One of the quintessenha; movies of the 80's, Bnck to the Future is a movie that many of us spent a great deal of our youthful years watching and quoting. It s timelessly entertaining, but still a hard-core time capsule oi everything 80's. For much of the first half of the filnr, Fright Night plays as a comedy-one part your typical 8O's-style John Hughes film, one part spoof of countless vampire flicks (including the Hammer film classics from the 60's), Therl by the time we get midway tluough the second act, it switches gears-becoming more of a standard vampire flick or monster movie,.,bui agairy not in the traditional sense. In the second half, the film blends plot elements frorn films like John Landis' An American Werervolf in London with

homage (no longer a spoof by this point) to the Hammer films-only moving the story from the dark and mrsty moors of eastern Europe and transplantrng it to suburban middle America. All of this results in a film that has a biting sense of humo1, some excellent atmosphere, and an obvious knowledge and love of the old Hammer Studios' films. A Scream-esque post-modern breakdown of the genrg WAY before Screar4 and a wild gear shift
of a vampire movie WAY before From Dusk Til Dawn.

barely), suggesting the reign of terror of yuppie killer Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) with splashes of blood and personal souvenirs. Bale is razor sharp as the blank corporate drone, a preening tiger in designer suits whose speaking voice is part salesman, part self-help guru, and completely artificial. Carrying himself with the poised conlidence of a male model, he spends his days in a numbing world oi status-symbol one-upmanship and soul-sapping small talk, but breaks out at night with smirking explosions of homicide, accomplished with the fastidious care of a hopeless obsessive. The film's approach to this mayhem is simultaneously shocking and discreef even Bateman's outrageous naked charge with a chainsaw is most notabie for the impossibly polished and gleaming instrument o{ death. Harron's film is a hilarious, cheerfully insidious hall of mirrors all pointed inward, slowly cracking as the portrait becomes increasrngly grotesque and insane. Before the film, be stumed by music from the new corporate raider: ol rocl - lhe Yuppie Priiks. Hand*ome, talented and rich beyond your wildest dreams, they don't need you - you need them. Jusi hope they don't back over you with their BMW's after stealing your girlfriend, loser.
