Tickets are now offcially on sale for
the Strathmore Fall Centennial Gala,
which will take place on Oct. 15 at the
Strathmore Civic Centre. There is room
for up to 352 guests to attend.
We are using a web site, http://strath-
more.simpletix.com which allows peo-
ple to actually choose their table and
seat for the gala, said Councillor Bob
Sobol and Centennial committee mem-
ber.
In addition, as this is a sit-down plat-
ed dinner service, guests are asked to
choose their entre, beef, fsh or veg-
etarian, and the full menus are on the
site.
Tickets to the gala, which is open to
everyone, went on sale Aug. 15. No ad-
vance tickets were sold, and those inter-
ested in attending have until Oct. 5 to
pick theirs up.
This is a party for Strathmore, and
we are hoping many residents of Strath-
more will attend, said Sobol.
It may seem its a little early to have
tickets on sale for an event in October,
but the Centennial Gala Committee felt
this is an appropriate time.
Special guests have been invited to
attend the gala, though so far only the
Honourable Donald S. Ethell, retired col-
onel, and Lieutenant Governor General
of Alberta has confrmed attendance.
Entertainment will include a pianist
during the cocktail hour, and the South-
ern Stardust Big Band, and 18-piece
band and vocalist, will be there to pro-
vide plenty of dancing music.
The Centennial Gala Committee,
comprised mostly of citizens of Strath-
more, continue to work hard at ensur-
ing this will be a very memorable and
enjoyable evening for all who plan on
attending, said Sobol.
Tickets can only be purchased online
or at the Town Offces, and are selling at
$75 per person. Tickets to the Gala in-
clude a complimentary program, a com-
plimentary professional photo, compli-
mentary wine (two bottles per table)
and birthday cake served at 11 p.m.

The Rosebud Lions Association held its Ray Zachariassen

the Grand Opening of the Rosebud fre hall, which made
for fun-flled day - despite the late afternoon rainstorm on
Aug. 15.
Chairman of the Board (of the Fire Department) and Dep-

unteer frefghters for the offcial ribbon cutting ceremony.
He said that (their) ground-breaking happened in July of

VALUE DRUG MART KICKS OFF
EIGHTH ANNUAL KITZ 4 KIDZ CAMPAIGN
Program Provides School Supplies to Children Who Need Them Most
Value Drug Mart is set to kick off the eighth annual Kitz 4 Kidz campaign. The Kitz 4 Kidz
program is a community initiative designed to collect and provide school supplies for
children in our region who are unable to begin the school year with the basic necessities.
This four week program begins August 2011 and all donated school supplies collected at
the local Value Drug Mart will stay in our community.
Over the past six years, Value Drug Mart has been providing school supplies for children
who need them most. The Kitz 4 Kidz program was introduced to raise awareness and
provide school supplies for less fortunate children, while ensuring donations stay in our
communities. The program has been a success. Cash donations, individual supplies and
over 25,000 kits have been sold totaling over $130,000 in donations made to local
communities across Alberta and British Columbia.
Donations can be made at your local Value Drug Mart. Individual school supplies and
cash donations are also welcome. You may also choose to donate from two different
kitz available in-stores. Each kit includes an assortment of pre-selected items and
costs only $5.
If parents are unable to provide their children with the required school supplies, they
should inform their childs teacher or principal of the school. Teachers can then contact
their respective School Board for the requested items. Supplies are given discreetly to
ensure privacy.

Zachariassen stood tall as he proudly pointed out the fact
that 90 per cent of the project was volunteer hours and
hard work from the members of the department and local
men and women who devoted time and talents to the facil-
ity.
Chief Art Hudson, Deputy Chief Zachariassen and Second
Deputy Chief Paul Lassen (who designed the facility), cut
the fre tape ribbon while the Rosebud fremen stood in
front of their new facility. Standing with the 21 volunteer
local crew were members of the fre departments from Bar-
ons, Drumheller, Rockyford, Dalum, Standard and Calgary.
The afternoons golf tournament had nine groups of four
registered for the nine-hole event, and approximately 120
diners present at a roast beef supper at the new fre hall.
The tournament had nine hole sponsors for the event
which included the following businesses in and around the
community: Encana, Badlands Construction, Highway Ser-
vice from Drumheller, DR Oilfeld Services from Rosebud,
D-Alta Mechanical from Rockyford, Hi-Standard Spray from
Rosebud, Laycock Pressure Trucks from Rosebud, Gates
Agencies from Standard, Wheatland Blasting and Strath-
more Building Supplies.
Profts from the tournament go to Rosebud Community
Projects including the frehall.
During the supper, people were entertained by local Rose-
bud area band Cat Country Cougar Hunters who played a
wide range of music. Members of the band included Aaron
Krabsen (lead guitar/singer), Garrison Krabsen (bass), Tory
Tanner (steel), and Al Pearsen (drums).
The evening ended with the pulling of the silent auction
items and continued music from the band.
The Rosebud Fire Department unveiled its newest facility Aug. 15, during a day of celebration, which including their annual golf tournament. many of the
volunteer frefghters were on hand for the opening.

People who attended Saturdays powwow at Siksika Na-
tion may not have realized they were witnesses to a his-
torical moment. Before the competition began Chief Fred
Rabbit Carrier, of Siksika Nation, and Chief Duane Antoine
from Poundmaker signed a Memorandum of Understanding,
MOU.
We have a strong history amongst ourselves in business,
sports, education, cultural and theres honour and respect
between the nations, said Bryan Tootoosis, from Pound-
maker.
Its really important for the future of our grandkids, and
the kids that are unborn to recognize, and to know that
Chief Poundmaker was adopted by Chief Croowfoot. Thats
a big history for us back in Saskatchewan, said Antoine.
Poundmaker (Pitikwahanapiwiyin) was adopted by Crow-
foot (Isapo-Muxika) in 1873, following a Plains Indian cus-
tom to replace one of his own sons killed in battle. Pound-
maker was a political leader and had signed treaty six.
The MOU is to build capacity as far as exchanging knowl-
edge, years ago in First Nations there was free trade long
before Europeans began it said Rabbit Carrier.
This was to kind of renew that, kind of a free trade be-

tween Siksika and Poundmaker. What makes it unique is
that Poundmaker is an adopted tribe within Siksika. Chief
Crowfoot adopted Chief Poundmaker, since then the rela-
tionship has always been the same, so we just wanted to also
renew that information, said Rabbit Carrier.
It (the MOU) was signed last year but it was not signed
by our chief so I requested for proper protocol, the chiefs
have to sign. The only time that we were able to do that was
during our powwow.

The Town recently began operating the newly constructed wastewater treatment plant.
The new plant a state of the art facility, with a higher capacity that will accommodate
growth in the town for years to come, and has signifcantly improved the quality of the
waste water discharged to the Bow River. The Town was obligated to meet a higher
environmental standard, imposed by the Alberta government. As a result of the new
plant, bio solids are extracted from the system and require disposal.
The disposal of the bio solids has become a challenging and a costly effort; currently in
the $6,000.00 per week range. The Town is currently looking at alternatives to reduce the
cost of the disposal. Additionally, the budget for the 2011 sewer program is $4,875,000.00,
which covers the cost of operating the plant.

The Town constructed a waterline from Calgary to supply high quality water to the
community, which was completed in 2010. A substantial portion of this project was funded
through a provincial grant, however, the Town was responsible to fund approximately 13%
of the total cost of the $53,000,000 project. In addition, the cost of the water was in-
creased by the supplier, (the City of Calgary), at the beginning of the 2011 year. The Town
is required to repair and replace obsolete and aging water distribution infrastructure, and
additionally, to provide new infrastructure to accommodate the growth of the town.

One of the most dreadful things a
family can imagine created a commu-
nal gathering of the Crowfoot commu-
nity, Aug 10.
Coming together at a white school
house, a fundraiser was in effect, with
the collective incentive to raise money
to help aid Heather and Andrew Limb
and family, who recently lost their
home to a fre on July 19.
The family was fortunate enough
that no members of the household
were in the home at the time of the
fre; parents Andrew and Heather were
in Moose jaw, eldest daughter Court-
ney was away working in Regina. The
youngest, David, was at Bible camp,
and Stephanie was out riding horses.
The Limbs were clearly not left alone
in dealing with the tragic aftermath of
a lost home, thanks to the Crowfoot
communitys efforts in trying to help
restore what was lost, as well as help-
ing the family move forward.
The fundraiser included a silent auc-
tion, as well as a live auction, events
which were largely organized by Alison
and John Sanden (who was the nights
auctioneer). The many auctioned items
were donated from contributors com-
ing from Strathmore and area.
Food and beverages were provided,
as well, musical talent was showcased
from certain members of the Crow-
foot community, including a bagpipe
player and also a duo playing their vio-
lins. The social aspect and nights pro-
gram was largely put together by Barb
Breaker.
Following the many pleasantries,
many stories were shared from those
close to the family, all describing how
the fre had impacted their lives. The
general emotion was a sense of grati-
tude. Little attention was paid to what
was lost, but rather, the gifts that were
saved were the dominate focus.
Community member Norma LaFont,
who has opened her home to the Limb
family, which she also shares with her
husband Jeff and son Levi, expressed
that in doing so, it has been a gift in
itself.
I believe that whatever you pray
for or focus for in life gets delivered
to you, said LaFont. I always believed
that the best comes out of the worst sit-
uations, and for us, the best has been
that weve gotten to know them bet-
ter, and have been able to be there for
them with a positive attitude.
The Limbs are very thankful that a
great portion of their house had sur-
vived the fames, and were extremely
amazed by the amount that was saved,
including precious mementos that with
held strong sentimental value.
It was a very old, train station house
from the 1930s, and being that old and
made of wood, we thought it would
just go up in a shot, and it actually
worked the opposite. The wood was so
dense that it didnt really go off, said
Heather Limb.
Consequential to the fre, the largest
theme that the Limbs saw emerge was
a sense of community.
I remember dad seeing smoke on
the horizon and jumping in the half
ton with pails and buckets and going
to fght fres and thats just what we do.
Andrew didnt really see a lot of that
because he didnt grow up here and
hes very strongly impacted by that,
said Heather.
As for what is to be expected in the
future, the Limbs hope to start from
scratch instead of rebuilding parts of
the house that were damaged in the
fre.
Were defnitely staying in the com-
munity, its been really stressful but in-
credible, said Heather Limb.

If youre overwhelmed with everything you need to do to
get ready before heading for college, here are a few tips to
help ease the stresses on both you and your parents. Have
everything you need purchased, packed and ready to go.
Knowing what to bring is just as important as, knowing what not
to bring. Know exactly whats in your dorm room and dont forget
these essentials
Quarters for laundry - try to keep a roll or two on hand so you
dont run out when you need them.
Laundry basket, hamper or bag - given that space is at a
premium for college students, this should double as a way to
carry your clothes from your room to the laundry room.
Shower caddy - youll most likely need to carry your shower
items (soap, shampoo, conditioner, razor etc.) from your room
and back.
Shower shoes or fip-fops - make sure you have something to
prevent catching or stepping in something nasty.
Robe - youll need something to wear back and forth to the
showers. Not everyone is comfortable in just a towel, (or some
arent comfortable seeing YOU in a towel)!
First aid kit - something simple like a small case with band
aids, gauze and tape will help those with small injuries.
Sewing kit - you might just need a button sewn back on
to that favorite shirt or some minor
mending might be required.
Small toolkit - a basic tool kit with
a small hammer, screwdriver (with
different tips), wrench, tape measure
and a few other small essentials will
come in handy.
Hangers - you dont want to arrive at
school with tons of clothes and nothing
to hang them on.
Cup, bowl, plate, fork, knife & spoon
- these come in handy when you order
that late night pizza or other snacks
during your stay.
Can opener - this one doesnt really
need explaining!
Clean up - Cleaning wipes and paper
towels are a good idea to keep on hand
for clean up and those inevitable spills.
Keychain/lanyard - most students
have a keychain that holds their keys
and student ID, so get a sturdy one that
will be hard to lose.
Extension cord/power bar - dorm
rooms are notorious for not having
enough plugs.
Small fan - most residences dont
have a/c, and those tiny rooms can heat
up, so a small fan will do wonders in
your room.
Extra long sheets - check with your
school before buying or packing sheets,
some dorm rooms have extra long twin
beds which standard sheets wont ft.
Umbrella - if youre packing during a
sunny day, this might slip your mind, but
youll be grateful for it the frst time it
rains on campus.

Parliamentary Report
Our Conservative Election Campaign Platform
promised that as the government, our Party would
remain focused on Canadas economy and work
to create jobs and economic growth while keep-
ing taxes low and delivering support for Canadians
through core federal programs and services. As a
new majority government, we convened Parliament
soon after the election to pass Budget 2011 and
follow through on our efforts to protect Canada
during the global recession and secure our nations
fragile recovery.
The talk around our riding over the past two
weeks expresses concern over the economic diff-
culties facing Canadas largest trading partner, the
United States. While the U.S. Congress did succeed
in securing a deal to hold off its creditors, the U.S.
credit rating suffered its frst-ever downgrade.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper maintains that,
Canada is in good fnancial shape. Our govern-
ment is making progress on our defcit reduction
agenda. Some nations only wish they could be in
our position. European nations are struggling try-
ing to manage massive public debt. Asian invest-
ment markets become included in those that suffer
as various parts of the global economy experience
crisis. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says, Canada is
well-positioned to face global headwinds.
Prime Minister Harper is taking a leadership role
to continue our governments success over the past
few years, opening new markets for Canadian frms
in order to create new jobs for Canadian workers.
Our Prime Minister has gone to Brazil because it is
currently the seventh largest economy in the world.
It is poised to grow to the ffth largest. Our strategy
over the week-long mission will improve Canadas
relations in Central and South America. At a time
when our largest customer, the U.S., isnt shopping
so much, Canada should be in the business of of-
fering others access to our goods and services. At
home in Alberta, we are prepared to meet the chal-
lenges of supplying new customers in new markets.
We have never shied away from competition when
we see opportunities to expand our trade and mar-
ket our goods.
Canadas wealth has always relied on our exports.
A weak global economy hurts a nation like ours. We
have to work at fnding ways to improve our po-
sition. Our Conservative government is doing that
work.
As nations in the global economy experience
economic turmoil within their own borders, by
comparison, Canadas national economy remains
stable, credible, and an attractive place to invest. It
is clear that our Conservative government is doing
the work necessary to prevent the serious fnancial
and economic problems other nations are facing.
As they turn to Canada to strike trade deals and
improve their own lot trying to emerge from the
global recession, Canadian workers and their fami-
lies prosper.

On August 9, two Communities in Bloom Provincial
Judges toured our community and assessed it accord-
ing to a grid of values. The judges seemed to be posi-
tively impressed with our community. I would like to
express my appreciation to the Town of Strathmore,
especially to Doug Clark, Parks and his crew for the
great job of preparing the parks and gardens.
I also wish to express my thanks to Mayor Steve
Grajczyk, CAO Dwight Stanford and Town staff for
their support of our initiatives. Many citizens took
time to make their properties attractive. I especially
wish to thank the merchants and business owners and
managers who responded to our request to tidy up
their properties. Your premises were noticeably more
attractive.
We will fnd out how well we placed in the judging
at the Provincial Communities in Bloom Awards to be
held in Forresburg in September. Thank you everyone.

Rural family enterprises are the largest and most
signifcant group of business owners in Alberta. Al-
most 70 per cent of family-owned businesses fail
before the second generation, due to lack of re-
sources in helping families transfer assets, owner-
ship and leadership to the next generation. Thanks
to the success of the Alberta Business Family Insti-
tutes (ABFI) Creating Pathways for Entrepreneurial
Families, rural Alberta families now have access to
programming focusing on succession planning and
knowledge transfer, allowing rural Albertans equal
access to quality and relevant business education
opportunities.
This program, based out of the U of A School of
Businesss ABFI, helps families transition assets to
sons, daughters and other young people by equip-
ping them with the tools to successfully transfer
family businesses from one generation to the next.
Not only that, but Creating Pathways is increasing
the number of highly skilled and trained people
to lead business initiatives in rural communities,
diversifying employment opportunities in rural Al-
berta and encouraging young people to remain in
and return to rural communities.
The Rural Alberta Development Fund contrib-
uted $1.5 million to the Creating Pathways project,
which has not only delivered on its goals, but far
exceeded them. With RADF funding support, Cre-
ating Pathways is successfully delivering meaning-
ful and practical programs to participants all over
rural Alberta. By saving family businesses, Creating
Pathways is also saving small towns - helping build
sustainable, vibrant and competitive communities
for generations to come.
To date, this project has been astoundingly suc-
cessful. Over 2,700 people and 160 advisors/fa-
cilitators have participated in workshops, events
and group training, 25 partnerships supporting
rural development have been formed and dozens
of families have taken part in one-on-one family
consultations.
Creating Pathways has created two cornerstone
programs to support the longevity of the program
and consistently meet family business needs. Pass-
ing the Torch is aimed at business owners and
Creating pathways for entrepreneurial families
trusted advisors to strengthen their understanding and begin
the process of succession planning. The Trusted Advisor fo-
cuses on providing professionals with in-depth understanding
of unique issues facing family business owners and the family
circle.
As you may know, the RADF was created and funded with
$100 million by the Government of Alberta in 2007, with a
mandate to support innovative projects throughout the prov-
ince that would contribute to strong, vibrant and sustainable
communities. ABFIs Creating Pathways for Entrepreneurial
Families is a shining example of what RADF stands for: build-
ing leaders of tomorrow and strengthening the communities
we live in. Each of us should be proud of the determination
and passion fowing from communities throughout our prov-
ince, as it is these traits that shape the future success of our
province.

the market place out of that type setting. Its a prod-
uct that can be produced anywhere around Calgary
and is also a product that can beneft anyone in and
around Calgary, said Baum.
It is a local product and a product that obviously
people in Strathmore would enjoy and would fnd
to be benefcial to their lifestyle. Its also to show
that theres really neat, new and innovative prod-
ucts coming out of rural settings, like Strathmore,
(and) like Balzac. said Baum
We started the business because we knew that
we could produce beef that was healthier and tast-
ed better. We just didnt know exactly how to go
about that, said Lamb.
Lamb had read the book Steak, by Mark Schatz-
ker, which was about his search around the globe
for the best steak, which he found in slow grown,
grass fed beef. The two women decided to emulate
that process. Lamb is a third generation rancher
and her familys business already had the capabil-
ity and production means to be able to facilitate a
project like this.
There is grass fed beef, obviously and then
theres commodity beef, but she thought of the idea
of, is there a way to produce a better tasting grass
fed product? said Baum.
The women explained that most beef bought in
stores is commodity beef and will at some point
be sent to a feedlot. Lamb said all beef bought in
grocery stores would be fnished at a feedlot and
fed grain.
Its the grain that changes the fat profle in the
beef, and changes the composition to more satu-
rated fats, unhealthy fats, said Lamb
Commodity beef is higher in saturated fat, which
is why a lot of people avoid red meat. When cattle
are kept on grass their whole life the fatty acid pro-
fle is more favourable.
Our beef is higher in fats that are good for you
like omega 3s, omega 6s, vitamin E, and lower in
fats linked to disease like heart attacks, and any
other saturated-fat-related illness, said Baum.
The grass the cattle are fed is also monitored for
quality and composition. Lamb said it needs to be
high in alfalfa and the cattle only eat the top 40 per
cent before heading to a new section to graze. The
top 40 per cent is the sweetest grass, and Lamb said
it is the highest in energy.
Their cattle are all a minimum of nine months
to 12 months older than other grass feed beef, and
at least nine months older than commodity beef,
which is what makes it a part of their slow-grown
process, and what sets them apart from other grass
fed producers and commodity producers.
Where people will notice a difference in our
grass fed beef versus other grass-fed beef is, were
working to produce a tastier product by the way
weve changed our production. So there should be
more natural marbling and tenderness in our prod-
uct than compared to other grass fed beef, said
Baum.
Tall Grass Beef Company in the U.S. have proven
the method, and the women have hired Dr. Allen
Williams, Chief Operating Offcer for Tall Grass
Beef, as their consultant.
Lamb said with rising grain prices it makes sense
economically, not just health wise. The prices will
be comparable with other beef, and the end prod-
uct will be competitive with what can be bought
at stores.
Come October their product will be carried at
Community Natural Foods in Calgary, and also di-
rectly to the consumer through their website which
will allow the consumer to get to know the local
producers and familiarize themselves with the pro-
cess. The women are also taking pre-orders at this
time. To fnd out more, or to place an order, go to

Break and enter
Sometime around noon on August 9, a residence in
Langdon, was broken into and items were stolen from
the residence.
Other Langdon residents reported seeing a small
dark blue Volkswagen car at the residence with two
Caucasian males described to be tall and skinny with
short, dark brown buzz cut hair believed to be in their
early 20s.
Strathmore RCMP are seeking assistance from the
public in locating the individuals responsible.
If you have any information regarding this incident,
please contact the Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3968
or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Boating incident update
On Sunday August 7, at approximately 11 a.m.,
a private dive contractor from the Edmonton area at-
tended Chestermere Lake and with the assistance of
the Chestermere RCMP boat patrol began the recovery
operations. This included utilizing a sonar system in the
area of the last sighting of the missing man. They were
unsuccessful in locating the missing presumed drown
male.
On Tuesday August 9, 2011, RCMP members from
the E Division (British Columbia) Underwater Recov-
ery Team attended Chestermere Lake to continue the
recovery operations. This team, at around 3 p.m. on Au-
gust 11, was successful in locating a deceased male.
After completely searching the originally defned area
where witnesses claim the missing person was to have
gone down into the water, the search area was expand-
ed a few hundred yards north. The use of sonar was key
in locating the decreased man.
The deceased male recovered from Chestermere
Lake is confrmed to be Bondo Katumbay, a 33-year-old
citizen of the Democratic Republic of Congo residing in
Calgary. He was reported missing and presumed to have
drown on the evening of August 6, in Chestermere Lake.
Chestermere Victims Services have been actively as-
sisting the friends/family during this lengthy process.
The residents of Chestermere have been very support-
ive during this investigation showing their respect, com-
passion and generosity. This tragic incident hopefully
will serve as a reminder of the importance of using all
personal safety equipment while participating in water
sports.
Mischief in downtown core
On August 14, at approximately 2:40 a.m., Strath-
more RCMP were dispatched to a residence on Park
Lane Drive. The residence had suffered damage to a
decorative address sign in the front yard. Later that
morning at approximately 3:05 a.m., Strathmore RCMP
were dispatched to Centre Street and Park Wood Cres-
cent, where a stop sign was removed from the intersec-
tion and mail boxes tipped over. The stop sign for south
bound traffc on Centre Street and Park Lane Drive was
also removed. Strathmore RCMP are looking for the
assistance of anyone who may have seen something
suspicious in the area.
Lost rafters Located near carseLand
On August 13, at approximately 6:50 p.m., Strath-
more RCMP received a 911 dispatch regarding two
adult females who had been rafting on the Bow River
and had become lost. The two rafters reported they had
been on the river for approximately 6.5 hours after they
launched from a location near Mackenzie Town off of
Highway 22X, but had lost their bearings and did not
know where they were. The Calgary Police Service re-
ceived the initial 911 call, but lost phone connection
with the rafters.
When the lost rafters made a second 911 call, they
were connected with Wheatland 911 Call Centre and the
Strathmore RCMP were dispatched. Upon the request of
the Strathmore RCMP, the Strathmore Fire Department
assisted in the search efforts and launched their River
Rescue Craft. At approximately 9 p.m., members of the
Strathmore Fire Department Rescue Team located both
female rafters on the bank of the Bow River near McKin-
non Flats.
Both females who were from Calgary were located in
good health and transported to a location to be picked
up by family members.
The RCMP wish to remind all potential rafters and
boaters who plan such activities to always be aware of
their location, have a planned route, and destination or
exit point from the body of water they are on.
rcMp assist
On August 15, at approximately 10:22 p.m., Calgary
Police Service requested assistance from Chestermere
RCMP. A shooting had taken place in Calgary and the
suspect was being followed by the Calgary Police Ser-
vice HAWCS helicopter. The suspect attended a resi-
dence in Chestermere, where offcers from Calgary Po-
lice Service, RCMP Chestermere, and RCMP Strathmore
staged outside. The suspect was taken into custody
without incident. The suspect was turned over to Cal-
gary Police Service offcers to continue their investiga-
tion.

One day a year, every year, Dairy
Queen restaurants donate the pro-
ceeds from Blizzard sales to Childrens
Miracle Network Hospitals in their lo-
cal area. Last year over $270,000 was
donated to the Alberta Childrens Hos-
pital, with the Strathmore location
raising over $6,000 for the cause. This
year they have blown that number
away, raising $10,300.
I think its just a combination of ev-
erybodys excitement this year (that)
just seemed to push it, said DQ man-
ager Rhonda Powell.
The money came from a number of
different things the store had going
to help raise funds. There was wind-
shield washing, face painting, build a
bears, coin canisters, balloon sales and
of course Blizzard sales.
The day will also leave another
memory with the staff - they flled
their biggest order ever for Agrium
Inc. Carseland Nitrogen Operations.
One of the ladies husbands works
there, and he wanted to take one for
(himself) and his little group of peo-
ple wanted to get Blizzards, and it just
went from there. So they all put in
an order and there was 334 Blizzards
from them, said Powell.
She said their faithful supporters
such as Home Hardware and Co-op
also took part in the Miracle Treat Day,
and other businesses also pre-ordered
30 or more Blizzards but, the order
from Agrium Inc. was defnitely the
biggest order they have ever had.
Even though it was raining, it didnt
dampen the spirits of the staff, and
some of them still went out and tried
to scrub windshields in the rain.
Road construction in front of the lo-
cation was also scheduled for that af-
ternoon, and after speaking to some-
one on the construction crew, the
crew came frst thing in the morning
and moved out of the way so the drive
thru could remain open.
Mayor Steve Grajczyk and Chief Ad-
ministrative Offcer Dwight Stanford
were among the frst volunteers help-
ing make blizzards, which also includ-
ed local frefghters, EMTs, RCMP and
numerous others.
Though this was the most the Strath-
more location has raised on Miracle
Treat Day, Powell said it has defnitely
set a precedent for next year.
Every year we defnitely try to al-
ways improve our goal and try to
outdo ourselves from the year before,
said Powell.
Miracle Treat Day a success

Losing land and property damage
due to fooding is an issue many resi-
dents of Nightingale have been facing.
Residents Mike and Barb Froese came
to the Aug. 16 Wheatland County coun-
cil meeting to ask for assistance. Their
home has been fooded since April, and
they are concerned when winter hits
their pipes and plumbing could freeze,
creating even more problems. The big
question was why the developer didnt
have to raise the level of the property
to try to prevent this from happening.
Finding an out from the slough, which
is keeping the water surrounding the
property, is a major concern for the
couple. The county will be sending the
concern to their insurance company
for direction on how they will be able
to help. A resident in the county has
offered to deliver fll to the couples
home, which should help them create
the three foot berm they are hoping
will help address the issues.
During the public hearing portion
of the council meeting many residents
from Nightingale spoke on behalf of a
new development that may come to the
area. While none said they object the
potential development, they are con-
cerned about things being built right so
that new residents to the hamlet do not
face the same problem. As a part of the
area structure plan, the issue of proper
drainage and access to the newly devel-
oped homes will be implemented as a
condition.
County viCtim of fuel theft
Over the long weekend the county
was a victim of fuel theft. The perpe-
trators got away with $7,703.89 worth
of diesel fuel. There had been no sign
of anyone being at the location when
workers returned on the Tuesday, but
the missing diesel was soon noticed.
Fuel theft has become a problem all
over and different suggestions were
made to try to prevent it from happen-
ing in the future. One of the sugges-
tions by Councillor Alice Booth was to
add dye to the fuel, traces of which will
remain in a vehicles tank for up to two
years, giving the RCMP a way to try to
track the theft. Another suggestion was
bringing the trucks back to the yard for
the long weekend. The public works
department will be looking into the
suggestions and trying to fnd a solu-
tion.
County to Cost share
roof repairs
Golden Hills School Division, GHSD,
has asked Wheatland County to cost-
share the repairs to their roof. The
amount of the repairs is approximately
$8,700 and GHSD is asking the county
to pay $3,000 for an extended warranty
on the repairs. Council has accepted
the request and will be looking at in-
creasing the monthly lease contract
when it comes up by $50 a month, so
that the money spent will eventually be
replaced.
sidewalk work to begin soon
The contract for sidewalk work for
Rosebud and Gleichen has been signed
by Brooks Asphalt and Aggregate and
is set to begin the second week of Sep-
tember.

Water meter mishap
Continued from page 17
Wheatland County was recently informed that a wa-
ter meter in the Gleichen Arena had been bypassed.
A contractor had disconnected the meter in the zam-
boni room after it had frozen in 2008. No record of
who authorized disconnecting the meter has been
found. The mistake was caught by one of Wheatland
Countys summer students. The student realized the
meter was disconnected as they were replacing them
with new meters. Because of the mistake the county
lost approximately $630 in revenue. A motion was
passed by council to write a letter to the Gleichen Ag-
ricultural Society stating the mistake, and informing
them they will now be billed for new readings from
the new meter that was installed on July 21.

Strathmore Girl Guides
If you are looking a group
of girls to make friends with,
I know the best one. You
can join Girl Guides. We like
to help out in the commu-
nity, go camping, work on
badges and sell cookies. We
also make crafts. I have had
four years of experience
with this group and have
made many new friends
and have learned many new
things. Anyone can join
as long as youre a girl.
Community Service is just
one of the good deeds we
do. Sometimes the group
will go and sing at the se-
niors home or we will clean
up the park. Whatever it is
we will help.
Crafts are a great experi-
ence for all ages. For gen-
erations you
can share
what you
made with
others. But
if you mess
up thats ok.
Then you can
just imagine
what it could
be.
Since I
have been a
member of Girl Guides of
Canada, I have gone camp-
ing at the Calgary Zoo and
The Royal Tyrell Museum
in Drumheller. I have also
been to many theme camps
in and around Strathmore.
Cookie selling is to help
our fundrais-
ing so we can
go camping
and have
parties. In
the fall we
sell mint
cookies and
in spring
c ho c o l a t e
and vanilla
s a n d w i c h
cookies.
I love guiding because
of all of the fun things like
community service, camp-
ing, crafts and cookie sell-
ing.
We are also looking for
dedicated volunteers to help
run the groups in Strath-
more. My mom volunteered
when I signed up and she
has just as much fun as I do.
You can sign up at R.E.V.S.
for the following (age de-
pendant): Tuesday night
Sparks, Monday or Tuesday
night Brownies, Wednesday
night Girl Guides or Mon-
day night Pathfnders.
If you want more infor-
mation you can call our Dis-
trict Commissioner, Yvonne

I look forward to meeting
you!

Girls in and around town will have a chance to
strut their stuff when the Dreamboat Dolls Natu-
ral Pageant comes to Strathmore on Aug. 28.
Liz McKinnon, owner and director of WestCoast
all Canadian Girls pageant, will be bringing the
pageant to town.
My daughter has been doing pageants in the
States since she was young and there wasnt any
up here in B.C, or in Canada really, that I knew of.
So we just decided on a whim to start it and see
if it would fy, and the response has been com-
pletely overwhelming, said McKinnon.
The pageant will be kept semi-natural, so the
competitors will be able to wear a little make-up
and dress up, but nothing extreme. She said in
a natural pageant there is no make up and the
dresses can be very plain, and she knows that the
girls have fun dressing up so she wanted to keep
that incorporated in a small way.
There is no talent portion, but the girls can do
kind of runway modeling and cute turns and pos-
es into it if they want. There also is no age limit,
and McKinnon said the oldest girl signed up so far
is 20-years-old.
In each community McKinnon and the Dream-
boat Dolls pageant visits, she is requesting the
participants bring an item to donate to the local
food bank.
I just think its important for the girls to give
back to the community as well because being in
a pageant is a privilege and I dont want them to
take it for advantage, said McKinnon.
It does cost the moms $100 to put them in and
I want them to also give back to the community
because theres probably a lot of little girls out
there who would love to do it, but its just not in
the budget for their family. I just want them to ap-
preciate what theyre doing.
Registration for the pageant, which will take
place at the Civic Centre, ends on Aug. 21. McKin-
non said she has to know who will be compet-
ing no later than then because she has to get the
prizes ready.
Every single girl goes home with a crown, ev-
ery single girl goes home with prizes. Some will
get a sash, but they all go home with a title they
have been crowned with, said McKinnon.

One of the largest ice cream sundaes ever made weighed
54,914 lbs. I would think a visit to the dentist would be
needed after consuming some of this sundae!
At 1:40 a.m. on March 22 a fre raged through a
home at the corner of Briarwood Road and Briar-
wood Crescent in Strathmore. Four neighbouring
homes were evacuated for the safety of the oc-
cupants due to the severity of the fre and wind
direction. The occupants of the residence where
the fre started were not home at the time. A sec-
ond residence next to the frst, was damaged by
the fre.

August 12 kicked off the three day Alberta Zone
Championships in Red Deer. Strathmore Reds AAA
midget head coach Zane Anderson was the assis-
tant coach for the Zone 2 team, which had local
bantam ball player Logan Crooks on it. The team
won the championship, bringing home the gold.
We were not the number one seed going in so, it
was sort of an upset which was nice. We were the
underdogs, said Anderson.
We beat (the) Calgary Zone in the semi-fnal. We
werent expected to win that, but we played really
good, had good pitching. Then in the fnal we were
down by three runs going into the last inning, and
we scored four to win it, so it was pretty exciting.
It was good, the boys played well. It was the
frst time since 2005 when a lot of the old Strath-
more Reds played on that team and won it, so it
was a pretty big deal for them, said Jim Crooks,
who was there as a parent observer.
Crooks coaches the Reds AA bantam team, and
was there to watch his son Logan play in the Cham-
pionships. Logan played all over the place during
the championships, pitching a few innings, playing
frst base, even manning right feld.
Logan played pretty good. I think he played
with the Strathmore bantam team all year so it was
sort of a jump up in competition but he handled it
pretty well I thought, said Anderson.
Logan enjoyed it thoroughly. When he got home
he realized he has to work on his hitting. There is a
good chance hes probably going to go to Arizona
in December to a baseball camp down there for
fve days, said Crooks.
Crooks said it was a good tournament, and that
Logan met some new friends, and played some
good ball players.
We had a pretty good group of kids, there was
no complaining about playing time, and everybody
was a good teammate. (A) good team atmosphere
for the Zone championship team, said Anderson.
He said he thinks they are going to try to keep
the same coaching staff for next years Albertas
summer games, which Logan had been a part of
last summer and hopes to return to next year.
One thing Anderson would like to see different
for next year would be more practices, but said
it can be tough for a team like the Zone 2 team.
By the time all the teams are done with provincial
championships the zones, or summer games are
pretty much the next weekend.
The season isnt quite over yet for some ball
players. The selection process is just beginning for
Team Alberta prospects that will compete in the
Prospect Series versus Manitoba and Saskatche-
wan, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan Sept. 1 to 5.
The top 20 players from the Zone Championships
will be picked to be on the team. Anderson said he
is one of the assistant coaches for the Team Alber-
ta, and will also be a part of the selection process.
Zone 2 players head
home champions
Training for this years football season began on Aug. 15. All levels of
players have been preparing on Strathmore High Schools feld, trying
to get into shape before hitting the gridiron for their frst games of the
season.

The Strathmore Magic Junior B Womens Fast-
pitch team took home the title of Provincial Fastball
Champion in late July, and now has one more title
to put under their belt - Western Canadian Fastpitch
Champion.
We lost two games. We lost our second game
against Victoria, and against Saskatchewan 2 we
lost, but we ended up being in second place, said
coach Jim Songhurst of their round robin standing.
Being in second place gave them the chance to
go for gold, and the determined team did just that.
Songhurst said in junior B and senior B the top two
teams advance to the Westerns, which took place
from Aug. 4 to 7. This was not the frst time the ju-
nior B team has made it to Westerns, though it was
the frst time theyve won a gold medal.
Weve been to the Western Canadians now since
2004, but this is the frst gold medal weve won.
Weve won bronze and silvers a few other times,
but this is the frst time weve brought home the big
one, said Songhurst.
Obviously they just played super ball. There was
never a time that they were out of any game. We
had a couple of extra inning games that were really
tough, there were some very good teams there, said
coach Ron Walmsley.
Twice the team won an extra inning game by just
one run. Magic played the gold medal game against
Prince Albert, a team they had lost to before.
Our girls were really on a high. They were there
to win and there was no fooling around, they didnt
want to go out. All they wanted to do was play ball
for four days, said Walmsley.
Next year the team will move up to play senior B,
and go into an even tougher category. Walmsley said
there would still be the same coaching staff. With
the girls moving into the senior B division there
leaves a gap to be flled by a new junior B team.
We arent going to have one, were hoping there
will be one but we wont be coaching it, said
Walmsley.
Weve sort of recruited a couple of people, one of
them is an ex-player of mine, and were hoping that
they will put a junior B team together and play out
of Strathmore as well. But that of course isnt fnal-
ized yet, and it will probably be a while before it is.
Magic brings home gold
Football season is just
around the corner
The Strathmore Magic Jr. B girls fastpitch team have once again
proved themselves as champions, this time bringing home gold
from the Western Canadian Fastpitch tournament held in Burnaby,
B.C. earlier this month.

DUNLOP, Joan
November 2, 1943 -
August 16, 2011
Peacefully, with her loving husband
of 47 years, Sonny, holding her
hand, Joan passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital
in Calgary at the age of 67 years after a courageous battle
with Leukemia. Besides her husband, Joan (Mom) is
survived by her son Darin (Belinda) and their 3 children
Rebecca, Kirsten and Connor of Strathmore, A.B.; her
daughter Dawn (Mark) and their 3 sons Tom, Jack and
Mitchell of Salmon Arm, B.C.; her mother, Paula (Nanny);
and two brothers, Carl and Wayne. Mom was predeceased
by her father, Ozzie Fisher. Mom was born on a farm east
of Winnipeg in Hazelridge, M.B. and this is where she met
her husband and partner for life Sonny (Dad). Their early
years together were spent going to ball tournaments to
watch Dad play. Mom graduated from teachers college
in 1963 and married Dad in 1964. She taught school
(grade 1) until 1967 when she took 10 years off to raise
us (Darin & Dawn). In 1973 Mom & Dad bought the farm in
Lockport, M.B. where they farmed grain and cattle for the
next 24 years. In 1977 Mom resumed teaching grade 1 at
St. Andrews School. At the same time she went back to
University part-time and earned her Bachelor of Education
from the University of Winnipeg. Teaching was a passion
for Mom and there were many nights we listened to
Mom tell her grade 1 stories at the dinner table for
what seemed like hours. Mom and Dad sold the farm in
1997 and built their dream house near the Red River
in Lockport, M.B. In 2000 Mom retired after 26 years of
teaching. The next few years were spent living the retired
life going on trips (cruises) and camping and skiing with
their group of friends the butter-brickle gang. Mom was
the consummate Mom and spent a lot of her time in the
kitchen, whether it was getting lunches ready for us in
the feld, making Sunday supper including raisin pie for
her Dad, or just baking. Although she spent a lot of her
time in the kitchen she always found time to attend all of
our hockey, fgure skating, and baseball events, usually
with a lot of our friends in tow. In 2006 Mom and Dad
moved out to Strathmore, A.B. Mom quickly developed
a very close and special group of friends in Strathmore.
Mom spent the last 5 years with us and our families doing
what she, and we, loved; whether it was reading to the
grand-kids, watching them in sports, or baking with them
to fll Grandmas Cookie Jar. These last 5 years were
precious to Mom, Dad and us, and specifcally the last
4 months of Moms life were very special as it provided
Mom, Dad, us, and the grandkids the time to express
feelings and thoughts that needed to be expressed. Mom
will be dearly missed and not a day will go by that we wont
remember her strength, special qualities, gentleness and
the love we had for Joan, Cootie, Mom, and Grandma.
Our family would like to thank the Hematology staff at
the Peter Lougheed Hospital, in particular Dr. Lategan, for
their wonderful care. A Celebration of Moms life will be
held Saturday, August 20, 2011 at Lord of All Lutheran
Church (112 Lakeside Boulevard, Strathmore) at 11:00
a.m. Donations in Joans memory may be made directly
to On Eagles Wings Ecumenical Ministries Inc. (10072
164th Street Edmonton, Alberta, T5P 4Y3). To send
condolences, please visit www.wheatlandfuneralhome.
