Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus Application Guidelines and Fee Structure Academic Year 2011/12

Staff and existing students are looking forward to welcoming you to Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus. To ensure that your application can be processed as quickly as possible, please read the guidelines below, as well as the notes on the Application Form. Staff within the Admissions Office will be happy to assist you in anyway. Please refer to our website at www.hw.ac.uk/dubai for further details.

GUIDANCE NOTES ON COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM


1. All applicants must complete Section A and Section D and ensure that the application is clear and legible. - If you are applying for an undergraduate degree (e.g. BEng/BSc/BA/BBA) you must also complete Section B. - If you are applying for a postgraduate degree (MSc/PG Dip) you must also complete Section C. - All applicants must complete the Photograph Form and submit along with the Application Form. You must provide official documentary proof of previous degrees, diplomas and/or other qualifications obtained. These documents must either be originals (which will be returned to you in due course) or verified copies. You must complete the Application Form (this can be downloaded from our website) and send it to the Admissions Office, HeriotWatt University Dubai Campus either directly or through an authorised agent, by regular post, courier, email or delivered in person. Please ensure that you have enclosed all the required documents (see checklist given) along with the Application Form. Incomplete applications may cause unnecessarily delays to your application process. Full details of all requirements are set out in the form itself. You will be asked to pay a non-refundable administration charge of AED 300 to cover the cost of processing your application. Applications sent without this will not be processed. You must fill separate Application Forms, and pay separate application fees, for each individual programme you wish to apply. All students must pay a refundable security deposit of AED 1000 at the time of accepting the offer. You will need to meet any bank charges incurred for any fees paid through credit card, bank/telegraphic transfer etc. in addition to the fee itself. You must also send a copy of the funds Telegraphic Transfer Issuing Advice, along with the Application Form, to help identify your payment. Please check with your bank when transferring the funds for details.

10. A decision on your application will be communicated to you as soon as possible. If you are accepted, an offer of a place of study will be made and you will be invited to accept this offer. 11. In some cases an offer may be conditional. Where this is the case you will be informed of any additional requirements before an unconditional offer can be made. In this case please liaise closely with the Admissions staff to ensure that all conditions can be lifted as quickly as possible. 12. Students, who are made an offer of a place, need to pay the first installment (non-refundable) of their fees (equivalent to 10% of the first year fee) at the time of accepting the offer in order to secure a place on the course. 13. In case a cheque is dishonoured, you will be liable to pay a fine of AED 500 in addition to any penalty charges your bank may levy. For details of charges on other services such as cheque replacement, cheque withholding etc. please contact the Finance Office. 14. Private medical insurance (optional) is available for students at an additional cost. For details please contact the Admissions Office.

REFERENCES
Undergraduate students must provide two academic references. Postgraduate students should also provide two academic references. However if this is not possible, you may provide two work-related references as an alternative. All references must:

be presented on appropriate Institution headed paper with official stamp of the Institution clearly visible. state the name of the Company/Institution to which the referee is affiliated as well as their position and relationship to the applicant refer to the academic ability of the applicant and their general character and suitability for the programme

Alternatively, students may use the official Reference Form available from the Admissions Office or from our website at www.hw.ac.uk/dubai How to write a Reference? The person writing the reference should know you personally however references from family, other relatives or friends are not accepted. If you are currently attending School or College, or have recently left, you should ask your Head Teacher, Principal or an appropriate teacher or tutor to write the reference. Guidance for Referees We would appreciate if you could use your official headed paper for producing the reference. Please give an assessment of the suitability of the applicant for the higher education programme they have applied for and where possible, include the following points: o o o o o o o Existing achievements, with particular reference to subjects relating to the programme for which they have applied Academic potential, including predicted results or performance Motivation and commitment towards the chosen programme Any relevant skills achievement, whether certified or not Powers of analysis and independent thought Any additional factors which may have affected, or will affect in the future, their performance Information about any special needs and other requirements

All tuition fees mentioned above are per year, except MBA fee which is per module. Undergraduate fees is guaranteed for the duration of the study All students applying to any undergraduate programmes (except BSc Construction Project Management and BSc Quantity Surveying) will receive a scholarship of AED 3,000 per annum.

INSTALLMENT PLAN (for all courses except MBA)


o Students resident in the UAE and not requiring our University sponsored visa can pay the annual tuition fee in 10 equal installments 1st installment: nd th 2 to 10 installment: o on acceptance of the offer post dated cheques, dated 5th of every month from September 2011 to May 2012

International students and students requiring our University sponsored visa can pay the annual tuition fee in 4 equal installments

Two year, part-time, MSc students must pay the total tuition fee in 20 equal installments. Students, whether UAE residents or international students, full-time or part-time, who pay their annual fees in full before the commencement of the programme can avail a discount of 5% on the net annual tuition fee.

OTHER FEES STUDENT TRANSPORT


o o o Transport is available for both semesters per year, subject to a minimum number of students and only if found feasible. Transport fees are payable for the entire year in two instalments. The first instalment should be paid 30 days before the start of the programme and the second instalment should be paid as a post-dated cheque, dated 10 December 2011 Regrettably transport fees are non-refundable therefore no refund will be given for early withdrawal for any reason. Students requesting transport therefore commit to pay both installments.

All of these payments must be received atleast 30 days before the commencement of the programme. Providing transport and accommodation facilities is at the discretion of Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus management, and these services will be made available only if found feasible. STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
o o o o o o o o Furnished accommodation is provided on a twin-sharing or single room basis. There are separate apartments for male and female students. Student accommodation is subject to availability and is provided on a first-come first-served basis. Rooms are allotted as per availability. Specific student requests may not be possible. Student accommodation is provided only for the appropriate contract dates within the Academic Year. Students who wish to stay for an additional period, (before or after the Academic Year), will be required to pay additional fees (subject to availability of rooms). For specific dates, please contact Admissions Office. Fees include furnished accommodation, housekeeping services and transport services at set timings to and from the University. Fees do not include meal services, internet access or other expenses of a personal nature. Accommodation fees are payable for the entire academic year in two instalments. The security deposit is refundable at the end of the programme after deduction towards damages/loss of items, if any, caused by the student. STUDENT VISA
The University provides a Student Residence Visa service for our students. Visa Processing and Renewal Application processing and renewal takes approximately 20 25 working days. An express service is available, which will take approximately 10-15 working days at an additional cost of AED 1500. It is the students responsibility to submit all documents for visa renewal at least 30 working days before the date of expiry of his/her visa.

An express service is available, which will take approximately 7-10 working days at an additional cost of AED 1000. Student in UAE Student in UAE Student out of UAE for less than six months Student out of UAE for less than six months Student out of UAE for less than six months Student out of UAE for more than six months Applying for Student Visa Visa applications will be confirmed only when we receive the completed Application for Student Visa form, payment of the visa fees, and payment of the relevant tuition fees. All of these payments must be received at least 30 days before commencement of the programme. Staff based at Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus will process your visa application and inform you. You must inform the University of your arrival details using the Flight Details form, at least 10 days before your flight. A copy of the visa will be sent to you and the original visa will be deposited at your airport of arrival. For further details please see the Application for Student Visa Form or contact the Admissions Office. Visa fees are subject to change and outwith the control of the University. In the event of an increase by the government authorities, the student will be liable to pay the additional visa charge(s). Any fines incurred as a result of a delay, loss of document etc will be paid by the student. The University will not be liable for such fines. The student visa sponsorship/cancellation fees are non-refundable. Students whose applications are rejected by Immigration will have their Visa Deposit and Visa cancellation charge refunded less the official processing charges already levied. The refundable deposit for student visa sponsorship is refundable less any official charged levied. Students will be responsible for all costs relating to processing a new visa if they wish to continue at Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus.
