Stephen R. Covey and many other experts and philosophers realize this and have been calling for it in their models and frameworks for change. In his framework he argues an inside-out approach to being effective and that such approach is centred on principles and character. Such approach can and may well be for many people a challenging way as it forces them to think-outside-the-box and away from their comfort-zone; it challenges them to step into a paradigm shift. A persons character is a collection of his/her habits, and habits have a powerful role in his/her life. A habit can be defined as something you do without thinking about it. While effectiveness is defined as habitually doing things that help you get great results over and over again. When breaking down what a habit really is, one realizes that it consists of knowledge, skill, and desire. Knowledge allows you to know what to do; skill gives you the ability to know how to do it; and desire is the motivation to do it. Coveys framework is a process and doesnt happen overnight! Patience and practice are key to adopting these habits and mastering them. And like any process, there are stages that the Seven Habits move us through in the following order:
Desire Knowledge Skill

Habit

Dependence

Independence

Interdependence

Covey characterizes these stages as: 1. Dependence: the paradigm under which you were born, relying upon others to take care of you. 2. Independence: the paradigm under which you can make your own decisions and take care of yourself. 3. Interdependence: the paradigm under which you cooperate with others to achieve something that cannot be achieved independently. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Inside-Out: The Change Starts from Within

In his framework, Covey explains that the first three habits focus on self-mastery; achieving the private victories required to move from dependence to independence. These habits are: Habit 1: Be Proactive Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind Habit 3: Put First Things First

Success is a Shared Journey

Moving from independence to interdependence, you must practice habits 4, 5, and 6 that state: Habit 4: Think Win/Win Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood Habit 6: Synergize

Time Out!
Success comes with a price, but such price doesnt mean that one burns themselves! This is where the 7th habit plays a vital role of taking time for yourself and sharpening your self. Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Balance and moderation are key to such improvements and only then will you be an effective person.
