, and is open M-F from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call Sullivan at 898-4476 or visit the www.janetturner.org. Groups and classes can call to make arrangements outside the public hours. The website has a section for class application for docent tours and related activities. This form should be submitted prior to visit to ensure a productive and educational visit. Please note that the Normal Avenue Parking Lot, located across from CSU, Chicos Performing Arts Center, is closed while construction commences on a new parking structure; parking is available near the Meriam Library on nearby Chico streets and also at adjacent Chico State parking lots.

Public Health Helping to Reduce Hepatitis C

For the past year, Butte County Public Health has been providing education and free hepatitis C (HCV) test kits to residents of drug treatment and homeless facilities. The purpose of the Spread the Word, Not the Virus program, funded by the Sierra Health Foundation, was to identify HCV cases among high-risk populations, and help those infected to get followup testing and treatment. Residents of local drug treatment facilities have rates of Hepatitis C (HCV) infection that are much higher than those of the general population, according to Ellen Michels, Health Education Specialist and coordinator of the program. Local statistics were compiled after the year-long program ended on June 30th. Approximately 7.5% of the people tested were positive for Hep C, stated Michels. Thats almost four times higher than the infection rate of the general population, which is estimated at 2%. An additional 7% of the treatment facility residents were already infected with HCV prior to the start of the program, bringing the total infection rate up to 14.5%. HCV is a blood-borne virus that causes scarring to the liver (cirrhosis) and can cause liver cancer. Most new infections are among injection drug users, due to sharing of needles or other injection equipment, but the virus can be spread through any type of exposure to someone elses blood. The blood supply was not screened for HCV until 1992; many people may have been infected through blood transfusions prior to that date. Other risk factors include having a job that might expose you to someone elses blood (such as a worker in public safety or health care), and having tattoos or piercings that were not done in a safe manner. The majority of people infected with HCV are unaware of their infection, risking long-term health problems and possibly passing the virus to others. Our goal with this program was and is to identify cases of HCV infection among highrisk populations so that we can get people to medical care and stop the spread of the disease, stated Michels. All persons testing positive for HCV were referred to Chico or Oroville Family Health Centers for further testing and possible treatment. The standard treatment of interferon and ribavirin, along with the addition of two recently approved new drugs Incivik and Victrelis, can bring about a cure in up to 80% of persons infected with HCV. Prevention of HCV means avoiding any contact with someone elses blood: Do not share needles or works (cookers, cottons, ties) used to inject drugs, hormones, steroids and vitamins. Do not share any personal hygiene items that might contain traces of blood, such as razors, toothbrushes, nail clippers or pierced earrings. Cover any personal items and keep them separate from other people you live with. Make sure tattoo and piercing equipment is sterile. For a tattoo make sure that a new needle and inkpot is used for each person. For a piercing make sure that a new needle is used and that the package that contains the needle is opened up in front of you. Cover any open cuts or wounds. Sexual transmission is low, but the use of condoms or barriers will help reduce the risk even more. A mother can transmit hepatitis C to her baby during pregnancy or birth, but this doesnt happen very often. Make sure that in healthcare settings standard safety precautions are being carefully followed. Although the Spread the Word, Not the Virus funding has ended, the department is committed to continuing to educate the public regarding this disease. The Public Health Department purchased additional HCV test kits with the remaining grant funds, and will continue to provide HCV education and test kits for those in high-risk settings, while supplies last. Anyone interested in scheduling hepatitis C education and testing at their facility should contact Ellen Michels at 5387044 or emichels@buttecounty.net.

ANTIQUE TOOL TALK # 56

Well folks, today I want to bring you up to date on some exciting donations, etc, that have come in to your Bolts Antique Tool Museum. There have been so many we cant begin to list them all but will discuss a few 1. We have mentioned in the past that we had a major Barb Wire collection being donated. Well it is here, over 230 different samples of barb wire. Ken Lenke, Scottsdale, Az. Made the donation, including all books, reference material, etc. He not only donated the collection but paid all shipping cost. The rst 6 panels approx 24 x 30 with 9 to 11 wires on each was mounted and ready for display. Then came the loose wires, all tagged for identication and inventoried. Kens Brother Ralph, who lives here, took on the job of securing the material, building the display panels and mounting the wires. We now have a total of 22 panels, ready for labeling (temporary displayed in Area C), etc. More on that project in another story. 9. In Area F we now have a large quantity of antique Auto and Truck Repair Manuals. These have been donated by Frank in Durham Chuck from Triple S Tire and LeRoy in Tucson, Az. 10. Then we have hand made Brace Sockets donated by a gentleman in Omaha, Nebraska and a display from Greg & Cornwell tools, Akron, Ohio It goes on and on every day here is like Christmas. Its 10:00 a.m. and havent had a donation yet today. A week or so ago, we had 5 people in with donations before Noon all on the same day. Our building is lling fast and we now have over 8,000 items on display and I see that Russell has inventoried in 4 more groups yesterday, so will be displaying some of them later on today.
