One Laptop Or Personal Computer To Aid Their Learning In The Classroom?

Computer is a technology that is used by people for doing work, play games, connect to the world wide web server or network and other uses. While laptop is an innovation of the present computer. It is portable and have the same function as the common computer. Nowadays we can see that every family in our neighbourhood have at least one personal computer or laptop . So in other words, a computer or laptop now cannot be put aside in our daily life. It is now can be considered as one of the needs of modern people today. We can also say that computer or laptop can be important in every school especially secondary school. I used to study in my former school at Sayyidina Othman Tutong Secondary School to finish my A Level Course. Most of the time we use computer to aid our learning. Some of my friends also brought their laptop for doing some class presentation. I personally found that with the uses of computer or personal laptop in our studies, it can help us to learn more about our selective syllabus. So I came to a conclusion that why can every school, especially secondary school be provided with computers or laptops in each of the classroom. I said these because of the following reasons. Firstly we talk about internet. It is a network of networks. It provide network access from other computer or servers carrying various information and services. Internet messaging, electronic mail, file transfer, video conferencing and other documents of the world wide web are examples of the services we can get from the internet. We use computer or laptop to connect to the internet using telephone lines or wireless connection which is so common nowadays. Internet provides connection to various websites. There are many useful websites that can be used for extracting facts and informations for certain subjects. So in other words, internet can be one of their up-todate textbooks for students. In our local university library for example, has the database of some books and articles. It can be viewed by accessing the homepage of the library, http://library.edu.bn. An example of website that provide database is http://www.cjstor.com. Besides that, students can also search facts about the past. Want to find about Antartica? Who was Americas first president? The history of mankind? All this can be found in the internet. Thus internet can also enchances learning process. With the best search engines available such as Google Search, Yahoo Search and Microsoft Service Network (MSN) Search, students are able to find massive amount of materials for their learning. For example Geography, there are lots of animations and

descriptions about things like the formation of volcano, how tidal wave occurs, what are the features of fold mountain and so forth. This can make learning more interesting thus students tend to like that particular subject. Internet also serves the most updated dictionary and theasaurus around. It is far better than the available dictionary books. This is because in the online dictionaries, there are recorded voices about how to pronounce particular words. There are also more examples about how to use that particular words. This would help students from doing either minor or major grammar mistakes. In the internet also provide online encyclopedias which is also up-to-date. By using online encyclopedias, learning will be fun and interesting. Students will also be exposed to various computing skills adding to their monotous study without computer or laptop. The learning environment in a classroom will be lively as class presentations will be done by multimedia presentation. By doing presentations regularly, student can develops confident in them in doing public speaking. This important to them as our country needs active youth and excellent in academic performances. Hence in my opinion, each classroom in every secondary school should be provided with computers or laptops in order to enchance students learning processes. So hopefully the government is aware of this issue in order to produce brighter people in the future for the good of our country.

Examples of Technology-Enhanced Learning Environments

Ashley Holmes
The Montana Heritage Project (found at Edutopia.org): This article is a perfect example of how technology-enhanced learning environments are teaching students multitudes of information simply through their own interests. Students in the town of Libby, Montana researched the logging business that had become an intricate part of their towns history over the past century and the effect its disappearance had. Through Internet research and hands-on experience, students were able to compile information and create PowerPoint Presentations, brochures, and even a website devoted to the past and future of Libby, Montana. Students were able to take an authentic problem and create a stronger sense of community for those they shared their information with through the application of technology. Union City Public Schools Reform (found at Edutopia.org): In the article, A Remarkable Transformation, school officials in Union City, New Jersey explain how they managed to save 11 schools from state-run control and with the help of a strong administration and technology, test scores, passing rates and college-bound percentages have skyrocketed. By introducing new ways to find information (like through internet access) and new ways to express information (such as computer programs) students have discovered new ways to express their interests in certain subjects and how they can present information to their peers. Because of this nontraditional format, Union City Schools are prime examples of how technology-enhanced learning environments can better any community. Taking It To The Street (found at the Apple Learning Interchange): This article delves into how one school took a local authentic problem into their own hands and attempted to solve the issue at hand through the use of technology as an aide, guide and research device. In order to investigate the speed of passing cars outside of their school, students used their own knowledge of physics and safety to develop graphs, rules and plans of action to the their problem. They were able to research similar problems in other areas through the Internet and create professional-looking presentations to display their results. Working with technology (and not just watching it work for them) students were able to solve a significant problem by building a technology-enhanced learning environment.
