TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING II
AIMS & OBJECTIVES : UNIT I CHAPTER I The objective of this chapter is to compare railway and highway transportation and development of railway system with particular reference to India. In addition to this the chapter aims in classification of railway system. CHAPTER II Deals in permanent way of the track, the capacity of railway track, the gauges available for the railway track. The different type of cross section of one railway being delt in this chapter. CHAPTER- III This chapter aim is requirements, function & type of railway section for railway.It also compares different types of rails section available, the length of rail that to be maintained. A part from this rail bailers and wear of rails in discussed. CHAPTED IV This chapter deals in requirement of an t joint for the railway tack, types of rail joints to be used and how welding of rails in done on the railway. CHAPTER V In this chapter the sleeper functionality, it requirement are being delt. The classification of sleeper such as timber, metal & concrete are discussed. Above this comparison of different sleepers are made in this chapter. CHAPTER VI The function and requirements of fishplates. Various section involved in fishplateare being delt. Also how a fishplate is discussed.

CHAPTER VII The chapter deals with the type of ballast that can be adopted on a railway track. When do we renewal the ballast & time required for renewal. The function & requirement of ballast is delt in this chapter. UNIT II CHAPTER VIII It aims in aligning of horizontal curves how to provide proper super elevation, cannot deficiency strength of transition curves, gradients and grade compensation is being delt in this chapter. CHAPTER IX This chapter deals in necessity of points and crossing. It also aims in explaining about a left hand turnout right hand turn out and crossing in railways. CHAPTER X The objective of this chapter is to how to select site for railway station, therequirements required in selecting the site. It also deals with station yards function & importance of level crossing. CHAPTER XI The aim is to know the object & engineering principles of signaling. How thesignals are classified the necessity of signals. In addition to this it aims in methods of inter locking & their function. UNIT III AIRPORT PLANNING AND DESIGN CHAPTER XII Deals in development of air transportation system with particular reference in India. The components in Aeroplane and the characteristics of aircraft is being delt. CHAPTER XIII Objective of this chapter is how a site is selected for airport. The meaning of apron. Hanger is delt typical airport layouts, marking, lighting, drainage system is delt. Typical airport layouts, marking, lighting, drainage system is delt.

CHAPTER XIV: It aims in classification of obstructions, zoning laws, airport lightening and drainage system of airport. CHAPTER XV: This chapter deals in runway orientation, basic runway length and how corrections are made for elevation. Temperature and gradient is being delt. Apart from the above the geometric design of run way is also covered. CHAPTER XVI: It aims in design methods of flexible and rigid pavements for airport runways and also LCN system of pavement design for runways is delt. UNIT IV CHAPTER XVII: The objective of this chapter is to know different types of water transportation and their advantages in water transportation. CHAPTER XVIII: This chapter deals in general layout and design consideration of port. It explains about pier, wharf structures, transit sheds and apron.
